How does the range of weapons work?

I changed my alchemist to a Valkyrie, but now one of my four melee people won't be able to attack since only the first three slots seem to be the "front"

What do I do now? Am I obligated to have 3 ranged people? Should I train the Valkyrie in bows?
PS. The plan is thief to ninja, fighter to samurai, bard to mage, priest to bishop and other fighter to idontknowyet, maybe another samurai

Also the alchemist was going to be a ranger, but then I read how shitty they were and I needed a Valkyrie anyways.

I could change one of the fighters to ranger, I guess that would work but then again, shitty..

Valkyrie should be able to use spears from the back.
Characters with Ninjutsu can hide and attack from the shadows even when they're in the back row.

Swell
But should I use spears with her? Are there good spears around, or would be better for her to use swords? I'm just assuming there are better swords, like in every other rpg..

There's a great spear exclusive or valkyries later in the game and a good one before that.
>I'm just assuming there are better swords, like in every other rpg.
That's not really true.

I like that game but that retarded frame ratio. it's not even a golden ratio either.

I decided to use axes and hammers with my dwarf and make him a lord
The valkyrie is learning swords, the thief is hiding in the back, the lizard shall be a samurai, the bard is a mage and the priest is a bishop.
Also I just killed that floating rock face and stole its ruby.

Not like anyone cares.
I'm just procrastinating.

Is this Bane of the Cosmic Forge? I bought that yesterday, read the manual but did not get around to whipping up a party yet.

Switching weapon skills isn't a huge deal anyway since you learn by doing. Switching classes is also relatively easy and doesn't normally ruin your progress.

Did the SFC port fix change the system of carrying capacity and regeneration being solely dependent on your starting choices?

So, I whipped up a party and got started. I started mapping right away as I'd already be hopelessly lost otherwise. Love the balls to the walls difficulty here, walked into the basement and got promtly murdered by a bunch of slightly larger household critters than I could handle. This is a MAN'S game, people. No dicking around at all.

Snes version is better and has automap.
Also is that priest in the front? At least in my version the front row is the first 3 slots right to left.
And why don't you have a bard? Free lute/sleep is a must

SNES doesn't have the option to export to 7 and 8.

I'm playing without outside input, so I just put together what I thought looked fun. I'm fully prepared to start over once I know what I'm up again. I put the priest in front planning to arm him with a mace and shield, he is pretty tough. Don't know if that's a horrible idea. I wanted to change to ranger to valk at some point anyway, then the priest could be in back with a sling.

I prefer drawing my maps myself anyway, and so far the area of the castle seems pretty confined anyway.

6 is easy to map as long as you realize when you've entered a new area. Only the river has some issues due to its size and wraparound. some of the dungeons are linear and don't require maps.
How does the SNES even handle the three dimensionality? I can only scroll the map for the present floor with now way to change levels. The mines and pyramid in particular can require spatial awareness.
