This is going to sound pathetic and lonely. Maybe I am. Some of my best times as a kid were spent on retro consoles playing the old two player games with a bro there, drinking, etc... Now that I've hit 30 how do i find people who are still into retro games like me to play them with. I'm not about to take an ad out on craigslist and I don't really know of any local meetups. Where can I find a retro vidya bro to drink with and power through old games on the weekend. My setup and knowledge of emulation will play everything up to N64 and PS1. I just want a bro to cruise thru double dragon 2 or mario kart or whatever with. My wife hates this shit but doesn't mind me taking a day or 2 a week to do it.

I don't mind modern games and have a more than adequate separate setup for them. They all have such a niche fanbase. Just isn't the same playing shit online when you could have actual living people over. So many modern gamers don't wanna leave home and play in person.

I'm 30 too, married andI have a daughter
really don't have much time to play anymore...sucks
I remember the good old days, before getting married, used to live with my brother, and we played D&D Shadow over Mystara on the weekends, and mostly beat 'em ups. We used to buy chips, soda and marijuana.
Best weekends ever. Do not let the dream die, keep looking

Last post of me just bitching to myself.

It's like all my social activities are spent doing shit other people want to. I go hunting with the brother in law twice a month. I hate that shit. I'll spend 15 minutes on targets and be bored... Anytime we actually go to hunt and its my turn to shoot I miss just because I don't want the hassle of either cleaning or hauling it to be cleaned. Not really a moral issue. I just prefer my food from the super market. Worst thing to do after a day of vidya is clean up the snacks and beer cans. I even volunteer building houses with H4H once a month. Just can't seem to find people with the same interests. So don't think I'm anti social or anything. All of my socializing seems to be spent doing shit other people want to do.

Not really looking to meet another gamer online. I just wish there was like a moose lodge for retro vidya gamers lol. Damn I feel old. (also a member of the local moose lodge, poker and pool get old fast.)
I've honestly thought about opening a coffee shop or bar with arcade cabinets, couches, and retro consoles. It just doesn't seem like a sound business plan. I don't know of any ones that lasted a year. Plus navigating the DRM legalities of console gaming feels like it would make it next to impossible. You don't, unfortunately.

As a kid I usually ONLY played games if they were multiplayer. As an adult I've had to learn to enjoy single player games. But even though I've found some great ones, it's just not the same most of the time so I don't play games as much as I used to anymore. I'd guess you're in the same boat.

Yeah, old school gaming was a much bigger thing in the early years of emulation. Now we're over a decade and a half past when emulation started and there's just not many people into anymore. And the old hardware is difficult to find in working order and some games don't even work on modern style TVs. Our hobby is RAPIDLY becoming obsolete and creeping toward extinction.

I'm not usually so much of a downer. I've got a good social life. Great wife. Great family. It's just all my social time is spent doing shit other people are interested in. Realistically I just need to cultivate some new hobbies other people are equally interested in. Honestly my wife doesn't mind my gaming habits so long as I still get the important shit done. As long as I don't veg out on it more than 2 nights a week she's cool. We have a couple date nights a week but we enjoy the freedom to pursue our other interests. Honestly our space is the best thing for our relationship. We take turns cooking after work when we don't eat out. There's none of that jealousy nonsense. We're both very family centered. I've got a good life. I may have made it sound way too depressing. I'm having a bout of nostalgia/brew I guess. I wouldn't actually leave this city for vidya lol. Our roots are too strong. :)

Yeah, it gets less and less acceptable by most people in general. Not that I have any time for it anyways.

Anyways, I think once you hit 30 it's hard to make new friends in general, beyond your coworkers or others in volunteer activities, sports, that sort of thing. People start coupling up and maybe even have kids, it becomes difficult just to get people to commit to dinner and drinks. The best I've been able to do is get people to come over for Catan or another board game once in a while, or occasionally go to a barcade.

We have retro game meetings several times a year or every two months.

there are also bigger meetings where about 60-70 people gather for a 5-days next gen, retro and bbq fest!

pic related.

my setup at JagFest 2014 in Germany.

Well, I'm the opposite. I live in a place with barcades, a retro shop that has regular events, there's some bar that has a weekly thing with retro consoles, there's even a yearly convention. Thing is I am walking autism so I would rather stay home and jack off with one hand and play SMT with the other.

>> No.2393484

I think the current trend of simple, old-style indie games will do a lot for retro stuff. Clearly the emulation dev. era has given way to people using powerful PCs to make their own shit, by combining influences as they like.

People who prefer simple 2D games will probably seek older stuff, especially SNES/PS1 stuff which seems to age particularly well.

Besides, I still haven't played a better Tactics game than FFT, a better ARPG than Diablo 2, or a better platformer than Yoshi's Island (Except for maybe 3D World, but that's apples and oranges, SP and Multi).

Steam does remasters of stuff like Baldur's Gate because there's really no substitute. It's not like people can play anything like Megaman X these days, and most good JRPGs are old (Xenoblade is fantastic though). People who really love games will go searching, just like I did. And I was born in the mid 90's.

I really feel you OP. I'm 21, but I've always played the games that were out when i was very young. Even moreso now because of modified consoles and fast internet.

I play newer games with friends sometimes but only because it is fun to chat while playing. Multiplayer Quake1/2 is my main game, and has been for years. But i'm lucky if i find somebody my age who knows what it is, let alone wants to play it. Whenever i hear somebody 25> talking about games i always ask them if they were into Quake.

Thankfully people still play online. Every player there has been at it for years, so even people that are considered noobs on a server could destroy an actual new player. This makes it hard to get anyone into Quake, it takes more practice and patience than what people are used to. I STILL see some players that i was fragging at 10 years old. Good games never truely die.

If anyone is intrested go to tastyspleen.net. Q2 is pretty damn active. DM servers hit 16 players at least once a day. Usually is around 6-14. Duel, CTF and jump are popular as well.

The problem would be finding a place to store everything, preferably with internet. Getting a bunch of mediocre-decent CRT's and a bunch of old LAN capable computers wouldn't be too hard to do. Could require members to either donate some equiptment or pay a small fee.

An office basement with utilities would be perfect. Like just a huge carpeted area with a bathroom and a fridge for BYOB.

I'd say people who emulate all their systems have a desire to play on real hardware. It is just tough to hunt all of it down and find space to put it. Then you also need to buy the games and hunt down all kinds of shit.

I used to emulate a fair bit. At the time my computer couldn't handle PS1 emu and i was too poor to buy games. So i got into disk swapping (which is surprisingly easy and doesn't fuck up the console). Then I later inherited a WII, found a very very nice deal on a CRT TV and bought s-video/composite cables. Emulation on the WII is very awesome. It looks identical to the original system if you get the colors and PAR adjusted correctly. The only noticeable difference is the controller and sometimes timing.

You can pretty much own any pre-2000 game if you have a computer, ps1 and wii. Excluding dreamcast and N64.

Depends on the location and the execution. My favorite bar is has many arcades, all free to play, and goes for a big 80s-90s vibe all around. Showing the movies, playing the music, that kind of stuff. They're good on keeping things in great shape and fix machines quickly.

A lodge is an interesting idea. I don't know anything about lodges though, aside from their depiction in old TV shows.

It's common for a man and a woman to love each other even if they don't "get" a lot of stuff about each other. A lot of relationships come with certain constraints in regards to other parts of your life, and you may have to sacrifice certain things or parts of yourself to satisfy your partner and be someone they can love/respect.

Which is all part of why it doesn't bother me that I'm single.

i don't really get why people who care deeply about a hobby don't find a partner who shares or at least accepts that passion.

i'm 30 this year and i've never dated any women who don't like games. even the few non-gamers have been down for co-op games. one of the women i'm seeing right now is into older RTS games, one of my lady friends is super into fighting games. another is into text-based games, MUDs etc, ffs. i can't even get into that shit.

i don't think it's necessary to find a partner who's into everything you are or anything, but if you care about something that much, it's not like women don't play video games.

By the time you feel ready to enter a marriage type commitment, you've probably done your share of partying, socializing, and living the single life. You enter your late 20s and early 30s thinking about longer term plans like where you'd like to put roots down, if you've got the career you desire, if you need to make other major changes, and the kind of person you want to share your life with. A good marriage should be much more than a bf/gf, it becomes about the two of you working together towards common hopes and dreams, both small and large. It's not that you can't play vidya because wifey says no, it's more likely you're going to be working on some project in your house/yard/garage, or maybe taking care of a kid, or other grownup shit. Even if you're not married, life has a way of getting in the way.
