I think his name is usually Vanderdecken in most stories. Some stories and poems use a different name or mistakenly use the name of his ship for his own name.

Guys, localisation.
It was Eggman in Japan and Robotnik in the West. Then when Sonic Adventure happened they called him Eggman internationally but the plot pointed out that Eggman is a nickname Sonic and his pals use, while his birth surname is Robotnik. This is further solidified in Sonic Adventure 2 when his grandfather is said to be called Gerald Robotnik.
All in all it was Sonic Team trying to tie a discrepance the localisation did but it's not really important how you call him. He was supposed to be kind of a goofy character in the first games and got some serious tones as the lore expanded and that's why in the beginning it didn't really matter what his ID card had printed, but more which name could appeal the different audiences better.

I agree for the most part, but just two things:

They never mention "Robotnik" in the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure. He still calls himself "Dr. Eggman" there; Robotnik was added in the American version, and it wasn't until SA2 that Japan decided to use it.

And also - I almost feel that as the lore expanded, he became less serious. He's often presented as something of a goofy, bumbling comic relief villain, relies on outside forces (Chaos, Shadow, Dark Gaia) to do his work, or gets betrayed by his own creations (Metal Sonic, Gemerl). Compared to the old games, where he'd just chuckle a bit, and was always the final boss, in control until the end. This is disregarding cartoons/comics, of course, where he could be all over the place.

Besides that, most of what you got is right. Not that people won't stop arguing. It's fun.

Also, fun non-vr fact: according to the Sonic Heroes manual, Dr. Eggman Robotnik identifies as a feminist.

Huh. I have the game and read his bio in the manual and completely forgot about it. I did take note of his IQ being 100.

This also kind of reflects on his counterpart in Eggman Nega. In which he doesn't share the same sentiments of Dr. Eggman but also has the same goal in mind.

Also, on that note I am reminded of the old Dr. Eggman's quote when referred to as "Dr. Robotnik" by Tails. I used to think that was evidence of Sonic Team disregarding the moniker "Dr. Robotnik," but came to realize that it was old Dr. Eggman saying it and actually reflects the history of the old Sonic era games. In which he was called "Dr. Robotnik" in the west, but as time went on even here in games for the Saturn in which Dr. Robotnik was being called "Eggman." I remember one such instance in "Nights into Dreams" where Sonic characters were the record holders for best time and "Eggman" was registered instead of "Dr. Robotnik." This was the first time I was introduced to the name "Eggma" (I had never noticed it in Sonic 2 on the Flying Fortress).

So. Comics and cartoons. He was always Robotnik in those western productions. So why all the egg jokes? There have always been egg jokes even when using designs that don't look eggy in the slightest. I don't get it.

I didn't know that about Sonic Adventure in Japan.
And about the goofyness maybe he never stopped being a clown. Even if they don't speak on the Mega Drive you can tell by his way of getting mad or when he runs he's quite comical, while Sonic with his speed-face is the edgy cool one. And I think that's what made Robotnik likeable. See, when you were a kid in control of the cool hedgehog that clown would really give you trouble and do horrible things (like transforming animals into robots) while still being a goofy character. And you, as the cool guy on the block, could not allow it. That gets epic in Sonic3&k with all the Master Emerald stuff and while you were focused on the epicness, the goofyness was still there:the Death Egg (obvious humoristic reference), the final boss who's like a mecha Eggman... I mean, up until the end he tries so hard and does not lose his comic relief caracteristic stuff. I think that because of all this, later, one of the parts I liked more about Sonic Adventure was when Perfect Chaos goes out of control and Robotnik appears with a "second Egg Carrier that he built just in case" only to get destroyed the second after.
Without Robotnik, Sonic would be shit because Robotnik is the character that's more self aware about all the lack of seriosness in the series. By lack of seriousness I mean, again, all the shameless inspirations in Star Wars, Dragon Ball (7 Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic), Laputa the Castle in the Sky (Angel Island), and I'm pretty sure there are many more.

When I was a kid my friends and I had two theories about Sonic that Im not sure how we got in our head but we always assumed to be true. One was that Eggman in the newer Sonic games is the grandson of Robotnik. The second was that Robotnik actually CREATED Sonic and Tails.
