Back in those days, we just played games. I had a Genesis and my best friend had a SNES. We never bickered about which one was better because we were too busy PLAYING GAMES.

It was a good move because a lot of NES games had to resort to using the select button as a third button and the Genesis comes along and just takes the select button and moves it over to the others, forming A/B/C. Start button being near the other 3 was a nice touch.

If they could make decently responsive triggers for a game then I'd be a trigger man. Most games just use them as long press buttons. I've actually modded some triggers into buttons. Why should I have a useless 3/4 inch of pull when I can just press a button and have the same effect.
