Although I'm sure it's best to play Shadowgate with a mouse or maybe touchscreen there will always be a special place for the NES version in my heart as the first game that truly terrified me. Even though I owned and constantly did battle with Ghosts n Goblins, which is also horror themed and dick hard Shadowgate much more thoroughly scared me. I dunno if it was the first person perspective or the atmosphere or what but I was so afraid to make mistakes and have to reload that I was always running low on torches and just... ugh.. the dread.

now, the red star on the ceiling is clearly a hole. that's what Del sees when he examines it more closely. The door with the moon symbol is next to it. In short you need a key.

anybody else just hate Lakmir for his role in these games? I mean I can see his function in the games but all that motherfucker does is meandering and grieving about how shit went terribly wrong so he uses the PC as a leverage to get things right this time around.

>> No.2395553

>>2395443
hey, that map you're looking for is somewhere in the waters when you go back to the sewers right beneath the jailcell you're starting out. so I think you could go back and still pick it up technically. it's supposed to be in the first room on the right (if there was water, I don't remember).

but just as a reminder, you technically don't need the map anyway. I finished the game without and it was easily bearable. not much of areas to memorize anyway. the village isn't big and the 4 towers are all rather linear so not hard to remember..

>> No.2395614

>>2395353
they are very much alike. the only differences seem to be in-game models and colors that look slightly different (Hell-hound, Werewolf, etc.). Lakmir wears a blood red robe in the GBC version and in the colored macventure game it's a blue robe but same model. the two bridges look a bit different too.

gameplay-wise there are no differences afaik.

if you want new and varied content, you should definitely get the new Shadowgate on Steam or GoG. they changed a lot compared to the original and made the scope of the game even bigger that way. for example, the ice orb you get isn't just an orb anymore you can use for freezing up the lake. now it's an orb that sucks in different elementals that live in Castle Shadowgate and you can use release their powers depending on different situations. I liked that since it has a bit of a creature-collecting game flair like Pokemon or SMT.

not really. the problem with SG Classic is that it's a very faithful remake of any older SG version and I would have liked it if they added at least a few more difficulties to choose from. But that would mean new content and new puzzles.

At least SG 2014 delivers on all of that.

>> No.2395978

>>2395749
it depends. a lot of achievements are tied to all the deaths you can collect by failing so that doesn't really happen as often.

another reason is that a lot of players don't really play past the novice mode and since a lot of achievements are only unlockable in other difficulty modes, they never get to see any of them. then there is a turn limit on top of that so you can unlock certain achievements.

but yeah, a lot of achievements are about unlocking regular deaths and hidden ones. I haven't really bothered getting these as well although everybody should, you get interesting cutscenes for that.

SPOILER AHEAD:
like giving the king his ring back is a bad idea now since he's an undead who haunts you then.

OP here. thanks for the bump.

I don't know what else to discuss though, I guess I post some more artwork or screenshots.

Maybe this: http://www.unseen64.net/2008/04/04/shadowgate-rising-n64-cancelled/

SG Rising on N64 was almost done but they cancelled it because the gamecube was coming out. Would have enjoyed to see what that game is like. there is something enticing about unreleased retro games. like it was the same with Baldur's Gate 3 - The Black Hound albeit not retro. But I'm still kinda glad they never did SG Rising considering how bad Kemco's animations and textures in SG 64 were.

So I'd love to see them release SG Rising after Beyond Shadowgate but I think they might actually consider an Uninvited and Deja Vu remake before that. Most of those KS retro revivals seem like a pretty good deal so far.
so it makes me wonder why didn't anybody on /v/ talk about Zojoi's Kickstarter campaigns 2 years ago? That Sherlock Holmes kickstarter failed and /v/ never talked about it. Even when the SG remake was announced nobody on /v/ cared.

this is part of the reason why one can only make a decent thread about SG or other pure adventure games on /vr/.

So like, I'm unclear about this game. Is this a remake of the TG16 shadowgate, or some new game that's inspired from it? Is SG64 not in this cannon, but is borrowing elements from it? Because SG64 is 100 years after shadowgate, yet that teaser seems to indicate it's maybe 50 years afterward yet there's Del Conttonwood, with a whole new Theif occupation, as the protagonist.

>> No.2405757

>>2405732
I'm not sure either. It's too early discussing this anyway but my line of thought is similar. It's probably a whole new game that was inspired by SG64 and Beyond SG (the sidescroller retro game) alike because as the teaser says, it takes place in the closed off capital city and not Castle Shadowgate. so the question is if SG64 will remain canon or not. They might retcon it completely like that.

But this is really great either way because we finally get to see some other parts of the map in Kal Torlin and more lore-related stuff about that universe and Zojoi get to do what they always wanted to do.

Del's entry in the Shadowgate 64 manual: "You'll assume the role of the Halfling Del Cottonwood as you explore Castle Shadowgate. A free spirit off to seek his fortune, Del found himself waylaid and thrown into the dungeon beneath the castle."

Literally no mention of him being a thief there. And I just played the game too and there was no reference to him being a thief in-game either. And think about it, he was traveling with a trade caravan, the last group that would want a thief amongst them anyway.

>> No.2407671

>>2406853
oh I totally realize what you're getting at and that seems true but I was speaking more about the narrative scope of the N64 game and that doesn't only include what his occupation is but also what surrounds him. Shadowgate is a ruin occupied and ransacked by bandits and thieves. that's right. also, in D&D the prefered class for halflings is usually a rogue. But I totally know that N64 Del isn't really a thief. Free-Spirit sounds neat but doesn't seem like a class or job, right? It's just that for example in games like FF VI Locke also calls himself an adventurer and treasurehunter as well although he's actually a thief and nothing less.

I'm just saying that this particular focus on thieves going by scenery clearly fits the bigger picture if you take the other games into account.

besides, with Beyond SG 2016 they want him to be a thief anyway so that makes me assume they always had this planned out when thinking about this character.

>Anyway can someone tell me about Shadowgate 64 and how it compares to the original?

yes. the difference is that the original is a pure point and click adventure and SG 64 is a first person adventure game where you don't have a cursor. At its core, it works the same. In SG64 the story takes place about a 100 years after the original took place. All the rooms Jair visited seem to be gone and Shadowgate is a ruin now but the four towers are still around and a little really creepy and desolate village where almost everybody left.

Gameplay-wise, a big difference is that you obviously have a full 3D experience. There are more NPCs to talk to, living and dead ones. you can take more items along but some will never any purpose. Another cool thing is that SG64 has a lot of books that explain background lore and some notes and books give you hints how to progress as well. it's similar to finding a book in Morrowind and then you read it. Also, you fight a few enemies in the original but not in SG64 since Del isn't a warrior. However, Del can trick a few people and otherwise normally progresses through being knowledgable about something or by showing some NPCs certain items.

a down-side of this game are the really muddy textures and the shitty animations but all the content is still pretty cool. In short there is much more real time interaction compared to the original which works in taking turns.

also, the remake not only has torches running out quickly in the master mode but you also get banshee cursed once you open that coffin in the tomb room.

after 250 turns or something, the curse will kill you and after that you still have to worry about the torches running out, unless of course you go visit the djinn and answer 4 of his riddles correctly.

just get it on steam.
besides, that will give Zojoi a share instead of buying a used GBC copy.
