IMO, like most Toaplan games it's a little on the bland side and the levels go on forever. Some groovy tunes on the MegaDrive port, but for older Toaplan I think you're better off playing Fire Shark or maybe even Twin Hawk (which is ironic because of my complaint of blandness).

Zero Wing isn't bad and I like launching enemies at one another but it's on the lower end of the oeuvre.

"Shmup" was invented way back in the day by the british gaming press. One of the big magazines of theirs around the late-80s/early-90s or thereabouts. It comes naturally if you start trying to play for score instead of just survival. You'll start learning where you want to be, and what you need to do to minimize the danger of the situation while still getting points. For the really insanely tough scoring tricks, you can leave those till later and try a more survivable option.

In CAVE games, this can really benefit you since they tend to drop a couple point based extends, and the games just have really fun scoring systems in general.

Moai is probably the hardest stage for me after the last one, because it's just so easy to get sniped in the back. My runs usually end on the Moai but if I get past it I'll probably at least make it to the final stage.

This game was really hard to beat for me, and it took so long, I guess because I'm pretty new to shmups, and you're pretty much allowed no mistakes in this one, since one little mistake usually means a game over.

It's a very straight port, with the exception of reduced difficulty which makes it great for beginners, an added stage between the inversed volcano and tentacle one and hidden bonus stages.

So now that I've beaten Gradius, I'm trying to figure out some strats for recovering after I die.
I started with the last stage, since it's been such a problem, and I guess as long as you memorise exactly what to do and how to move, it isn't completely impossible like I thought it was, but it's still really easy to screw things up. So far, I've been able to survive long enough to get missile and double back, which should make things less painful from then on. I'm more worried about the stage 6 boss, and its bullet spam. Dodging all that shit on the fly seems pretty unreliable, unless I can find a safe spot somewhere.

True, sometimes if you die and you don't have one, you just have to live long enough to get one and then die to start over. So a death can cost you two lives.

I think I can handle most of the checkpoints in stage 7 now. The second one is probably the hardest with bullets raining down on you the whole way through, thanks to those guys that shoot in rings.

Straight-shot on first play when learning the game's systems. Good baseline for learning patterns when popcorns are bursting everywhere.
Spread or sway-spread when good enough to play for score. By then enemy patterns are well-known and I can tweak timing to extend combos. Experimental period.
Then back to straight-shot for quick runs. Focused fire tends to take down larger craft faster, just enjoy that kind of play more.

How come N64 never really had shoot 'em ups?

(I think there's one well-known one, and a few JP exclusives).

N64 missed several genres. Development of 2D games was not friendly on that console. I'm sure it could have been done, but it was easier and cheaper (and had a larger install base) on the CD-based consoles, these reasons are well known. That is the answer to every "why wasn't ______ on the N64?"

Any sort of genre that was mainly popular in Japan is not to be found on the N64, which was a hit mainly in North America.

The N64 has way more processing power than the Playstation. The reason there are only a handful of 2d games on the system is because Nintendo didn't let developers make them for it.

>> No.2376345

>>2376337
Can the N64 hardware do 2d sprite games?

This might be bullshit, but I've heard that it was "too advanced" for proper 2D, and games like "Yoshi's Story" are actually 3D polygons designed to look like 2D.

>> No.2376357

>>2376345
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It doesn't have any specialized hardware for it, but the processor is fast enough to handle any sort of fancy effects.

The only fully 2d game I can think of is Mortal Kombat Trilogy, but that's only because Nintendo mostly forced devs to put 3d stuff in the games. Ogre Battle 64 and Mischief makers are mostly, though not entirely, 2d.

Also, Nintendo's own games are full of sprites. Mario, Zelda 64, and Mario Kart 64 all have tons of them.

So after playing around with RAM watch a little, it turns out that the rank in Gradius increases on its own just from surviving. It looks like it goes up by 1 every ~32 seconds the player doesn't die. It also increments after each stage, and it's capped at 15. So it turns out limiting your options etc doesn't do a whole lot except leave you underpowered. The best way to do rank control in the first game is to kill yourself.
Then it goes back down to the base level for that difficulty setting, between 0 and 3.

Also +1 for Missile, +1 for each Option you have, and +2 each for Laser and Shield. For some reason having Double doesn't increase the rank. Nor does speed.

best way to answer this is to create your own reference points. check out bulletmagnet's "shmups 101" article in racketboy and scroll down to "developers of note". pick out a couple or three top-rated ones from each dev and play a few credits on each. try a shmup a day; will take a month or so to complete, but afterward you'll have a much better idea of the quality and variety of what's out there.

that's more or less what i did a few years back, although it took a lot more research as as that article didn't exist at the time. coincidentally, the first shmups that hooked me were ikaruga and eosd, but my tastes have changed considerably after putting in a couple thousand hours into the genre.

and toho is a series. some games are good, some aren't so good. more people should try podd, though, that's for sure.

I started 2, the crystal stage is being a bit of a shit. I guess it's like the Moai from the first game, it gets much more manageable when you make a consistent route through it.

I did get pretty far in the Famicom port, at least until a certain boss rush, where one of them tried as hard as it possibly could to give me a seizure. I died trying to minimalize my looking at it, and it still made my head hurt for a while afterwards. Some of these older games tend to have that problem. Holy Diver is another game that REALLY wants you to have a seizure.

I've also been playing Gradius III SNES, but the high speed stage kicks my shit in every time. I usually die to the plant boss from losing track of his bullets when they go behind him.
And I can't even get past stage 2 in the arcade one. There's one point where there are just too many bubbles to deal with, and I can't get rid of them in time.

Now that is some shitposting.

Shmups can be pretty deep affairs. You can spend months playing the same game, learning it, and refining your play for a high score. Many of the games have lots of subtle mechanics to the scoring or gameplay that aren't apparent unless you've gotten pretty familiar with them.

When I was first starting out, one of the biggest surprises I had was finding out that I was completely awful at predicting the games I really ended up loving. I learned that there was a lot of nuance to STG games, and for many of them you have to play quite a few hours for things to "click" and get the scoring or gameplay systems to make sense. For a lot of shmups, you just have to straight up be good at the games in order to effectively evaluate the gameplay systems; sucking prevents you from scoring, meaning you need some skill in the game in order to even experiment with the higher level mechanics.

That just takes time, and everyone's tastes are different. Some people will find high-level Ikaruga play to be an infuriating exercise in exact repetition and dislike it strongly. Others consider it fascinating puzzle to be worked out that demands the best a player can give, and love the game. The point is, is that you can't figure out which side you sit on until you've actually put in the hours and tried to crack a game.

Some guy made a thread on system11 saying he heard from a source that a PS4 version would be announced later this year. In response:

It's awkward as fuck, and some of the gaps the game forces you through are stupidly precise with a hitbox like that. The game is 100% IWBTG-tier memoshit anyway. Enemies take way too long to kill at low power, so you just have to remember how to position yourself the whole way through so they don't fly into you, and most of them have ridiculous movement patterns that aren't easy to remember.

I imported it before it was localized, and it's peculiar for a shmup because you're on the ground walking around and there's obstacles and various paths to take. Busting through a plateau in anything is hard. You always get to a point where you can't make any progress, or seem to be getting worse. It's really, really hard to get past that.

First off, not shmup but just in general try to make sure you're getting enough sleep/nutrition and some exercise. Basic stuff but it makes a huge difference in motivation, consistency, etc.

Two things really help. First is just to track and log your progress. It's easy to just fire up a game and go, but keeping some sort of brief log and taking a note or two on a replay will give you a ton more insight into where you're really having trouble.

Second is to just try to narrow your focus and aim for small goals every session. Its so easy to get overwhelmed and say something like "stage 4 just murders me", when the real problem might be 3 or 4 specific patterns. If one seems too complicated, you can still make progress in a practice session ("I need to start over here on the screen" or "I need to be moving in this general direction while dodging" for example). Eventually all those little things add up into a whole stage.

It takes a lot of work to 1cc a game, but the feeling of clearing for the first time is indescribable. Just stay consistent, and focus on your one little goal per session. Take notes, especially for full runs, and generally try to not get emotional about stuff. Eventually it does come.

depending on the game they might give you invincibility or constant max power ups which might help plan out your routes, they might unlock new ships, modes, stage select, display ranking in yagawa games, and so on

Wow this is really making me want to play the game.

But seriously this is what I mean - Batsugun is like "hell yeah oldschool shmups, oh look some anime characters" but it's not a big deal.

this game makes me embarassed to play it. look it's anime schoolgirl right in your face. right on your tv screen. anime bosses.

What really saddens me is that it's the direction the Donpachi series decided to take. Donpachi was cool because it had a cool cybertech feel with that cocky co-commentator,
>WATCH YOURSELF KID
It was great. it was acceptable.

this is like
>ona donodonpachi koriestu desu!! ~~

I just don't get the schoolgirl aesthetic. If it was some anime pilots or something sure but this is covered in weird schoolgirl fetish shit. Why did they go from cool cyberpunk shit to this?

>voice clips
Yeah screaming little girls in Japanese right great, ok have fun, I'll stick with my Raiden and Aero Fighters because that had taste, that had subtlelty, at least.

(plus it's a modern bullet hell type shooter where all fun is taken out anyway and all about "score attack" and "score systems", and it's like mannn it's just not the same anymore, so gameplay wise I'm not interested anyway)

I'm getting a lot of mileage out of the PSP collections of Parodius/Salamander/Twinbee/Gradius during my commute. I'm not a huge fan of Danmaku but if the mechanics are good I'll give it a shot.

I find it enjoyable yet I can't shake the feeling this was somekind of stealth development by Seibu Kaihatsu as it has the all famous tooth paste laser trademark

Not necessarily, good shmups mix in some unpredictable shit along with some static shit (like how Battle Garegga bosses never do exactly the same things in each run). Also for a Treasure game Ikaruga's bosses are fucking shit.

>> No.2393739

So, in your opinion R-Type games are also shit then or what?
What's next, Gradius? Bosses in shmups do not have to act randomly, they often already hard enough.

>> No.2393764

>>2393739
At least Gradius has a rank system and loops, and lots of generally cool bosses.

Ikaruga is just a meme game.

He didn't praise Gradius, he just said it was a shit shmup, cause it does not have randomly acting boss battles.
Also, Gradius is old school as fuck, while Ikaruga is rather pretty new. No wonder he doesn't try to dis Gradius.

If Ikaruga had horrible shit graphics and noone would play it, I bet he would praise it like the second coming of christ.

Since when did Gradius have 100% static enemies like Ikaruga? Crystal/bubble stages alone are more intense than anything in Ikaruga.

The enemies are just as static as in Ikaruga. The only difference is that you can aggro them, but this doesn't make them any less predictable. Same goes for umpteens of other great shmups. They are all 100% predictable, if you know the situation well enough.

I honestly dont care much about Gradius. Perhaps it has some little random attacks, i dont care honestly, but saying shmups must have random stuff to be good is just bullshit.

Why does every shmup thread have to have people fighting over Ikaruga?

>> No.2393859

>>2393849
The problem with Ikaruga is that it has nothing interesting going for it to spice up different playthroughs. Every run is just as methodical and precise as the last one. This makes the game very repetitive and insipid to replay compared to many other shmups out there. Fuck, even Ikaruga's predecessor was more interesting to play, because it at least had some great boss designs and decent (if sparse) level design.

>> No.2393865

>>2393859
The replay value of Ikaruga is the same as in every other good shmup. It is about getting better and better and constantly improving your runs.

If you honestly think you can just play this game one time and instantly be a master at it, you must be out of your mind. It takes umpteens of hours of practice to become really good at this game.

>> No.2393868

>>2393865
Yeah it took me 30 hours to be able to 1cc and A rank every level on Normal. Thats a lot of time for a 30 minutes game and I didn't even master it.

>> No.2393889

>>2393865
But why would you want to master memoshit like Ikaruga when you could be playing fun shmups like Batrider, Mars Matrix, or Slap Fight Special instead?

>Batrider, Mars Matrix, or Slap Fight Special
R-Type is also "memoshit" as you call it, and it totally shits on these games.
Memorization is also a skill and not easy to handle. If a shmup has a lot of memorization skill based gameplay, then it also means that you will have to develope a lot of tactical gameplay. Twitch-based shmups are rather much more boring, imo, since you don't have to use your head as much in them, compared to really painstakingly detailed enemy placement as in "memoshit".

In games like R-Type you always have to use your head and pay a lot of attention to your positioning. It's a bit like playing chess. Twitch based shumps are just for dumb football players.
