2359645 No.2359645 [Reply] [Original]

Since the code-names for this console were Dural and Katana, I think that this means top quality of molding and the console itself is supposed to be a cast. But I couldn't find any confirmation of this anywhere. So what do you think?

>> No.2359648

I always figured it was meant to be like a device that 'broadcasts dreams.'

A little sappy, but still a far better name than fucking 'Wii.'

"dream" and "broadcast"

>> No.2359921

It actually doesn't have any meaning. It was a random arrangement of American letters that they thought sounded cool.

>> No.2359932

I always thought it was like fishing; you're casting our for dreams, but I think the dream broadcast is the best explanation

They had a contest to name the console and Dreamcast won. You'd have to ask the guy who came up with the name.

I also heard the dream+broadcast thing. The cool thing is that what a Dreamcast is is very open to interpretation. To me it always sounded as if you were casting dreams the way you cast spells. I remember one day this was bein discussed either here or in /v/ and I read about four more interpretations apart from mine. What is a Dreamcast to you, anon?

In the original design specs it was supposed to link to your brain via wifi and allow you to play games using a "lucid dream" style interface.

I am upset that this isn't a thing by now.

I mean we pretty much live in a cyberpunk dystopia already, just without the neon or neato augmentations.

There was no such thing as wifi then, the idea was to make it wired.
Don't exactly know what happened (it's pretty much a mistery) but they couldn't do it. Anyway they got close even if they settled with almost traditional controllers, playing it felt like a dream.

>>2360061
Maybe this guy mom's know (since you named her in a context with sega, dreamcast, dreaming and lucid dreaming interface i can't help to imagine your mom as a very attractive woman)

From what I remember Dreamcast was intended to be similar to a "dream team" type of definition. Like a dream-cast of games/systems/whatever.

This. I remember reading in a magazine interview at the time (possibly EDGE) that it was because of the group of people involved with it's creation - they were a 'dream team'. Another word for team is cast, so 'dreamcast'.

According to Katsutoshi Eguchi, Kenji Eno claims to have anonymously submitted the Dreamcast name and spiral logo to that naming contest and won.

Whatever sounds good, I think. Like naming cars. Whatever grabs the attention of the viewer. Associating dreams with games is a nice way to sell their idea. But I dont think their codenames have much to do wit hthe final name.7

I have no citation for this but around early 1998 there was a reader poll in one of the major Japanese magazines and the majority of people thought Sega's then-unnamed 128-bit system should be called the Turbo Guppy. Not making this shit up.

Yes, because the expression "cast a wide net" means that you want to release a ton of shit. See, there's this thing called "context" which can change when you combine certain words in the same statement.

Ever hear of fishermen? You know, the guys who CATCH fish with nets? Guess what the act of throwing their nets out is called? I guess you better tell them that they're actually "releasing" those fish.

>> No.2370928

>>2369885
I think fishermen already know what cast means. That's why they don't catch nets to cast fish.

Regardless of how exactly they came up with the name for the thing, that splash screen was one of my favorites, right next to the original Playstation.
