>> No.2385228

I happen to know that in the 90's CD-roms with cleard backs existed, so it's obvious that this was a conscious decision by Sony and Playstation. So why...? Why make the back of the discs black?

The Sony Playstation had a specific kind of lazer reader, and the dark surface helped read the data at a faster bitrate due to less refraction on the surface of the disk.

It wasn't copy protection, it was only for looking edgier than a normal CD. But it was easier to explain to the masses that the same thing also acts as copy protection.

The copy protection part was a wobble in the groove of the pits on the cd, that the drive firmware checked for. It was applied during printing of the disc, and it cannot be burned as it would require special discs that have the wobble pre-built into their spiral groove.

actually they're dark violet. hold one up against a light and you'll see they're not really black. that said, was just another primitive anti-piracy measure, to combat commercial piracy known as "hongkong silvers", in which counterfeit games are produced exactly how sony, etc does it and then packaged as legitimate goods.

>>2385272

I dont think they're talking about that kind of protection, more like.... Chinese manufacturers wouldnt go through the trouble of making black cd's just for the playstation so counterfeit games would really stick out.

>> No.2385568

>>2385437
this. it was just to make it obvious when a game is pirated or not.

"silvers" (or pressed, counterfeit Playstation (and Saturn!)) games were referred to as such because the bottom of the disc was silver, instead of black (like an official disc).

There were official silvers too, mind you. Usually press disks or magazine pre-release demos.

>>2385663
wasn't that because early PS2 games came on CDs, but they switched to DVDs aggressively because, early on, they were more difficult to copy?

sony also pressed games onto silver discs way near the end too. If you got a copy of chrono cross from the sony store online recently (which was still being sold last time I checked) I am sure it was a silver disc.

"Silvers" was a convenience term from the 90s and early 2000s, referring specifically to Hong Kong produced bootlegs (Which were of higher quality than regular old CD-Rs) that were pressed like standard CDs. I'm actually kind of surprised to even see it spoken of again. Official silver PSX discs (Which were only produced way, way, way late into production, like 2008-ish) definitely look more proprietary than standard silver audio CDs.

>Which were only produced way, way, way late into production, like 2008-ish

A ton of magazine press discs were on silvers.

Really it is just a coincidence term for those bootlegs, since most CDs were either silver or golden. They are "ordinary" pressed discs with no artwork. Hong Kong bootlegs were like that because they copied discs in disc pressing plants as opposed to owning twenty CDR drives (back in the 90s, that was way more economic, given that a 1x burner could fetch a thousand dollars)

Sounds very reminiscent of "DVD-9s" from Kuala Lumpur (or perhaps that was Jakarta).

Some say that it was a form of copy protection, but as it's able to run standard silver discs it's an invalid theory. Most likely it was just to look cool.

Looks mostly. Product differentiation is important in marketing so the black underside of the game software set it apart from other CD game systems at the time.

>>2385243

This is where Sony truly set itself apart from other software media production industries at the time. Before Playstation's arrival both NEC and Sega were still using the same Shoshinkai wholesaler system for CDs as they were doing for mask roms. This gave Sony the upper hand with 3rd parties by significantly reducing production lead-times, risk and costs.

right, it's a generalization but the vast vast majority of official releases were black discs and it doesn't change the fact that most people who were around/into the scene at the time called the pressed bootleg discs "silvers"

even the resellers from hong kong, thailand, malaysia etc. called them silvers.
