Previous thread - >>2371721

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

These past few threads have been great, keep it up!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright!
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Hello,
I have a Sony kd-36fs130. No matter what console I hook up (composite and component), there is visible discoloration on the right side of the image.

I can hide it through the use of sizing options via the service menu, but I lose a bit of the screen.

Any other fixes/suggestions? I'm not sure what is causing the issue.

the Sony FW900 can probably only do 240p @120hz

you'll need to use black frame insertion to avoid frame doubling ( looks like motion blur on on LCD)

for anything that you can't use black frame insertion on, you'll need to use a scanline shader or SLG, ( the best SLG ever made is built into the XRGB3 as it produces true black scanlines).

try to find a link for you so you can set your video card up appropriately... hold on ( if I don't come back I probably fell asleep)

240p at 120Hz with black frame insertion
or
480p at 60Hz with every other line blacked out

Both will look close to the same, though 240p 120Hz will look brighter without black frame insertion at the expense of motion quality.

It's recommended to use a superwide horizonal resolution modeline for emulation, and set the emulator to scale to fit that to avoid issues with varying horizontal resolutions in games.

Recently got a small Panasonic TV and noticed it had some issues.
You can barely see even the first layer in the picture but basically there are between 2 and 4 copies of the picture on the screen inside of the screen fully visible. They also seem to scale as one would expect inside of the CRT.

A few things like RetroArch and MAME have BFI. It shouldn't add any latency if the black frame is shown second, though that increases the needed CPU requirements to maintain fullspeed since it has half the time to push a frame. Otherwise, it will make the latency like it is at 60Hz.

That's if the game is running at a perfect 60 fps. And still it would probably have some lag.

Not enough to effect gameplay but you're not going to use a gun with it.

I don't know of any examples off the top of my head but not all retro games will run that great if you double the fps.

>> No.2393513

>>2393501
The swap interval is doubled when using BFI so the game runs as if it were 60Hz. Anything using Vsync is going to have slight latency, but that can be mostly mitigated by polling inputs closer to when a swap occurs. Light guns that rely on a 60Hz raster scan may not work, may need to use 480p with black lines in that case.

Already told you it doesn't add lag (besides what's already there from vsync and from the OS) and explained why. Doubling the refresh rate of the screen while doubling the swap interval usually reduces latency anyway.

Pretty much all games that aren't PAL or strange arcade hardware run at around 60Hz. So BFI at 120Hz would work fine. Other things would have to use 100Hz or double whatever their refresh rate was.

You don't have to do that if the emulator is using dynamic rate control to prevent hitching from timing differences. Though if you wanted 100% accuracy on timing you would need to do that I suppose.

>> No.2394357

well according to some quick reviews I've read.

it has a both 60hz and 100hz modes. supports 480i and 480p ( so it's a ED-CRT)

and everyone seems to be generally impressed with the picture quality. ( has extremely high stripe pitch for consumer television))

most people in this thread will tell you HD CRTs are garbage for retro gaming, but this is an ED CRT (no 720p or 1080i)

so any type of processing should be very minimal especially if you make sure to keep 100 Hz mode off.

if I had the chance I would totally buy it. bring a game system with you and test it out if possible.

>> No.2394425

>>2394402
Picodrive is weird and seems to scale everything to 240 pixels high or something like that, which is why the scanlines look off. You can mess with the Aspect Ratio settings to fix that, though integer scaling must be turned off to make fine adjustments. Make sure to save the adjustments as a new config file solely for use with Picodrive, as that's one of the only cores that has issues with scanlines out of the box. Almost every other core I've tested works with scanlines with no need for tweaking.

As for picture brightness, the best you can do is increase brightness just high enough that blacks don't look grey (it will be obvious because they will stand out from the REAL 480p scanlines), max out or get close to max contrast, and set all colors to 100% intensity.

This is completely optional, especially if you're happy with the results, but if you're using TVOutTweaks, try setting the resolution setting to 768. It gives pixels a very slight roundness while keeping the image nice and sharp.

Maybe it's just me, but with CRTs, there is such a thing as TOO sharp. Without any horizontal blur, 240p on super sharp displays like CRT monitors looks barely any different than just nearest neighbor scaling on an LCD with black lines added on top.

yes but that doesn't matter because crt-interlaced-halation is keeping the game at the proper resolution internally

the resolution setting you need to worry about when using it is the resolution of emulating conditions of a monitor ( the resolution of the actual pixels of the simulated screen)

Nope, they can display 60fps and more. If your console output a 60Hz RGB signal, it takes it as it is. Most of the time, what they don't like are either NTSC composite signals and the likes.

Increase contrast or brightness to compensate that, though increasing brightness only makes the blacks wash out in my case. I don't know if FW900 can do this, but you could also boost the color channels to max intensity, though that has an impact on color temperature (it will probably be closer to 9300K instead of 6500K, but you can adjust down to compensate.). This Dell e771p monitor is quite bright with these settings even with the half brightness from black lines or black frames with either pseudo-240p method.

You've already been corrected, but I would chime in and say that most of yuro TV's I've seen support NTSC as well. The big ones like Sony or Panasonic have the 60hz support most often than not. And even those that are just 50hz can take RGB from a NTSC console. Of course stuff like AV Famicom or a US NES require a TV that supports 60hz in composite.

I think Bangai-O can be forced into VGA Box mod, (with the game shark or other boot disk)

but it will output at 240p @60hz and your computer monitor likely won't be able to support that resolution.

only an RGB Monitor/TV or component video enabled television could probably take that signal

you would probably have to use a VGA to component transcoder though for the television.

Dreamcast has three video modes.
Standard(Composite/S-Video, 240p or 480i)
RGB(240p or 480i)
and VGA(480p)
Third Strike supports Standard and VGA, but not RGB.
Enabling RGB mode is a very simple hex edit, but it's still frustrating that it's not enabled by default.

I think you feel that way because Zangief never made it into SFIII and Hugo has so many zany animations.

if Zangief had gotten the SFIII, treatment I'm sure his Sprite would've been on par with the rest of the craziness in that game.

http://elektrotanya.com/sony_kv-1440me2_sch.pdf/download.html
I had a few questions about this IC:
1. Can I feed it S-video on pins 2 and 31? They are marked as Y. IN and C. IN.
2. There's a pin called PAL/NT(Pin 21), which is tied to 12V. If I put a switch on my TV to switch this pin between 12V and GND, will it be able to display NTSC composite signals in color?

Inherent problem with the SNES.
1CHIP models tend to suffer less from it, and a video encoder bypass can end up removing it entirely.
I think early japanese models are also pretty lucky when it comes to it, but I'm not sure.

So I'm guessing the easiest solution to the problem would be to acquire a different SNES. If I were to go that route what would be a good way to spot the difference between the 1CHIP and others?

Also, how difficult would using a video encoder bypass be?

That's correct.

Dude who modded his SNES Mini here.

The THS7314 mod doesn't completely remove that vertical line. I've heard that certain games it will show more noticably (I used the intro to Final Fantasy 3/6, I read Earthbound creates a similar effect).

That said, my KX-14CP1 handles it quite well to begin with. I had to crank my monitor brightness right up to see the line at all. After I installed some 220uF 6.3V caps (one on the 7805 and one on each of the 5V pins of the RGB chip) the line went away completely, at least on my set.

You don't need these, it's just that sega reused that cable from the RGB SMS, which didn't have a video encoder. The cable just adjust the levels (which the CXA already does), and provides 10v for pin 8.

Building MAME cabinet with a PVM. Is a VGA to BNC cable OK?

>> No.2406190

A lot of, even newer, higher end CRT monitors have BNC plugs for RGB.
They're extremely useful for hardware bypassing DDC and other crap like that, or connecting stuff that doesn't have a VGA plug on the other end.
>>2406171
It'll work as long as either your GPU can output 15kHz or your PVM can accept 31kHz RGB signals.

>> No.2406202

>>2406171
You'll need a way to combine the horizontal and vertical sync, as well as lowering it down to something the PVM can accept(15khz).

The former can be done a number of ways. A BNC t-connector to just force the two together is the dirty way. There's a simple circuit you can build, or if you're looking for something to buy, an Extron RGB Interface does the job nicely. That requires a different assortment of cables though.

>> No.2406216

>>2406209
The 20M2MDU is 15khz only. You'll need to run a 15khz signal which probably won't be much of an issue with that card.

I'm pretty sure you need a circuit to combine the sync lines, I think that model only accepts c-sync. You're looking at a bit of hassle.

Honestly, if you wanted an easy way to connect a PC and PVM, I would have just gotten an old ATI card with S-video out. It auto-converts any signal to 480i with no issue, all you need is an S-video cable. You get very slight flicker that's totally unnoticeable with any movement. Hell, it even works with light guns.

That is the simplest way to do it, especially with that card.

>How would I go about doing that?
-Multiple people have reported that a BNC t-connector to just push the two signals together will work, but is a dirty method and not something I'd suggest doing for extended periods of time.
-There are many circuit diagrams on the internet for this purpose, this is just one of them. Whether it's something you feel like you could/want to build on your own is another question.
-As I said before, if you're just looking for something to buy to get the job done, an Extron RGB Interface will do the job. In that case, I would NOT buy a VGA to BNC cable though, since most of them use a standard VGA connector for the input, and have output over BNC.

So, my uncle is giving one of these to me for literally nothing. Only downside is, one of the bulbs iis apparently burnt out. It can't be that hard to replace, is it?

>> No.2407703

It shouldn't be, bulbs go out all the time on rear projection televisions and it was pretty common to get them serviced. I'd wager the hardest part would be locating and affording the bulb.

Honestly, I'd just scrap it. Those things are way more trouble than their worth, considering their weight and the fact that the bulbs burn out on them regularly. It depends on the model of course, but most big screen projection TVs are blurry and washed out.

Have some fun destroying it with a sledge hammer and go buy a 24" Trinitron.

This seems like it's one of those late-model chinese TV which are all the same on the inside despite shipping with a hundred different logos.

S-video is reasonable for a simple arcade cabinet. You're not going to get the best video quality possible, but if it's cheap and the screen isn't in bad condition I'd go for it. Easy to hook up to MAME.

Just bought a 19" CRT monitor off eBay, even though I don't have room for it, and will probably have to build some shelf just for it.

Why? Because it was free postage. How the hell can I turn that down? If they e-mail me and go "uhh, we can't post this for free, it's 27 fucking kilos and postage costs more than you paid for it", I'm not going to be that disappointed.

Hope I get it, though. Even though I'm going to have to build some awful makeshift shelf out of an old pallet to prop it up, because I don't want it breaking my weak desk in half.

Alright so I decided I'll use this in the meantime before I get a broadcast monitor.

My main goal right now is playing snes on it without my composite cables ruining the picture for me.

Am I right in saying I'll need this

to achieve this? The shielded scart cable should cut out the "buzzing" problem I've been reading about, and the audio breakout box will fix the issue of no audio right? Is anything here redundant or unneeded? Am I missing something?

Anywhere we can, and a little as possible.

The lack of location probably means you're in the US, doesn't it. Sigh. Ebay, hospitals, copshops, video production houses, regional TV stations, art galleries, and companies related to any of the above. Go gently, no one manning a switchboard will understand what you want, so ask for the guys who'd deal with monitors, IT, etc.

If you mean a PC CRT monitor, yes, just connect it.

If you mean an SDTV CRT or similar, still yes, but it's more complicated. Depends on TV type, connections, video card & drivers. Ask again if you want more info, I guess

Does the R290 even have a DVI-I port? OR just DVI-D?

If the former, try Soft15kHz, or powerstrip, or Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) - in reverse order.

With these you might be able to get 15kHz out of the PC, and then you need to break that out into RGBHV, then combine the H-Sync and V-Sync somehow. Most PVM's should be fine with Viletim's sync combiner.

What little DivX I've viewed over the Wii has worked fine, though H.264 is definitely spotty at best. Actual DVDs seem to read alright though.

A direct feed from a computer is always going to be your best bet, but a PS3 wouldn't be a bad choice either and definitely simpler to set up.
