>romhacks for the game are in ppf format

lol that basically confirms the game is just running emulation of the Playstation game right? It's nto even a proper port! And it's not even good emulation either, as there's slowdown that fans had to fix. Plus there's that flowery pseudo-shakespeare dialogue.

What a joke of a port.

Fan made right? So why exactly do yo think it's okay to punch down fans of something who put their own time into making something for their own amusement? It doesnt hurt you. You think you could do it any better? Only thing this rant of yours indicates is that you're an insecure jerk who needs to treat other things to shit to pretend you arent shit.

>>2382647
I agree. The slowdown is an absolute joke, isn't it even worse in the japanese release? The new dialogue doesn't sit well with me as well, mainly for nostalgia reasons, though. Limiting ceraint item drops to multiplayer was another decision that pissed me off. The cutscenes are nice to look at but the dub sucks, as with all dubbed JRPG audio.

I own the game and last year i had the urge to play through it once again but i wound up just grabbing the eboot of the PS1 original after the first two battles.

>> No.2382747

>>2382647
Wow. I'm sad that people fell for this bait.

War of the Lions isn't a fanmade patch or fanmade port. It IS a poorly done official re-release, with stretched picture and slowdown.

The fan patches you can use on it are in ppf format, but that doesn't mean it's a Playstation game being emulated. Just because games on the NES and SNES can be patched with ips patches doesn't mean they're both actually just NES games.

Plus, they'd have to do some real weird shit to add all the extra content and PSP resolution CG cutscenes if it was JUST being emulated.

So yeah, it was poorly done. It can be fixed with fan patches to be equivalent to the PS1 version, but with new cutscenes, a new translation, and some new side missions. There's also fan patches to restore the old PS1 translation if you want. Personally, I feel the extra content makes it the better version (once you patch out the problems), but that's just a personal opinion.

>> No.2382762

Which translation do you guys prefer? Original, or WoTL? I honestly prefer WoTL.

>> No.2382769

WotL, but they should cut down on the flowery text a bit. At least include multiple accents like in FFXII. Not every character spoke Shakespearean.

.ppf format is usually used for patching .iso files, not just PS1 games.

If they did that with the slowdown it's news to me.

The slowdown was even worse on iOS when it first popped out. It's probably the sole reason why there isn't an Android port.

>> No.2382950

The thing that's almost never brought up when comparing the two versions is how they comepltely screwed up the music (and to a lesser extent the sound effects) in WotL by removing all reverb among other things. No fan-patch to fix that! Also that if you use the patch to "correct" the aspect ratio it will still be all wrong since while the stretched the sprites they did increase they did properly extend the view of the backgrounds meaning that you will get squashed picture instead of a stretched one. There's just no way to win there!

Both are kinda bad.

WoTL is more accurate. But everyone talks like a fag. They also use weird name translations for no reason to create these awkaard names.

Original has nice dialogue. But less accurate. Some parts, like tutorial and others were so quickly rushed they are incoherent.

I would like a new text that uses WoTL as a basis, which strips it of the pseudo-Shakespearean and they just talk like normal people.

Sync issues, most likely. I'm no professional programmer, but it seems like simply leaving each players' screen asynchronous and syncing up at the start of each character's turn would've worked just fine. I'd rather slowdown just before moving someone than slowdown mid animation.

Not as bad as it sounds. They added a couple of extra equipments but some of them can only be gotten by doing co-op missions. None of the old stuff got taken out and I think the iOS version actually integrated the new co-op only stuff into the game since that one removed multiplayer.

Its needlessly complicated.

Saying "Fuck off or I kill the girl"

vs. talking about spilling crimson goop from a fair maiden.

I can take either. I personally like the original just because its hilariously bad at parts, mostly from Algus.

Animals have no god.
Well, do your best, you spoiled rotten boy.
etc.

Its amazing.

But, you know, I can see why you wouldn't like it. It takes longer to process what the person is saying, I have a more technical mind, so a simpler more concise dialogue is generally favorable in my eyes, but sometimes I can enjoy the flavor.

You idiot.

+1 for faux-Shakespearean bullshit being terrible.
It's not that I think the characters should speak "normally" or whatever, it's that it's almost universally done TERRIBLY.
Take Cyan from Final Fantasy VI (played by John Cleese), for example. He's an absolute mess of misused words. Frog from Chrono Trigger is even worse, but it's arguable that his curse makes him speak in a somewhat nonsensical manner. Nonetheless, his head should be cut off for using "thou" to the goddamn QUEEN.

So lemme guess, you only know iambic pentameter because that dialogue happens to be in tetrameter and isn't awkward at all.

>> No.2384615

Personally I rather they spoke in easily understandable English. Having a character or two that spoke in accents or in a weird way is alright but there is a breaking point. This is why I can never play Dragon Quest IV on DS. I get to the 3rd chapter and just had it with it and quit. While the NES version is perfectly readable and also enjoyable.

That was actually done to make it more in line with the original Japanese version where it was unstealable. Other changes made to closer reflect the orignal Japanese version was increasing CT of summons and certain spells, higher prerequisites for Jobs, decreased JP gain, nerfed stats for Ramza, Delita, Orran, and Cloud and harder bosses. So basically the PSOne English version is Easy Mode.

The only thing they made easier in WotL (for both the Eng and Jap version) was the infamous Wiefgraf fight.

It's terrible, friend.

Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy 12 had a fantastic translation in the style that FFT tries for (and fails miserably at)

That's what happens when you cheap out on a good translater. I think the guy who did TO did FF12 as well.

Yeah, Alexander O. Smith. He also worked on Vagrant Story.
