Let's talk about early online multiplayer. Specifically, I'm interested in retro games with an online community that exists even today, even if it's Russians playing CS1.6 for all eternity. I just stumbled across Aleph One and found that there is still a group of people there, playing and everpresent.

The upswing of this conversation is that we can find games to play together.

You haven't heard of worlds.com?

Basically it was a Second Life clone that was semi-popular in the 90s and died off pretty quick, but there's a very small but very dedicated community that keeps shit alive.

That's not true. Games are called clone when a specific gameplay or style is used.

Second life is the game that is know to have started that genre.

Similar to Animal crossing. There's the Jap version that came before. But no one cares about that version. People know Animal Crossing not Dōbutsu no Mori.

If I'm playing an online game I and I see "jajajaja" in the chat I know I'm in for a bad time. I can't communicate with that person and for some reason or another that person queued for an American server. So that leaves me with the opinion that the person is an idiot and doesn't know where South American server is or that person is going to American servers to troll.

You can see where the dislike comes from and it's not based on racism. They guy could be purple for all I know. What's effecting me is he's not speaking English and he has the option of not fucking my game up but chooses not to.

Thing is, most Russians playing online on the western servers (especially CS, DOTA and LOL) are 12-17 year olds, that in Russia itself are called "Shkololo" - a degragatory combo of schoolkid and "lol". They are the cunts that like to make life harder to people, and piss people off the most in the netgames (russian community included).

Regular Russian players usually know and speak english, as well as rarely come out as Russian (they usually present themselves as Romanian or Ukrainian) for the fear of being kicked from servers because of the usual racism.

I remember playing online in the late 90s, and all the servers were small enough with the same people frequenting them enough that people knew each other. People minded their manners, there was a "community" among people for lack of a better word, and generally you wound up with a reputation as you played. It was all sort of a gentleman's agreement between each other, don't rock the boat, don't shit the place up, everyone's welcome here so long as you're not an asshat.

And then one year, the crowds started rolling in. At first, it was the server browser being popularized, where anyone could quickly and easily jump into a game with just a short search. Suddenly, instead of having a saved or in some cases handwritten list of servers one liked to frequent, people were using server browsers to search for their favorite maps and just joining whenever. There were at first dozens and dozens, and then hundreds, and then thousands, and then tens of thousands of servers available for anyone to join, and with improvements in the infrastructure of the internet and lowering of pings to anywhere, you weren't even limited to the same geographical area, or even the same state. Hell, after a while you weren't even limited to the same continent. People could come and go as they pleased, and if you were kicked from one server, it was easy to find a home somewhere else.

This further broke down once a new sub-culture began to form among denizens of the internet. Suddenly, we were a tiny individual in a massive world, completely insignificant, and we began to notice no matter what our actions were, they were completely without consequence. Instead of having a community like the days of yore, we instead became parasites, a generation bent on sucking up every last bit of fun from others for our own enjoyment, just like locusts in a swarm.

>> No.2356860

>>2356824
People still formed communities though. You just had to go out of your way a little more, it didn't happen as automatically.

I met people on Tribes and Descent Free Space servers that I still talk to. I met people in Ragnarok Online that I became actual friends with. I think it's more a case that online gaming became more like the real world and at least for me sort of coincided with growing up in general.

As a little kid, my friends were the other kids on my block. We all got along because we didn't have a ton of choice. I started going to school and most of the friends I made were the ones in my class. By the time highschool rolls around you're still making friends with the people around your age, but there are many more and most people gravitated towards groups of like minded people. By the time you're in and then done with university, your pool of friends is probably very diverse.

Online communities went kind of the same way, though for me at least they started later in life.

Not worth it with the amount of browns that join and can't speak English and people that can not take a critique at all.

I find it really depends on the game. There are games that encourage learning. I will give people tips in Monster Hunter when people ask and they're usually pretty appreciative. But I should note that I do usually wait to be asked or open with something like "can I show you something?"

Fighting games seem to be near the opposite though. On forums there are always people talking about technique and whatnot, but online even when you beat someone there's a good chance they'll call you a shitscrub. Those are the people I blare music over the mic at the next time I get matched with them.

Man, assuming you're the same person every time, you come off as extremely jaded. Out of curiosity, what kinds of games have you played that have made you develop this seemingly blanket dislike for people based on where they connect from or (as you seem to enjoy pointing out) what their skin color is?

Also, I find it interesting that when I play online with Russians, they'll often start out randomly calling me 'noob' until I demonstrate I can actually play, at which point they either stop or actually become friendly. They're probably just stupid shit kids, but I find it interesting that you can 'tame the beast', so to speak.

Back onto the topic at hand, there's still servers for old MMOs, like Ultima Online for example.

>> No.2361263

Red Orchestra 2 is a decent example of a modern game with a good community. Since its a more realistic WW2 game, most of the players are well over 20. A few kids play, and they are either shitheads who get banned, or are actually genuinely nice and want to learn, but at worst just have to be told to speak more quietly so their shrill child voices don't ruin anybody's ears.

I think good FPS games are pretty easy to find matches with, in regards to /vr/. Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein, Tribes, etc. The communities pretty much just keep on modding and living off the fact the games are great from the start, so interest is easier to keep.

Ultima still has shards running.

Think my first experience was WO. That was like 07 or 08. Wasn't anything negative nor was it widespread. Was just a "wow there's a group of people speaking Spanish on an American server for some reason". Never really saw that before then.

I didn't become negative about it till DOTA2. Those motherfuckers are just bad. Just god damn terrible.

A game like TF2 I can tell you is far easier to troll on the RU servers than it is the American servers.

Maybe someone can translate wtf "ctm" means? Maybe "rat"? I see that typed nonstop by the South Americans.

The American players aren't much better now and nobody takes criticism or tips. For example in DOTA2 I remember trying to explain to someone how the instances of damage works and how percentage can't just be added. At some point you just lose faith and troll away.
That kind of shit didn't happen when I was playing Unreal and Quake. At least not on the scale it does today. Even CS 1.6 and source was pretty good overall for learning new things. I don't really know when it went to shit.

And another note wtf happened to pub servers? I remember people didn't tell you to fuck off for playing too well. It's like modern players just want a hugbox for their server now.
