Silver Surfer for NES

Both been done by AVGN but Ghosts'n Goblins and Ninja Gaiden (both NES) are two of the games I personally could not finish yet after many years. Another one would be R-Type, arcade or any of the good ports (PC-Engine, PS1)

Gradius 3 (arcade) and Battletoads (NES, North American version) are sadistically hard.

I'd also say Chakan: The Forever Man for Genesis/Mega Drive

Quest of Ki, nice game that almost becomes a puzzle due to the odd controls. The first 60 floors are pretty straight forward and can be skipped on through to level 61, at which point the game becomes hard as diamond dicks. It's incredibly addictive because you always feel like you're about to figure it, just one more life, one more try...

Battletoads is totally doable. Gradius 3, on the other hand, is impossible.

I can't even beat the first half of the first stage on ActRaiser II.

Amagon for NES is fucking ridiculous. I had it as a kid and could never make it past the third stage. Enemies spawn constantly, you die in one hit, and there's no continues. Even on an emulator with save states it's pretty difficult.

From Wizardry, 4 is a real ballcrusher for sure. For another crazy difficult RPG, check out Deathlord for the C64. Possibly a top 3 longest RPG of all time, and it has permadeath.

Definitely try Wizardry 4 and Gradius 3, I couldn't tell what the top 10 hardest games are but I can tell you for sure that King's Field, Battletoads, Mr. Gimmick and Legacy of the Wizard are not among them even though people say they are hard. I'm not that great at video games and I've beaten them.

not as hard as it's reputation suggests. there's only a few stages and infinite continues, it's all memory. can easily be beaten in a day

NG III, even with it's limited continues and harder NA difficulty isn't as hard as the first game IMO. personally I would put any of the NG games
