Just started playing this /vr/, what am I in for?

>> No.2366291

A good game with a lot of grind-based slowdown in action. It's far worse if you go the multiplayer route, though.

>I need to change my weapon.
>I should equip that other one, instead, so we can cross gaps.
>I want the one you're using.
>I should REALLY level my attack spells, so every enemy that appears is getting hit with 6 of them.
>My healing and buff spells are shit, I'll just drain my MP on low-cost spells until you want to murder me.

Why the hell they didn't re-release this on the Gamecube with GBA support, I'll never know.
Doing it now with local wireless wouldn't be bad, either.

a humorless bland story, combined with generic characters, the world's most retarded NPC AI and great music

Alone?
A mediocre action RPG.

With a couple of buddies?
One awesome evening.

The first RPG I played at the age of 14. I didn't even know games went beyond platforming (in Yuropoor at the time). I can't tell you anything OP, my vision is blinded by nostalgia.

Also the sequel has better gameplay, though I prefer the atmosphere of SoM.

An action-RPG with spells being undodgable is bullshit. And the 'skill/item wheel' is always a pain in the ass.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. It has bad to mediocre gameplay and great music and atmosphere. I occasionally find myself wanting to play the game only to remember why I don't like playing it 15 minutes into a session.

Feel the same way about the Legend of the Mystical Ninja though I like it better.

Why don't you just fucking play the game and find out

>> No.2367221

I find it pretty annoying that the screen doesn't start scrolling until your character is positioned at 75% edge of the screen. Difficulty spike is not well evened out. For example, anyone playing for the first time is pretty much going to wipe at the tiger boss early on.

tl;dr the game aged horribly.

You are in for being raped by this guy.

To be fair, if you don't get the girl early, you've to safe her from werewolves a little before the tiger, and that fight is already a thorough 'Hm, maybe I should level a bit' moment.

Though I agree in principle. The most difficult part is the beginning, once you get magic it becomes a cakewalk until the volcano. Which is a stupid 'Either you found the fucking feline and bought the bestest armour ever on the island, or you die' difficulty split.

Most of the weapons are padding one will never use, the magic does, as noted, make bosses too easy, the dungeons are obscenely simple.

On the other hand, it's pretty, the characters are fun, and the soundtrack is fantastic.

Also, you only need to grind seriously at the beginning. After that, there's a bit of magic grinding (Which is fast enough that it's hardly grinding at all), but you otherwise coast through the fights without needing to seriously pause your journey to level up.

It's not an all time great, but I wouldn't call it bad, either. It has its flaws, but it's fun.

superior sequel coming through

>> No.2368735

>>2368494
SD3 is way more engaging to play since for the most part the combat is way more fast paced outside of a handful of battles. But it usually devolves into mashing the attack button and hitting special once it fills to green.

I do feel its better in the pacing and story though. I do really wish we got the intended translation or it got pushed to teh PS1 or something. Even today sometimes I still don't know what the fuck goes on in SoM.

I literally get to this part and every time I end up grinding and spamming save at Neko due to the trauma I suffered as a child with my friend.

>> No.2368772

Good music, combat is kinda fun, especially with a friend or two. Also on the easy side, especially if your friend can manage buffs properly.

I liked it more that SD3, which I played it for the first time last month. It seemed superior initially, but something about the melee attacks just doesn't feel right. I didn't even finish it.

Yeah, the soundtrack is very hit or miss. It's either soothing or grating depending on the track.

Soothing:

Fear of the Heavens:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKR2yNy4yOA

Fond Memories:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dhpIEerwng

Grating:

The Oracle, Dark Lich

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPJgzbGwdyI

It Happened Late One Evening, Dwarf Village

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyh-76qdVeU

A significant portion of the tracks have an almost piercing quality to them. It can wear on the ears after awhile.

Only my personal opinion, of course. I happen to like the other boss theme quite a bit. Very intense, but I could see others finding it grating after awhile.

Pretty sure after you beat Mech Rider 3 and Tree Palace sinks back into the ground, he's on the east/right side of the Tree Palace with his super armor for sale.
