Is it a good or a bad thing that Metroid 64 never happened? What would it have been like if it had existed?

There is literally no way of knowing unless we got to play the game.

I think Metroid Prime is the best indicator of what it would have been like. Prime was originally going to be for the N64 after all. It just would have been in third person (you can thank shiggy for that change). But yeah, it probably would have been similar to Jet Force Gemini I imagine. Maybe using the Ocarina of Time engine.

Thank fuck it never happened. We just got the Prime series, which is amazing. The N64 was shit, especially at 3D. Yes I had one, and yes I was also a PC gamer during the 3D acceleration era and I realize that the N64 was far ahead of its competitors in terms of acceleration.

It still looked like shit.

I generally agree with that. I never liked the 3D stuff, although it generally looked good in motion. I always thought screenshots looked fucking awful. I wanted more complex 2D graphics, not 3D.

A lot of people enjoyed Castlevania 64, me included. It isn't a perfect game, but the good stuff makes up for the shortcomings (mainly the camera which is a common issue with most 3rd person action games at the time)

Hard not to when you have people who are passionate about the hobby and someone comes along and says it's shit.
Doesn't help either when that someone is perceived as a kid-to-young adult that enjoys nothing but hating games, drama, and making fun of mentally disabled children. You know someone from /v/..

When this board first started that was really kept to a minimum. People had their opinions. It's great to hear different viewpoints. Bunch of games I never would had tried if it weren't for that.

As the board gets older it's not going to last.

I liked how Castlevania 64 looked. Some levels, like the underground caves was kind of boring, but the mansion level was amazing. dracula's castle entrance too.

>> No.2385390

/vr/ was great when it was new but like most things, such as video games, once popularity hits a certain level it goes to shit. It truly was a friendly board and it's extremely apparent that /v/ has spilled into it.

On topic, I think most people are right in saying it would be like Castlevania 64. I could see Jet Force Gemini as well with a mix of Mega Man 64 too. All those things together make it sound very mediocre though and maybe it was good the N64 got skipped.

Another possibility is that it could have been amazing and would have changed the popularity of the series completely in a similar way of Ocarina of Time.
Where do you think the series would end up if it had a breakout game on the N64?

Seriously if you didn't have your mind blown by Conker you didn't play it when it was released.

With the right amount of technical know-how, programmers could work some real magic with the n64. Given how great most of the first-party games ended up, and that action-adventure was one of the stronger genres on the n64, it probably would have been a pretty awesome game.

Even Samus's model in Smash Bros is pretty fucking sweet, and that game is known for having weak character models.

I'm sure something like Mega Man Legends or Jet Force Gemini would have been decent and remembered as one of the better titles on the 64 but thanks to the absence of the franchise we got Prime, which was phenomenal and probably one of the best games Nintendo has produced to date. Retro Studios has done excellent work with the company and a history where that doesn't happen would be a shame.

I think Castlevania 64 is the benchmark for "your game must be better than this to be published", at the least by Nintendo standards.
Once you sit down with it, the only real problems it has is that the grab model is very awkward due no properly working IK interactions. It has hard platforming in 3D, and the framerate is low. And combat is a little awkward.
Its still a good game.
And I think Metroid 64 would be around the same area. One or two mechanics might have been too janky and weir for them to really attempt it.

>> No.2388891

>>2388843

Combat in CV64 gets better once you figure out that you can dodge by slightly tilting the stick either left or right, or backwards. Fighting enemies like vampires gets much better when you do this.
Anyway, I imagine Metroid 64 would be more similar to JFG or MM Legends instead of Castlevania 64.

CV64 actually feels like a mix between classic Castlevania with linear levels, and bits of survival horror, whereas JFG and MML are designed more like Metroid. Mega Man Legends especially with its inter-connected underground maze. It's practically a 3D Metroid.
