I absolutely like Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.

It does good things that have barely caught on with RPGs nowadays. In its simplicity, there is also elegance. It is a quintessential JRPG, pared down to the bare essentials - and in such it becomes a thing of beauty, like a cut gemstone.

Compared to the mess that Final Fantasy has become, it is all the more wonderful.

ET's only real problem is a lack of content. It tries to be an arcade game by repeating itself after the game ends, when it should have either switched to a space level or just ended the game right there. When you put the player through that much shit, you could at least give them closure.

But as an adventure game, it's pretty good for a tiny 2600 title. The method of positioning yourself around the screen to use your powers is a brilliant way of getting around the single fire button, and creates interesting gameplay scenarios.

Loved Robo Pit, I'd enjoy the hell out of the customization and the VS mode could get really intense.

Then Armored Core came out and I forgot about all about Robo Pit. Still, I loved it for those few months.

You're confused a little there, probably by the names of the games.

Tecmo Bowl: NES game
Tecmo Super Bowl: NES game (this is the popular one)
Tecmo Super Bowl II: SNES (and Genesis) game
Tecmo Super Bowl III: SNES (and Genesis) game

The first game, (ecmo Bowl, is the one no one likes (as much as Tecmo Super Bowl)

I love strategy rpgs, probably my favorite genre. The vast majority of people aren't into them though. I don't think it's a case of people IRL disliking it, i think it's just a case of people IRL never even hearing of it.

This. I've never owned a Virtual Boy, nor would I ever after trying one at a retrogaming con recently (they never came to EU, and wearing glasses/having to cross my eyes meant the 3d was painful), but playing this on an emulator minus the 3d is the bomb.

I LOVE how they pulled off crazy graphical effects and neat little setpieces (waterfalls! rivers you can fly in and out of!) in wireframe polygons, and the whole thing plays like if Descent had straightforward one way maps. Just as much ingenuity in here as classic Starfox. Ignore the the system, emulate this (and VB Wario Land while you're at it)

>> No.2357779

Descent wasn't wireframe, and you could tell what was a wall.

Red Alarm is exactly what its title advertised, though, and there are certainly worse games out there.

I played it at SoM just a couple weeks ago, both were underwhelming in the same aspects. Important events are just getting shoved aside to proceed with the plot or rather to just shove the party to the next area.

It's a shame honestly, both games radiate so much potential at many occasions but they ALWAYS fall flat and remain a shallow experience. Wish they would've fleshed out the events happening much more.

>Tales of Destiny

You and me are nigs. But at the same time I think it's less only us liking it and more only us playing it. I remember PSM magazine had a huge guide for it and it generally seemed to be well received at the time. I think it just got overshadowed by a lot of more high budget PS1 games. And honestly the worst criticism I ever see against it is that it didn't age so hot, which as much as I love the game is a pretty fair assessment

You don't see a lot of Tales talk for anything before Symphonia anyways though and for what it's worth people have nothing but good things to say about the PS2 remake of ToD, often calling it among the best the series has to offer.

Rutee is best Tales heroine.

It's also worth noting that for it's time a lot of care and attention went into it's translation. There are no real typos or grammar flubs. the dialogue flows naturally and felt pretty organic.

they did ditch the skits, which sucks but as I understand that would have been a technical nightmare to do. they where spoken dialogues with no speech boxes too so you'd have to either voice act them (which probably would have resulted in shitty actors) or sub title them which at the time probably wouldn't have sold to well for an already niche title. Kind of a lose lose situation really.

best OTP
