It goes to show you how advertising has changed over the years. Back then, people read advertisements and they expected readers to do so. Now they just want that one snappy image, a bright color or an easily translatable visual. I cant imagine sitting down in "the day" and reading that unless I already had an interest in it. I guess everyone's attention span has changed.

I dont know, sir. Its not just this style of advertisement where I have seen items sold in this manner. Look at the Atari photo in OP's picture for example. It isnt a paragraph or done in an article style, but thats still alot more words than you may find now adays.

It seems to me its more about the visuals these days. That isnt to say its a bad thing. Just the way we view things and react to them has changed. We are a faster generation. Instant gratification, capture the moment in one image type of thinking.

It seems advertisement changed once the 90s came around.

that was also the box art for ultima 2, which I no longer have, unfortunately

ultima 2 was an interesting one, because while it wasn't really a great 'game' it was an amazing sandbox (like all ultimas) and it was definitely a direct inspiration for chrono trigger

even the 5 time periods are roughly the same, though ultima has "Legends" instead of CT's floating-castle 'glory of magic' age

I doubt you will. You'd get discouraged rather soon, if not very soon. You'd have far better prospects just doing a few original scans, particularly for more unusual stuff, like PCE or amiga CD32, at least that way you don't have to worry about if you've got the best quality out there or if you metadata had gotten mixed up one way or another.

how exactly have "game makers gone through some tough times" in 1996? I don't remember that being a thing, except for maybe sega, but weren't those other companies they mentioned doing more than fine? >Why would anyone think that's anything but retarded?
>Are the 90s really that lost on me?

Yes
Back in the 90's we were all about new and ingenious ideas without thinking about how inconvenient or impractical they could be.

Take the virtual boy for example. You had to stick your head into a shitty visor. Was it comfortable? No. Was it practical? Oh hell no. But it made it to the market because it was a new thing.

Some of these ideas actually made it to market and were quite successful once we perfected the tech a little more and the games were built around using the controller, like the Wiimote for example. When you have a game built for a controller and you try to shoehorn motion controls, it's the recipe for disaster.

Some tech, however, like virtual reality, still has yet to become mainstream. I remember in the 90's virtual reality was the next big thing and everyone was sure it would be mainstream within years. Then we saw the tech wasn't there yet and we settled for first person shooters on a screen

1. Because the actual product (the video-game) is less visually impressive than modern games, where you can just use a screenshot of gameplay or a pre-rendered cut-scene.
