Previous thread - >>2353014

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

These past few threads have been great, keep it up!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright!
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

I'm assuming you're the person with the JVC.

If it has different preset options like sport or movie, either go with just standard or pro if available.
If there's an option in the menu labeled SVM or VM, turn that off. It's nasty edge enhancement and just makes everything look like shit.
In the same aspect, if there's a sharpness adjustment, you don't want to put that too high for the same reason. Just like artificially sharpening an image introduces artifacting, the same goes for video.

Set brightness high enough to avoid black crush, or losing detail in dark scenes. This is mainly to extend the longevity of your CRT. Higher Brightness=Faster Wear on the phosphors.
Adjust contrast in line with the above. In some cases, the two are connected and affect each other even if the menu doesn't make it seem like they do.

Setting color too high will make everything over saturated. Find a happy medium that gives you vibrant, but correct looking colors.

It's hard to give general suggestions without knowing the set and what options/settings it has available. I'd also argue that you should adjust things to the point where they look good to your own eyes rather than searching for some pre-approved settings. If the TV has service menu of some kind, that's a completely bag to deal with and not really something you can say "do this and it will be good."
When doing your adjustments, either choose a game that you know its looks extremely well or something like 240p Test Suite.

I'm just going to post two photos of my new monitor. I bought it expecting more versatility and an overral better image quality for old software. It's wonderful for the many VNs that don't really get past SVGA. It also gets a decent picture for emulation, albeit it isn't impressive at all and I personally prefer the quality of my own SNES hooked up through RF. Choplifter 3 looks miles better in the real hardware, regardless of the connection type. It might be because it has awfully washed out colors, maybe. Earthbound is barely ok, though. All in all I'd say it's a mediocre monitor with average picture that just does its job. I can't complain since I got it for less than 10 dollars.

I'm pretty sure I fucked my CRT.

I went into the service menu to adjust the vertical/horizontal height and size as there was some fairly bad overscan issues.

Without even writing the changes, pic related has happened to all 60htz content. I have no idea why, and I only changed the appropriate settings to correspond with the picture adjustment.

Does anybody have any clue what's happened to the 60htz content? It's like it suddenly stopped accepting it as a format and refuses to display it properly. It's not the PS2, I've tested two.

The best way to describe it is that it's like extreme interlacing with black bars.ANY help to fix this and just get it back to normal would be greatly appreciated.

Things I've tried:

- Turning it off and unplugging it, considering I didn't write the changes
- Resetting the options to what they originally were

None of which worked.

The service manual is here, and starts relevant information for the service menu options at page 18.

Parts of Metal Slug 6 look oddly soft in comparison to the previous 5 though. Not sure why.

I realize this is probably a no-brainer question.
I wanted to play some shmups on my old sony KV tv, so I turned it on it's side, and set it on top of a milk crate for ventilation.
I've read online that rotating a CRT is totally fine, and mine was indeed fine at first but after a couple of days I saw the left 20% (or top 20%) of the screen had a very strong purple tint.
I freaked the fuck out and rotated it back to normal, and now everything's back in working order, the purple tint is gone entirely.
When I rotate it again, the purple tint comes back. This is really bumming me out because I wanted to play some god damned shmups in portrait mode.
I've never had something like this happen before, what the hell am I experiencing here?

Does /vr/ like the older black style or the newer silver style Sony CRTs? Image related.

I like the look of the older black style Trinitron TVs that have a slight curve to the screen. I mainly see the newer silver style FD/WEGA flat screens on eBay Gumtree etc. One of them had DRC-MF? I don't know much about that but guessing it isn't good for retro vidya?

29" is around the size I want with at least S-Video input. Any models in particular I should keep an eye out for? any models I should stay away from? I want to shoot things so no 100Hz.

Maybe one day I'll get that Sony BVM or NEC XM but they are rare as rocking horse shit lately.

So I may just puck up that Diamond Pro 91TXM after all, though I've got another question-
They've got a few Commodore 1702 up for sale. They originally wanted 100$~200$ for them individually, though they're included in their GOB sale, which is 60% off everything in store. Should I pick one of these up? I absolutely love the design & aesthetic of them, however, they don't support pure RGB, but a front composite input & Luma & Chroma, which I believe is S-Video. I could probably bring my PS2 there to test the composite image quality as that's the closest thing to retro I have on hand atm. Do they sell premade cables for the back? Am I going to have to commission someone to make said cables?

There's no way to give a reasonable estimate.
Depends how extensively the PVM has been used (hundreds vs. thousands of hours, etc.), the condition of the unit/tube (chassis and screen free from scratches, display hasn't dimmed over time) and the purported quality of the tube (you're looking for a high TV-line count; 600 or better).
"Shipped" throws another curveball to your price expectations. CRTs are some heavy motherfuckers, and a 20" unit will probably sit around 30kg, not including the pallet/padding required to ship it.

Use RA only when you need to.

CPS2 is all I really use it for. Occasionally PCE when Mednafen is acting up or something.

Interested in trying something CPS1 on it, but the only two games I can manage to load are Mega Twins and Strider Hiryû.
A few of the CPS2 things I downloaded aren't working either, but I dealt with that the first time and was sort of expected.
The few links I've found have said to look for a 0.2.97.30 romset, but I can only seem to locate .34/35

Ok, so I should just stick with the standalone homebrew emulators then?

Genesis Plus GX and FCEU GX have both worked perfectly fine for me, so I don't see a need to use libretro cores for those two (3/4?) systems.

I was about to say that RA's 9x Next core might have a leg up on 9x GX, but upon testing, even SMW seems to be glitched graphically.
SMW has garbage all over the place,
MMX3 has distorted scrolling during the intro stage cutscene and gets an odd duplication of the entire screen in the bottom left hand corner.
SMRPG has glitching in the intro and garbage at the save select screen.

This could be something wrong with my configuration of RAWii(which has given me trouble before) or possibly even the GPU in my Wii going. The very same games run perfectly fine on standalone counterparts, so I really don't know what's going on here.

If you decide you want to emulate GB/GBC/GBA games, grab the fork of VBA GX that's recently popped up on gbatemp. You get properly formatted 240p akin to wiiMednafen's implementation of it with considerably less slowdown.

Shantae runs correctly in the Gambatte but without the ability to have the correct aspect ratio, be it in double strike(240p etc), interlaced, or progressive.
Mednafen has the correct aspect ratio but plays incredibly slowly.
This fork of VBA will do both: http://gbatemp.net/threads/new-vba-gx-fork-2-3-0.371284/
Speed on GBA games is at least as good as the RA core. Only thing speedy I've tried out is Sonic Advance 3 and that had slowdown but was reasonably playable.

>Just out of curiosity, what controller do you use on Wii?
Pic related. SNES shape and shoulder buttons, GC face buttons, great d-pad. Quite pricey though; I spent $80 for it at the end of 2013, and they seem to be going for $100 or so now.

Classic Controllers are alright, but one of the two (pro) that I have seems to have a finicky d-pad that I'm not a fan of in the first place. The Hori Digital Pad is the same size and shape as the SNES; Comparing it to the d-pad of my SNES controller, the Hori's seems a slightly firmer but that could just be from the pad of the SNES's being more worn. Buttons feel same as any first party GC controller.

Anyway, more on topic. I got another cheap consumer CRT today and it has composite out which is strange to me, not sure why this would be useful to someone. I can use my capture card with it without the need for a splitter I suppose, but judging by the black and white image here it doesn't do any converting and is only forwarding the signal from the Y (green) cable. Nintendon't isn't emulation.

Any Wii that isn't a family model (marketed as laying down flat on the original packaging) or Mini can play GC games outright. They both still have the hardware to technically execute the code, but the former lacks the hardware for input(controllers and the like) and the latter is in locked down mode on top of that.

The only two SFX games I have any experience with at all are Yoshi's Island and Starfox.

I'm not sure where I could look to see if the former slows down, and I've never really been into SNES StarFox, so it's sort of hard to judge its speed.
A little run through of the training mission on both 9XGX and original hardware seems to show that it runs a bit slower/choppier which hilariously makes it easier for me to play. RA's 9xNext core seems to run about the same as GX, but has the same glitching as MMX3; Only appears when you take damage though. It does have an overclock option for it, but I have a feeling it's just an unused carry over option in the menu, like the black frame insertion one.
StarFox 2 runs decently enough, but I don't have a real hardware equivalent to compare to.

Found a VX900 (image from google) curb shopping today, the older CRT I was using popped a CAP but it wasn't really worth keeping so I went looking for another. Might be getting a few 22" flatscreen NEC monitors in a few days, previous owner used them for CAD work.

Anywho for something more on topic, Had KV11CR trinitron and a few systems modded for RGB out via DE-15 connectors but didn't play them anymore so sisters husband got 'em.

It kind of annoys me that top end pc CRT'S can't be fully utilized with the 400MHZ RAMDAC on most modern cards. 144hz with CRU is a dream at more modern resolutions. It's also a damn shame that less and less cards have multiple analog outputs through DVI or not and more and more don't have any AT ALL like the 290x. I know CRU can wonk out out a few CRT'S as it sets weird values to front porch/back porch/sync/blanking on really high resolutions/refresh.

I've used a few sites but they don't have timings for that specific resolution. Next best best would be the monitors service or user manual or use the next highest "standard" resolution in CRU instead of an advanced one.

Anyway anon; I personally tend to use 1920x1200 at a high refresh or if thats not good enough The A high 16:10 that fits into the monitors dot pitch after adjustments. For example you can set it so you will have "black bars" at 16:10 or 16:10 then calculate the screen space your monitor uses in that mode after you adjust the geometry and check if the dot pitch supports it or "close enough"

Well I know a lot of games are actually designed around the screens and formats they were played on the sega genesis for instance uses a lot of dithering to mix colors and make effects which essentially means to play it in purest form would be on composite out on a crt. as composite out on a LCD is generally scaled very poorly, so you would have to mod for RGB out and then it will be super crisp and lose the dithering color mixes and semi transparencies and such.

Theres a ton of things like this I personally prefer RGB out on the genesis because it looks so damn crisp, call me mega pleb for actually modding a few systems for it even.

Anyway anon if you really want it super crisp without scanlines without emulation, a lot of emulators have lots of tiny naggles (like castlevania jump height). I say go with a NEC multisync/syncmaster lcd and use the VGA in from a RGB modified system.

most of the older multisync/syncmasters will happily accept a 15khz input hence the name can be reasonably difficult to find but usually a steal.

Personally I cant find a damned good CRT at ANY second hand store as everyone dropped crt's like flies but I've found seven multisyncs four of which happily enjoyed a older consoles input.

Play on any TV set or 15kHz monitor that isn't an ultra high-end one sold as a broadcast monitor, either in RGB, S-Videon composite or whatever, it'll do the thing. Most of the time you'll either not notice the scan-lines or they'll be faint enough so that you wont brother them at a viewing distance.

DC version will output in either 480i or 480p based on the cable used.
Was testing the Extron RGB Interface that just arrived and the Dreamcast's VGA cable was the closest and simplest thing to connect it to. PVM is being fed the 480p signal as RGsB, so shows a double image.
Usually doing this would give an interlaced image, but the Interface has a neat quirk of being able to turn 480i into 240p (I think) by taking the serration pulse out of the signal.

I believe the curvature at the top is due to one of the dip switches at the back, but I'm not sure.

mm, from back when the days when sony wasn't shit
i'd buy it if i were in the market for a crt and it were cheap enough to accord with its obviously used condition
i'd also, before doing anything with it beyond a simple "does it burst into flame when i turn it on" smoke test, find its service manual and get detailed specs on its input requirements
tl;dr: you're going to want to use that component input and you're going to need three BNC-to-RCA barrels like pic related in order to connect what will undoubtedly be the RCA plugs on consumer equipment to the BNC inputs on that backplane
oh and don't bother with the onboard audio, it's going to be poor quality since this is a field monitor meant for TV production (hence the battery ports, which i encourage you to leave the fuck alone) and all that's really expected of something like this is "do we have audio at all"
ofc since this is a mobile production-grade monitor you could totally put it in your car
bonus points: mod it into the dash and have it run an rpi-based car computer (with gps and mapping) for that fallout 3 retro style

Assuming it's in decent condition and that you can get it for rather cheap, it'd make a nice little desk unit. Really wouldn't play on it from any farther than a few feet away though.
Main reason I specify cheap is that it has a pretty low TVL count of ~250, meaning while it should have a nice picture, it won't be stupidly sharp.

If not, I'm halfway through building some dongles for Soft15Khz. Windows will detect the blank EDID chips as a Generic PNP Monitor, so I could just use CRU from there without needing to program any EDID? (For which I was going to buy powerstrip, because the other utilities scare me.)

Hey, /vr/, is this input lag relevant regarding FPS and fighting games? I frankly think it's minimal and should in no way be an argument against LCDs when compared to CRTs. Besides, this is a very cheap LED TV-monitor (which is notorious for bad response time), if I properly recall it cost me less than 100 dollars. No human eye could ever hope to have such an acuity as to perceive it. Also, I frankly can't tell a difference when I'm playing Higan: it controls the same in both monitors, albeit the CRT has FAR, FAR better and brighter colors. It not even a comparison.

>> No.2384514

From my experience it's more of a consistently behind picture for input lag. IMHO only fighting games and shooters get any real benefit.

Try this ANON; LISTEN for the sound the character makes as they attack and compare it to the visual of them attacking.

I know one of my friends plays on a DLP projector, mostly because he wanted a "theatre" and for smash you can HEAR the characters attack about a third of a second (at least) before it displays. Drives me mad when your playing a game you already know the timings to. It's consistent sure, but consistently behind the image.

it's not a monitor i want to use though. It's a TV with no EDID at all. Without an EDID to override, can i pump a signal out that port like crt_emudriver will for ATI?

And what would you recommend powerstrip for? What else can I do with it? Can it be made to pump out 15kHz modes all by itself? (You don't need to buy it, btw, as the only thing you have to pay for is the ability to re/program EDID)

My friend has an ancient Philips monitor from the early 90's without EDID (but with 0.21mm and 120-or-so kHz horizontal), and CRU works fine for him.

I would recommend Powerstrip if it works with your graphics card, because it's generally easier to use compared to CRU or NVCPL. On-the-fly timing adjustment is a huge plus when messing with non-standard resolutions.

Getting interlaced analog video from a recent graphics card might be difficult though...

Curved Trinitron so you won't have to worry about the geometry quirks of the FD Trinitrons. Has:
1 S-Video/Composite Input
2 Composite Inputs(1 front, 1 back)
1 Video Out
and a separate Stereo audio out

KV-36XBR200
FD Tubes can have geometry problems, but is newer and a higher end set, so it's liable to have a sharper picture.
Has(Pic related):
2 S-Video/Composite Inputs(1 front, 1 back)
1 Composite Input
1 Component "YPbPr" Input (NOT 480p+)
2 Video Outs
and a separate Stereo audio out

27'' would be more manageable, but the 36'' has more useful inputs and possibly a better picture.
Best you'll be able to use without modding/transcoder for each system is:
Genesis - Composite
SNES - S-Video
N64 - S-Video
Gamecube - S-Video

$50 seems a bit high for either of them, but the 36'' would be more worth that amount. I'd try to talk them down a bit no matter which one you end up going with though. Definitely bring something along to test them if you're paying a decent amount like that. Either a system with 240p Test Suite (Wii, various systems via flashcarts) or a game you know very well that you'd be able to notice oddities in the picture easily.

2 Component In
1 HDMI in with a set of Stereo Audio Inputs

1 Composite Out that only works for Composite inputs
1 Stereo audio out

Supports 480p, 720p, and 1080i over Component and HDMI. 480p over HDMI is a bit jumpy on my set, but I can't say that all of them do that.
Hi-Scan model, so the tube has a horizontal resolution of 853px or so. Gamecube games over component look great, PS3 and Wii U look pretty good as well.

Obviously not the best option for retro, being that it scales 480i(and as such 240p) signals up to something it can work with, but it doesn't look too bad. Based on 240p Test Suite's lag test and compared to the PVM while feeding 480i composite to both, it has 2-3 frames of input lag.

Really wish I knew exactly what was wrong with mine and how to fix it. Think it's having a problem maintaining stable voltage; When it actually agrees to turning on, the picture size varies widely based on the brightness of the screen. Lamp code is 7 flashes, if anyone has some suggestions/ideas outside of the diagnoses listed in the manual above.

I redid the test properly this time, since in the other picture there was some frame drop which distorted the result. Honestly, anon, there is no way a human eye could ever hope to notice such a minimal input lag, it's impossible and this picture clearly proves it. This LCD set is very cheap and thus it should be in the range of a bad response time (in the specs it is said to have a 5 ms response time, which seems about right as it can't be perceived). Given that it is a TV-monitor, I hooked up my master system and, again, it is perfect, my character jumps in the very instant I press the button and the sound perfecly coincides. I can't help but deem it a myth, a common misconception. Look at how the numbers are basically the same in the pic, especially the fading 06 and the upcoming 07 - they are mixed because the numbers move at a very fast speed, but the both monitors display them at the SAME TIME- Here's the page of the test:

5 years ago lag was still pretty bad on LCDs. Nowadays I don't know how it is, maybe it's better like you say, but take into consideration there's not the same amount of lag when you feed it a digital RGB signal from your computer compared to when you send it a 240p analog video signal. Also, some people don't feel lag as much as others.

Shorten your exposure and set the CRT as your primary display. Flash could also help you get an better freeze frame rather than ghosting. This is my camera's sport setting, hand blocking the majority of the flash not obscure the screen. First set is with the LCD set as primary and the second set is CRT primary.

What specific models are yours and how are they being fed? Mine are an Asus VH238 being fed over DVI and a Dell e770s over VGA being fed the admittedly somewhat odd XGA+ resolution of 1152x864. Test matches up pretty closely with displaylag's measurement of 11ms

I'm using a dual monitor setup. The LCD screen is this model:
http://www.lge.com/br/monitores/lg-M2380A-monitores-led
It's being fed through the DVI input but with a VGA adapter, this is the CRT model which is hooked up by VGA:
http://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-syncmaster-765-mb/specs/
I'm mirroring them with an equal resolution of 1024x768. I deemed the ghosting normal because even in the example picture from the site it happens. I thought it was due to the fast speed of the transitioning numbers. Besides, I don't see the problem with my picture. It quite clearly shows that the numbers coincide. If it were something more specific, I wouldn't really trust my Nexus 4 camera. But, then, again, I might as well consider the pictures invalid because I can't really set its camera to a short shutter time as suggested in the tutorial. I still assure you there's virtually no input lag that could ever be perceived by a human eye.

>> No.2385948

>could ever be perceived by a human eye.
You can't see lag with your eyes unless it's like 3+ frames TV next to a CRT with the same signal.

I don't speak w/e language that is but you got a monitor. There's not really any image processing that goes on. Most montors like that usually don't have much lag.

And your camera sucks.

You were supposed to tell what it is by the numbers, by predicting them. It's nothing unsurmountable, it's pretty obvious actually. Who won't be able to tell 5ms correlates to response time? Also, tempo de resposta-response time, contraste-contrast are very similar. It's called Portuguese and I'll give you a very important life advice: not all Latin America speaks Spanish. The ghosting is normal to an extent; You're getting somewhere 3+ blended together, based on your image, so that's maybe 50ms+. If the exif is to be trusted, mine is somehow getting something around 2ms. No idea how though.

I'll acknowledge what you say then. However, when I used to play Tribes Ascend, my latency used to spike when the server was full. It went from 12ms to about 30 to 60ms and I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED IT. Since it was a game that took an awful lot of precision, I'd almost throw my keyboard against the wall in a hissy fit when this happened. I could perceive it. It's not input lag but I suppose it's very similar. Thus, I think such a number would be quite glaring for me.

Latency is latency. It's annoying no matter the source.

And just to be clear, I'm not saying you're getting that much input lag, only that your camera is capturing for somewhere around that length of time. It could be pretty decent processing time for PC input/monitor use.

Indeed, it was my misunderstanding. I also realized it not too long after I posted it.

>Latency is latency. It's annoying no matter the source.
I vehemently abhor latency and it's the reason as to why I gave up on online multiplayer games. I got tired of warping around and receiving messages cursing at my internet connection because I was -supposedly- lagging. Some say I have dial up or something like that and complain about how slow it is. The point is, they really don't know latency has nothing to do with the bandwidth -even an extremely slow upload speed more than suffices for all if not the vast majority of games-. What I also never tell them is that I have a 50 mb download and 5 mb upload connection. It surely is my internet instead of the miles or the continent that separate us.

ringing.
the signal is bouncing back and forth slightly between the cable ends, can be caused by a poor quality/dirty cable/connectors/termination (that 75ohm stuff you see mentioned sometimes).

some point(s) in the wired connection has mismatched impedance and the signals reflect when they move from one impedance to another.
its fairly common when you try to run analog vga at very high resolutions and refresh rates (one of the things dvi/hdmi solves for you)

think of it as light bouncing off a glass surface - the reflectivity is different depending if the glass is in air or in water

You have to deal with the possible quirks of a flat screen, but if the 27fs13 is anything like the 32, it'd be a pretty nice looking set. Nice sharp picture with a good comb filter if your planning on using anything over RF or composite.
1 S-Video/Composite input
2 Composite Input
1 Component "YPbPr" Input
1 stereo output

You lose the two s-video inputs, but gain component, which would be wonderful if you've got a PS2 around for PS1 games or a Wii for emulation.

With all the crazy PIP shit going on with the XBR, it probably has a decent chunk of circuitry shoved inside, but I don't know if that would equal having a service menu of any sort. The FS13 on the other hand definitely has one, which would make picture adjustments considerably easier.

the 15khz part doesn't matter as much as the resolution does ( in this case)

Having a 970 output a VGA signal wouldn't be advantageous at all, considering you can't passively convert RGB to component.

I don't have a fucking VGA input on my CRT. It would be a god damn nightmare to use the DVI to convert to VGA, then again convert to component. I have my DVI port as the only port that can run my main monitor, due to a monitor side HDMI input issue. I'm not going to switch it every fucking time I want to use the CRT.

Why do you all continue to try and argue when all I want is a specific recommendation based on my circumstances?

I know a VGA signal would be ideal, but it's not viable in my situation. I know HDMI to component isn't the most common solution, but in my case it's the most practical in terms of cables and usability.

Either recommend a HDMI to component converter, or don't reply. How hard is that?

DVI-I carries VGA signals natively. All you require to access it is a passive adapter just as above. You could get both of them for under $5 combined, so they would be cheap. From there, going from VGA to component would be (relatively) simple.

Have an giant mess of wires trying to get the Wii to work with it.
Doesn't want to take straight component, so I have the Y line running into the audio input on my switch box so it can act as a dirty splitter. One of them goes to the green line of the interface and the other goes to my sync stripper which in turn goes to the sync line.

Can't get it to output the signal as RGBS correctly for some reason, so I have to use sync on green. This, for some reason, causes a slight flicker in the "deinterlaced" output.
Turning off sync on green throws the image way off but seemingly reduces if not get's rid of the flicker.

I wonder if a SCART cable might make this any easier/simpler. Took some video, but the difference doesn't really pick up well; Even more so for still photos.
If anything, it looks better in the video than in person. Not really worth putting on youtube, but it is on the other /vr/ and scan-lined.

I tried to hook a wii up to an RGB interface (on my 14m2u) and it worked for the most part, my 203rxi unit seems to take component video if I use a component to VGA cable ( yours might be able to do the same). ( I had to use the sync on green switch setting))

I also tried using a VCS unit to convert 480i to 240p

but it didn't look right, it was extremely flickery and only half the screen had scanlines for some reason.

I'm thinking going with the cheaper 109xi may have something to do with it in part.
Again, getting a SCART cable and region switching may fix the issue. My head is just killing me to much to do anything else tonight.

I'm using the interface for the same purpose at the moment(sync processing) and am already planning on using it with the DC should I ever get my hands on a MultiFormat PVM. It also seems to give a slightly cleaner image from the laptop to the Megaview with RGsB than the VGA to 5BNC cable I bought.

If I manage to get my VSC working, that's great, but I'm certainly not in a rush to buy another one or anything.

>I also tried using a VSC unit to convert 480i to 240p but it didn't look right, it was extremely flickery and only half the screen had scanlines for some reason.
Not sure if I'm misunderstanding you, but the VSC won't give you 240p, only 480i. You take that 480i and use the Interface to get your pseudo-240p.
I'm just paraphrasing fudoh at this point, so I'm not going to say anything else on the matter.

Edited your image to better show what I'm dealing with; Didn't feel like getting an image for all the RCA to BNC and BNC to RCA adapters I've got tossed in there, but know just know there's something like 10 of them in use, as well as a VGA couple and a single RCA extender like in yours.

Retard here.

I'm looking for an TV that does component in 480p and has the same amount of input lag as any typical standard CRT.
I hear that 480p TVs are called EDTVs.

Basically, if I were to take a 480i/p device (like a Wii), and connect it to a standard CRT composite 480i, I want that input lag to be the same when I connect it to the new TV with 480p component.

Does such a thing exist? Or am I boned for all time?

Basically, are there CRTs that support progressive scan, and do they lag more than CRTs that don't?

>> No.2389082

>>2389070
>Basically, are there CRTs that support progressive scan
Yes, "ED" or HDCRTs support profressive scan.

>and do they lag more than CRTs that don't?
There is image processing involved if you feed them 480i or 240p video, as they cannot natively scan and display the image. My Hi-Scan Trinitron gets 2-3 frames of input lag compared to the PVM when feeding both 480i composite. I don't know what the difference would be if feeding 480p component to both would be, but I'd expect it to be minimal.

There are displays out there than can scan both 480i and 480p+ without any processing, but they're not consumer equipment and in most cases quite expensive; PVMs, BVMs, and Presentation monitors for the most part.

I want to know the diff between feeding the SD 480i and the ED 480p.
The Wii does composite 480i, and component 480p.

It really all depends on how the specific model handles image processing, but input lag should be very minimal if not non-existent.
>>2389109
That would work for 480p+ content, but a PC monitor wouldn't be able to display anything below that.

Kya, could you test something for me? if you have an HD-CRT, I always hear that they are bad for 240p because they de-interlace or line double old games.

using my Wii with component out on my Samsung LCD TV, I played Virtual Console games at native 240p (eg Sega genesis – 320x240 or 320x244)

the Samsung treats it like a 480i signal (that's bad), but If I load up Retro-Arch Wii and set it to output 640x240 or 640x244 it treats it like a normal Progressive signal!

No More unnecessary filtering and the graphics look much better, because the resolution is considered “wide” it fill the screen. But most Samsung's have a force 4:3 mode. So that works great (no un-natural stretching)

I'm wondering if this world would also work on HD-CRTs and give a scan-lined output like it does on my Sony Multiscan.

Wold that be possible?

Sort of. The interface that I have the video run through removes the bit that tells the monitor to alternate fields, resulting in a pseudo 240p. When set to underscan, you can tell the fields aren't aligning properly, which causes some jitter. It doesn't show up at the low frame rate my camera records in, which makes it look better than it actually does in person.

Only took one or two photos, since a still image obviously isn't going to show the jitter.

if natural scanlines don't appear with these various resolution settings, could you also try these custom overlay files I made for retroarch?

they work great on my Samsung LCD and provided a very nice scanline effect without the use of SLG (so it might be beneficial for HD-CRTs)

you put them in the overlays directiry of "apps" "retroarch-wii" on the SD card

For consumer stuff, it's a crap shoot. Find a model you're interested in and try to find data on it on avs or something like that.
You should also be looking locally rather than on ebay. Not only will you likely get a better price, but buying consumer CRTs on ebay is not something I'd suggest.

If you're set on buying on ebay and having it shipped(something that is quite a risk with CRTs), you might as well look for a Multiformat PVM/BVM. It'll be much pricier than anything consumer oriented that you'd find locally, but you are guaranteed to have no input lag on anything you pump into it, from 240p/480i all the way up to 1080i.

>>2389809
Eh, I prefer to just output the correct resolution in the first place if possible. The PVM is right next to my flatscreen, so there's no reason to use it for that; And with the HS420 on the fritz, they won't get used there either.
