well, except for all of the Ridge Racer games on the PS1 (except the first), namely Rage Racer (best tracks in the whole series, period) and R4

the N64 is a pretty nice system for racing games though, and RR64 is a fine game

>> No.2401419

N64 games had great control, if you had big hands and played from the outside with full motion for your thumb on the analog stick. If you played from the middle you're in for a bad time.

It would have worked the same way the camera works with the C-unit buttons.
The technology just wasn't there yet to make free-moving camera during the 5th gen. Much less in 1996 which was still pretty early into the gen.
Is there any PS1 game with free camera? Not even MGS2 or MGS3: Snake Eater on the PS2 had free camera, we had to wait until MGS3: Subsistence for that.

>> No.2401438

>>2401430
That's because dual-analog controllers didn't exist until halfway through the PS1's lifetime. The technology was there, devs just didn't take advantage of it.

>> No.2401439

>>2401415
RR64 had more content and better gameplay than both of those games though. I love R4 (Rage Racer blows ass), but it had 8 courses and a ton of cars that handles similarly. No arcade mode, so all you could do was time trials a few challenges and then the grand prix mode.
RR64 has fewer cars, but what? 30-something courses? The ability to pick and choose what car on what course and at what time. Its just infinitely more replayable than R4. And harder too.

And don't get all up in muh grill cause I'm siding with a Nintendo game either. I's still play any PSX game over even the best N64 games, I just happen to really like this ONE game, lol.

>> No.2401445

>>2401438

Then again, the technology was also there when MGS2 and Snake Eater came out, but those didn't have free-camera. It was something that started in the mid of 6th gen.

When you think about it, the C-unit buttons on the N64 controller are basically a secondary d-pad, with 8 different directional inputs (horizontal, vertical and diagonals), so they could have also made a free camera with the C-units, no need for another analogue (although analogue works better for camera)

Plenty of PlayStation games had dual stick support, but with the Analog Joystick. So the technology was definitely there and could be implemented, it just wasn't until later that devs thought of doing it with dual-stick controllers like DualShock.

>> No.2401754

>>2401458

I don't mean dual stick support, I mean actual free-movement camera. You know, like in MGS3: Subsistence, or most games starting from the 7th gen.
Back in the 5th gen, free camera wasn't a thing, or at least I don't remember it in most games. There's probably a couple, probably on PC, but can't remember any on PS, N64 or Saturn.

>> No.2401768

>>2401754
The point was that the technology was available, just that devs didn't think to use it. Obviously there wouldn't be any on the N64 and Saturn because they didn't have dual analog sticks as standard, same with the PlayStation for half its run. But that doesn't mean the technology wasn't there to support it.

For starters it suffers from the horrific camera that plagues that era of games.
Secondly good luck controlling anywhere that you need to walk a fine line with a worn stick.

It didn't really age well, I recently played through it again and the camera was the most difficult enemy.

>> No.2401791

At least it had a stick at launch, unlike the Saturn and PlayStation. Nintendo's only flaw was not releasing an updated version like Sega and Sony did, which is the only reason anyone gives those two a pass.

>as long as you're not trying to use the D-pad and stick at the same time

why not? games like Sin and Punishment or Bangai-O control flawlessly with the left-hand position, using the d-pad, stick, Z button and L button.

>Not as good as DualShock but not terrible.

DualShock is my least favorite controller of the 5th gen, personally.
Don't like the sticks, don't like that fucking d-pad, don't even like the select and start buttons on it.
Model 2 Saturn is the best, then N64, then dual shock.

>> No.2401823

>>2401804
Aside from the analog controller being a bulky piece of shit, my complaint with the Saturn controllers and pre-analog PlayStation controller is the lack of proper 3D support. The generation as a whole was supposedly a huge leap forward as the start of proper 3D graphics and gameplay, yet the initial controllers were still stuck in the past. Ergonomically it's good, but the Saturn controllers are basically just 6-button Genesis controllers.

And for the N64 controller, I found it hard to use the stick effectively with my hand on the left prong or the D-pad with my hand in the middle, at least as a kid. I loved the DualShock so much because every button and stick was in reach without having to move the hands or strain my thumbs.

>> No.2401826

>>2401823

I find using the analogues on the DS kind of awkward even to this day, and the PS1 and PS2 sticks were clunky as hell, they got better with the DS3 at least.

I never had any problem using the Saturn's excellent d-pad to play 3D games, although there's also the Nights controller, I just use the regular model 2 pad, never had any problem with games like Panzer Dragoon, Burning Rangers, etc.
