Bad Cops Edition

>What is SaGa?
It's a Jrpg series produced by Akitoshi Kawazu back in the early Final Fantasy days, however it differs from most other Jrpg series by being more Wrpg oriented, it's non-linear, with multiple main characters, multiple endings and very unusual mechanics based on classic Tabletop RPGs
>What are the games?
The first SaGa games are known in the west as Final Fantasy Legends, so chances are you played those in your childhood on ye olde brick GB, then there is the Romancing SaGa trilogy on the SNES, the two SaGa Frontier titles on the PS One and Minstrel Song(a remake of the first Romancing SaGa) and Unlimited: Saga on the PS2.
>What are the games I can play in English
All the FFL titles were localized, same with the PS One and PS2 titles, there is also an english patch for Romancing SaGa 3 but unfortunately the first two titles are still in Japanese only, though there are already translation projects in the works.

So, I've been reading bits and pieces of SaGa Frontier Essence lately, there's a lot of interesting stuff.

They even created an alphabet that was unfortunately used only in a few parts of the game, namely some shops, it's amazing how much content never made it in the game.

Another interesting bit of info.

Red was supposed to get different romantic endings with Yuria based on a special Affection parameter.

Also, DSC, known erroneously as Dream Super Combo in the western community actually stands for Dangerous Suplex Combo, which makes much more sense.

Well, compared the original there are quite a few rebalances in the meta, some bosses gained resistances, the most notable one being Ashura, the story is the same.

Compared to Frontier is however a bit archaic in some things, you don't spark techs, there are no LP or TP/JP, instead every weapon or magic/attack run on points, in some cases, like Monsters or Espers' abilities they can be refilled by sleeping in an Inn, weapons/taijutsu points are not restorable unless those weapons/techs are equipped by a mech, in which case their useage counter is halved, EACH TIME YOU EQUIP/UNEQUIP THOSE it's further halved though so be careful when you decide to roll a mech.
Magic is pretty standard and you can see it was still very FF-centric compared to Frontier, it's still the best way to deal with crowds of monsters and compared to later SaGa it is a good mean to deal damage.
Weapons work in the same way the do in Frontier except without techs/waza and they have limited uses, proficiencies are still there and work in the same way.
Races work mostly the same, Humans are good with anything, Espers are basically Mystics except they learn spells AND passive abilities, you can also change Esper type according to how you use them, if you act aggressively they'll change to attack type and learn more offensive magic for instance, mechs work exactly the same, monsters work kinda similar ecept that you can't select your ability set, it changes based on a wide range of factors, some abilities can be inherited by the next form you change to though, you might want to look up a FAQ for those.
Cure Items are actually useful this time around, but the inventory space is limited so keep an eye out for those.
The Muses work like the Gods from MinSon, they'll give you MP of you fight like they want/give them presents and even act as not so random summons.
The Goddesses of Destiny provide you with Threads of Fate which are used in Links, which are basically Frontier's combos.>Cont.

>>2343362
Unlike Frontier it's very easy to make money, and the shops actually have good items that cost quite a lot though.
As you progress in the game you'll get Relics that will give you either Map Abilities or boosts when equipped.
Map abilities are used to either explore environments, such as destroying walls, or nice extras like digging up treasures or see where enemies are in the map, they run on points though, you can restore those points at an Inn when they run out.
You can Chain encounters like MinSon, when two or more enemy avatars are near each other and you begin an encounter, you'll chain them, as such you'll fight ALL those enemies at the same time, which will usually mean a 4/5 party against 20 or more enemies, you'll NEED someone with magic or wide area weapons here or they'll overpower you, note that in dungeons this is very frequent and will tire your characters out pretty fast.
There isn't a BR, so you can grind to your heart's content.

Other than those I think there's nothing you need to know about basic mechanics.
Ashura might be bit tough for the first Story boss you meet so don't worry if he curbstomps you, it's pretty normal, just grind a bit, get good equipment and try again.

Also, go GiantDad once you get to the Giant world if you're having troubles with the game, it makes most of the mid game pretty easy, unless you're fighting against mages/slimes.

3R has a lot more things that I like more than 2R, like the fact that combos are not hampered by Threads of Fate and are much rebalanced, sparking techs and better stat growth, but there's still something in 2...I can't really tell what it is exactly, it feels more like a grand adventure even though it has much less plot setting than 3, must be the different worlds or the "gods", I still like it more even in the remakes though 3R is overall superior.

Final Fantasy Legend was both my first gameboy game and my first RPG (besides rogue, but that doesn't really count). I played it so much the first day I got it that when I tried to sleep all I could see were the sprites and all I could hear was that haunting theme song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHjWm1hEmn8

I came to compare every RPG to that game and sadly very few really stacked up to the amount of freedom you had in what kind of party to make. Having a monster constantly able to change forms was amazing as well. I found FFI when I finally got it, quite boring by comparison.

Also, the ending of that game! You finally reach the top of the tower and there's God congratulating you for overcoming his challenge, but you think the whole thing was such a dick move that you just murder him.

Also, you might be thinking of Crystal Chronicles. You should also check out the first one of that series since it's pretty great, especially the multiplayer even if it's sort of wack trying to get it to work since it requires using the gameboy advance to control characters in multiplayer. It really depends on how they're gonna handle most of the basic stuff, RomaSaGa and Frontier's Cast come from a game with non fixed stats so they'll have to work on it to make them balanced, unless of course Imperial will work with growing Stats, in that case that will screw up RomaSaGa2/3 and Frontier 2 cast.

It will be a tough cookie and there will be the usual problems of certain characters being much better than other at certain things but I trust they'll make it playable at the very least, formations and formation techs/magic seem to be in the game too so there will be a lot of stuff to tinker with, no doubt about that.

Just think of their moveset, both have the same Temptation skill albeit one confuses and the other one charms, both use Thunder magics and one weapon attack.

Character wise, both want people to adore them, well, maybe Rocbouquet doesn't really care much at the end of the day.
Venus was more of an all around egothistic bitch while Rocbouquet was more balanced as she was in love with Wagnas and did a lot of stuff out of love for him, just like Noel.

She attracts anything that belongs to the female gender due to Orlouge's blood, if I'm not mistaken even Princess Rei who grew up to be a rather powerful mystic comments on her charms, as well as Emilia.
Though the only canon gay girls for her are Gina and White Rose.
So yeah, I guess we can expect lots of fanservice.

Maybe we'll even get some neat features like Emperor's SaGa where certain characters get special dialogues, like making an all pirate squad with Hawke, hopefully Silver, Guella, Enrique and Black, or having Neidhart, Gerard, Mikhail, Gustave and Kelvin, that would be a nice touch.

>> No.2390706

>>2390694
>The stupid triceratops has everyone drunk and just one shots my people.
>Grail card quest
Ahhh that explains everything, the Grail Card is one of the trickiest quest in the game because of that drunk effect, it's pretty hard for everyone unless you know how to exploit the game and the later you do it the harder it becomes due to BR scaling enemies' types, the only safe way to not get your shit stomped too much is using an all mech team as they're the only one immune to that Drunk gimmick, and even then if you're at higher BR chances are you get a Kraken or two and get curbstomped by Maelstrom/Tentacle spam anyway.

Well, first things first, the stronger you get the stronger the enemies get, so since this is your first run in the game try to avoid grinding, certain bosses slap your shit anyway no matter how high or geared you are.
Your priorities should be sparking techs, learning good magics and getting good gear.
Now since you're on Blue's quest magic is not a problem since that's your main goal for 90% of his quest, I suggest you give him spells like Red Sands, Implosion, Psychic Prison is a must for a few key battles so keep it, maybe some light and shadow magic depending on our style and most importantly the Stasis Rune and Overdrive.
You'll get Overdrive after fighting Time Lord, Psychic Prison is a must here, DO NOT fight Time Lord without it or he'll go ZA WARUDO on your ass.
I'd suggest you to read some of the faqs I linked in the pastebin as it would get very long for me to explain all the things you should do in the meta, but to keep it short, Swords and Guns should be your main methods of inflicting damage, Magic is mainly for shenanigans in SaGa though the tarot's Tower spell in SF is known to be extremely devastating.
What you can do to cheese the game if you still find it too hard is using the Glirandly trick, there are tons of topics on Gamefaqs about that that will explain it better than I'll ever do in these posts.

Hm, oh well, as long as you don't expect anything more than that, but I must stress this again, don't expect much out of this, you'd be better off translating some more recent games, both DS and PSP have tons of titles that you could translate and get much more attention for than a SaGa title on SFC, Frontier Gate or any Summon Night for instance.

SaGa is super niche in the west and won't really get you much attention.
>>2396665
Well, there are a lot, I shouldn't really say this but if you can somehow create some competition in the Rom translation scene, like getting Gideon Zhi off his lazy ass to actually release shit at a decent pace, I think you'd get some recognition, though the only way to do that would be having someone who can code well enough and have some time on your hand.

as I said before, the most awaited release in these threads is Romancing SaGa 2, but it would be wise to make a general thread on /vr/ and ask which JP title people would like to play, the Tengai Makyou series is also sought after by a few people here.

Well, the community agrees on the GB SaGa or SaGa Frontier as the games best suited for beginners.

What I would personally suggest you to play though it's the first GB SaGa, there's a quite nice Wonderswan Port with a translation patch if you can't stand GB graphics.
It's a classic and will give you a very nice introduction to the series, from that you should continue on with the other two titles as they elaborate on the first one quite a bit, the DS remakes also add a few mechanics that will be introduced in the successive games, like Combos and Sparking, they're quite nice and again, if you feel the GB version to be too dated just play the DS remakes.
Once you finished with those Frontier is the next stop, though technically you should play the SNES trilogy first, but those games can be a bit hard to get into as the difficulty is all around higher compared to Frontier and there are less tricks you can use, but that's your call anyway.
After you finish with Frontier you should have a solid grasp of most fundamental mechanics so you can play the other games without worries, be warned that Romancing SaGa 2 is quite possibly the second hardest game in the series after Unlimited.
Oh, and do not underestimate Frontier, it might be the easiest title to get into but it still has tons of stuff that will rape beginners.

Come by if you have any question about the games, they're a bit hard to get into because of the lack of any tutorials or info, even the manuals don't really tell you all the stuff, but that's part of the adventure, finding out stuff on your own is a big part of the SaGa series.

I'd suggest you to put Romancing SaGa 2 last in your SNES order, it really is a bit too tough, lots of fun if you like non linear JRPG with job system/classes.

On PS2 there's Minstrel Song, which is a full Remake of the first Romancing SaGa, lots of stuff changed and there are a hell of a lot more mechanics added and tons of stuff to do, great music as well.
Unlimited is the black sheep of the series as it let go of a lot of conventions for a more tabletop-like gameplay and even more complexity in general mechanics, it's a great game if you have time and energies to invest into it, but it's definitely not for everyone, a lot of unusual mechanics like HP working differently form any other game and extreme focus on micro and macro management makes it really, really hard to get into, if you do though you'll burn hundreds of hours into it, think of it as the Wizardry 4 of SaGa, great game, but with a big "PLEBS&CASUALS KEEP OUT" stamp on it.
Also, here's a little Webm from Minstrel Song for you.

Cody is rather dependable so I wouldn't see why he could have problems with sending her to get informations, I personally thought it would be a good idea to send Tyler for that, but it all boils down to the fact that you're supposed to play as Wil so you can have a degree of freedom in what you do.

Gerard in Romancing SaGa 2 can also be a real asshole if you choose to, even if it's not really in his character, same with most playable characters in SaGa, you can also do the contrary, Grey is supposed to be kind of an asshole but you can make him a good guy if you want to.
I mean, it's all freedom of choice in how you can develop certain characters and shape their stories, it's not bad at all in my eyes, though I admit there are a few problems but the only way to make certain choices more plausible would be to have "empty" characters with no personality at all.

I was sort of thinking of putting a tablet/dumpslot on MR, with Blender on TR and Kick/Throw on TL and ML

Fortune lvl 5 on BL and lvl 4 on BR with some luck

Yeah, it shows.

I mean, I guess you wanted to make Ruby a muscle wizard or something but remember that she is a lightweight character oriented for magic and speed, she isn't going to be superduper strong like Musol Yani unless you bother sparking all the top tier waza.
What>>2424205 says it's true, axes are universally easy to fit in all characters and hit like a truck, there's even a general Axe setup that goes well for nearly all characters, except maybe Anzam, but he's kind of a weird character anyway.
If you don't like axes consider specializing Ruby in daggers, she's kinda good with those due to her panel layout so she can become a good thief mage or something, daggers also have some quite nifty effects that would be very good for lightweight, speedy characters like her, regarding magic, I guess Fire and Metal could be a good choice for her though I don't remember exactly how her panel layout is so I might be wrong.
Also, are you on her quest? 'cause if you are you don't really need to bother making her extremely strong since you have Iskandar and Grace anyway, those two will probably BTFO of everything without even an optimal setup, well, maybe Grace does need some careful planning but she's so strong once you get her in gear...
Check the Panel FAQ if you still have doubts, it's really super detailed and will help you a lot.

I'm gonna make her a fire mage, and it really isn't that much of a mess. That level 4 axe panel is just a random panel dump. Seal panel actually boosts all her stats a lot without sacrificing much element. Magic Tablets and Blender take a while to get rolling no matter what you do.

I already have Hiro on Axes (because his stats are actually good for it) and Iskendar on Swords/Water magic and Sapphire as a perfectly good thief.

Well, you can grind Tablets rather easily in the Deities' Table iirc, those Mirror Shards enemies have a high chance of dropping a tablet, the Mural Paintings side quest also has some nice Tablet drops but you can't abuse unlimited turns and Tetraforce like any Seven Wonder quest, Magic Blender will have to wait though.

You obviously should when you get the chance
> Haven't grasped the whole weapon system yet.
Basically, each weapon works separately from the others, all your proficiencies and waza are bound to that single weapon instead of being a general attribute of your character, it kinda sucks because it makes the game super clunky especially in the long run when you'll get quite a few good weapons but they'll have a low level so you'll need to genocide tons of monsters to unlock their potential, that's SFC RomaSaGa's weapon system for you.
It's puzzling, on one hand as long as you can kill monsters before they kill you you won't exactly need to upgrade your equipment at the same pace of the other games, on the other hand it's also true that switching frequently kinda gives you the edge over the toughest opponents due to superior base stats though that means you have to fight a lot of stuff frequently.

Unless you're willing to look up an FAQ 24/7, the process of using monsters is:

Eat meat until you get something good (Boss meat are especially good for this)

And this is the part where people somehow don't figure out but once you get a form you're satisfied with, DON'T EAT THE DAMN MEAT until you're certain the monster is really falling behind.

>is there a way to make them return to black?
Afaik you should concentrate on rebuilding a good capital so they should become active again.

Though if I may suggest you a strategy, don't ask for support at all when you're doing the market stock minigame, it's the fastest way to make it unwinnable, the thing you should do to get a smooth victory is buying all the smallest businesses first in order to build capital, I'm talking about all those little things like mining companies, lumberjacks and hotels that cost little to nothing, once you amass them all you should have a stable enough capital to buy mid sized businesses like a few guilds, manufacturers and transport societies, once you get all those you can try to build up enough capital to buy the bigger enterprises like the ship guilds in Vanguard or the jewel makers in Podol which will make you rich as fuck in the long run, though for things like the Naju tribe businesses you'll have to be careful as you'll need to bet billions and billions to barely stay afloat. Once you get a lot of companies working for you you should have enormous capital you can spend on buying bigger companies and also a great revenue that will give you solid income to restore the capital you spent on buying big companies, you shouldn't ask for help from your companies as you're literally selling off a part of them every time you do so, the only feasible option would be to ask help from the Claudius family business as they give a lot of money and will probably never run out of it, considering they're the ones backing you up.

Also, one other thing, I'm not sure whether you noticed but your capital increases even when you lose a bid, you might want to do this periodically, just bid against someone you know you'll never be able to buy and leave the bid immediately, you'll still amass capital, be careful though, you can't do this when somebody else is trying to buy something for you, those are the bids you should NEVER lose.

Also I noticed that there's nothing about mystics stat change in pastebin so I have to elaborate:
Mystics can steal attacks from enemies. Different attacks gives you different stats. To get attack, you must use this tech as last hit that will finish the enemy. Note that what you get is random so it will take several tries to get what you want (sometimes you get nothing). You can see pic for example of stealing and stats changing.

Good looking, nice music tools and has a great game system, it's one of the prettiest turn based JRPG on the Famicom and given its sandbox-y nature it's perfect for mods.
Also, some things, like poses are more standardized compared to 2 so they're much easier to make, in 2 literally every playable character has his very own set of poses for anything.

I think my only issue with aabeta other than the increased difficulty (which you can patch out) is that all the new quests makes the game take way way way longer to complete and they're so interconnected that you can't say "well, I'm skipping this one this playthrough" without knowing which 4-5 other quests it's going to lock you out of.

I'm not playing it in fact, I tried it months ago because I was intrigued by the new sprites for the characters and then I found out all the clusterfuck, I was just ranting.
Some things are nice though, like the fact that you could get a lot of characters from all the series, there's a neat tool for sprite editing and all that jazz, it's just the changes to the core gameplay that I don't like but it's more because there's too much stuff cramped in without much planning for me and a lot of those decisions are a bit questionable, but yeah at the end of the day I'm nitpicking, the patches are objectively amazing considering all the stuff they did and it's a SFC game on top of it.

I personally wasn't too fond of the chessboard exploration though, and Reels where a bit excessive at times.
MinSon is great but I'm not too fond of the Stat Growth system, I prefer "fixed" stats personally, also some redesigns aren't really as good as the original ones for me, still a great game in a lot of ways and one of my favorite JRPGs on the PS2.

Each stun will make you run around him, iirc you can win the fight just by stunning him 4 times, though it's not as satisfying as kicking its ass the hard way.

Problem is I didn't know that you had to stun him to do that, worst thing is you can also get petrified and if your dedicated healers get KO'd there's not much you can do since it just has too much defense and it can also combo his attacks, if it does that unless you're in really good shape it's one character down for each combo, I tried to endure the damage and chip its health away but in the end I got rekt.
Though it can be perfectly beatable by the time you get to it if you're prepared.

Most of the basic SaGa mechanics like leveling stats and proficiencies instead of character levels, character races, focus on formations, sparking skills, magic and having a huge cast of characters with different innate talents is in there.

Hell, most of the Magic, Techs in the games are exactly the same as in SaGa, things like Overdrive, Galaxy, Reverse Delta, Dragon's Tail, they are the exact same as the SaGa counterpart, some formations are also nearly identical and some characters like the Enlightened Seven are obviously referencing SaGa games.

I personally don't dig Simulacrum much so I usually end up with 2 maxed Castle Knights for max guard chances and heavy physical attacks and two maxed Rosalian Mages for Overdrive/Phantom Warrior spamming, it usually works but if Saruin decides to be a dick and spam Deus Ex Machina things might get a bit rough.

If you do something wrong during the Cumberland Civil War, you will be locked out of the Holy Order Class.

If you break down the gate even after saving Cat, you can't get the City Thief Class.

If you kill the lead monster instead of letting the Monk kill it, you will be locked out of the Monk Class.

If you let the Volcano Erupt, you can get the Grimoire for Shadow Magic, but are locked out of the Salamander Class.

If you use the Helicopter to fight Wagnas, you will be locked out of getting the Iris' and you may not be able to access Astaroth (Ancients City)

These are the conditions I know of to lose potential character classes.

It should show up after at least a generation and some battles in the generation after you gave the funds iirc.
>Is there any tactics for battles other than "spam most powerful moves and hope you have enough WP items"?
I usually make a party that's balanced around a WP whore heavy hitter like a Monk/Imperial Guard, a dedicated offensive mage Court Mage/Tactician, a healer Holy Order/Nereid, fast gimmick character for support damage/Status and buffs like a Thief/Nomad and the current Emperor which is basically good at anything given the stats you get through the generations shift.
You should also try to equip yourself accordingly to the big bad you're going to face, getting thunder resistances for Rocbouquet or the Somon Ring if you have males in your party helps a lot against her, having fast characters with water resistances and Fire Wall helps against Subier, Noel can be hard countered with Light Sword and Fire Wall and so on, the only bosses that are really balls to the wall hard are probably Wagnas because even if you have Fire Wall Psycho Bind will rape you and if he's in his second form and decides to spam it two times per turn he can still wipe you out, Hive Queen because she's goddamn strong and can petrify and Dantarg because Grand Slam will always fuck you up.

>Do buff spells really provide a huge numerical improvement?
Some of them do, though I was maily referring to buffs in terms of shields or additional effects like Fire Wall.
Missile Guard increases your defense against Pierce damage by quite a bit, Golden Strength is also nice and stacks so two or three Golden Strength on a Monk can give you some nice damage boost, the best stat buff there is is Dragon Pulse but you get it late in the game and it disappears after one turn, but if you combine it with the Amethyst Axe's built in Waza you can cheese the Seven Heroes no problem as Dragon Pulse doesn't disappear on shadow clones until they disappear.
>Also how do you see the resistances etc for your equipment?
You don't
>Does different pieces have different advantages
Of course, the numbers you see are the basic Defense stat multiplier but the game doesn't tell you what defense type those piece of armors have, as in Pierce/Blunt/Slash resistances, like all the other SaGa games of course.
The problem with RS2 is that here the damage type multipliers are way more prominent compared to other games, I'm sure you've been wondering why Tentacle attacks are so bloody strong (though that's mostly because of a glitched multiplier afaik), that's why having a piece of equipment with lesser stats most of the times is much better than having the top tier armor you can get otherwise all your guys should wear Full Plates.
Iirc, vests/hats/boots are good against slashing/pierce and armors/plates/helms/guards are good against blunt/pierce damage but you should really check a wiki for those as there's so much equipment pieces I can't remember exactly which one has which defense type.
The same thing is true for shields, Big Shields seem better because of the high defense stat boost, but Small Shield are better because they cancel any kind of damage if they're activated whereas Big Shields activate more often but only reduce damage.

Shit, I kind of figured this was the case when I went from "my guys are getting one shot" to "really sustainable even with just 1 healer". Guess the English FAQs available doesn't have such information though

You can enjoy the FF shovelware title n.20930 though.

At least there's a new NieR in the works, Star Ocean 5 and apparently a new JRPG title.

Finished Muse's quest on the Thomas Master Magician run.
Goddamn she's a pain in the ass to train, at least Sharl is super strong even as you get him, now I just have to get Fullbright and the full team will be ready.

Nope. There's some funny tweets about people wanting to play though.

I'm Gaijin filth too though.

So far the game will have an exploration system similar to Grnad Knights Chronicle, you move your character through a map with checkpoints and there will be some other avatars with whom you can interact, enemies and such.
Battle System is classic SaGa though WP and JP seem to be fused into SP, classic formations are back too.
There is a city management feature like RomaSaGa 2 where you use facilities to get stuff like items, characters and so on.
Game also has a huge inbuilt wiki feature that explains all the mechanics but it would take a while to translate all that stuff and I don't think my meager Jap skills can do that efficiently.
http://www.imperialsaga.jp/help/home.php
There will also be the possibility to buy items with real money.

There's a lot of stuff to talk about really and I still haven't read even half of it, the game looks good on paper though.

So far the playable characters are.

RomaSaGa:Albert, Jamil, Grey, Hawke, Aisha, Claudia, Sif, Barbara
RomaSaGa2:Gerald, Leon, James, Therese, Bear, Hector, Cat, Coppelia
RomaSaGa3:Julian, Ellen, Monica, Harid, Katarina, Sara, Mikhail, Thomas

It seems we'll eventally get characters from every SaGa game ever made though

You have a lot of freedom in the game as its almost entirely made up of side quests as opposed to just following from plot point A to B.

The game has incredibly complex mechanics where you can fuck yourself over if you aren't paying attention (play with a guide in this regard), and it also has battle rank which helps to drive the growth mechanics, similar to SaGa Frontier, except that its a visible entity in TLR.

Also its hard as fuck.

>> No.2479641

>>2479627
You know how RomaSaGa3 Commander mode works?
It's a refined version of that.

If you like that kind of system Last Remnant is a blast, if you don't, eh, you might not find it so hot.
It also lacks most of the SaGa style in terms of flashy combos, but it's a great game in its own right and the replay value is very high, the characters aren't bad either and the story is decent, the VA is also pretty good in both languages and the graphics are nice.

The gameplay is as deep as you might expect from a SaGa game, LOTS of stuff to explore and experiment with, great variety in how to approach a fight, huge cast.

It's seriously a great game, but again, if you aren't into RomaSaGa 3 commander mode it might feel a bit weird, do try it though.
