I had two PlaySega! USB saturn controllers for a while, and was very happy with them. From my reading they were on the high-end of inexpensive Saturn usb's (with SLS being the "high end" of expensive Saturn usb pads).

However, recently, I am having a lot of malfunctions with their dpads. Often one of the directions stops working completely.

Now, I've opened them up, did a light cleaning and reset the little rubber thingies, which usually make it work for a while before clonking out again. This is frustrating because when I manipulate the pad itself with the rubber connectors, they function fine - it's only when I close the shell. Anyone have any ideas?

If not I might end up buying some type of Hori pad or a Wii Classic Controller Pro.

For retro game without analog sticks, accept no substitutes.

>Virtually identical to SNES
>No need for any special cables or converters.
>Brand new so no deterioration yet!

Arguably a new-quality original SNES controller with a USB cross-over would be better, but these days the vast majority of those controllers that are in circulation have taken some serious abuse. If you're just buying a controller for emulation/ retro style games then there's really no point in buying an ogSNES controller anymore.

If it was a case of "Well if you can't get an SNES controller, get an iBuffalo" then yeah, he'd be right. But a brand new controller costs only a couple bucks more than an adapter, so I'm honestly saying it's a superior choice for someone shopping around.

Dualshock 3. It's truly wonderful. Still working flawlessly after all these years thanks to all the time and money put into developing it, something you won't see in almost any third party controller. That's the only real problem with third party stuff. They can be comfy, they can come with features, but somehow there's always a build quality issue (doesn't last long, made of cheap crap, or both) because they just don't have the funding.

I've heard the DS4 is even better, but I'm not gonna go out and pay for the difference unless my DS3 starts falling apart.

I like the Xbox controller's general size and shape and the Gamecube's octagonal analog stick, but overall they're not really as nice. I can also understand how people would want to play older games with older controllers, but I'm glad those shitty, old, stiff controllers are gone. It feels way nicer to use a modern pad and buttons even with games from the 80s.

The only thing I really wish my DS3 was better at is playing N64 games just because the N64 controller was weird and nonstandard as fuck. I guess the Sega consoles kinda face that same six-button problem, but I was never a Sega person.

>Logitech F510
Includes Rumble AND is wired but not sold in USA anymore. The D-Pad is nice but the trigger buttons are fucking stubborn and cramp my fingers in racing games that don't use binary accelation. Thumb sticks are alright.

>Saitek P2500
Dpad is amazing and comfortable for fighting games. For some reason in Windows 7 no game registers any kind of input from the right analog stick when on Windows XP it used to register everything perfectly. The sticks are not bad but it might be something to do with the deadzone that it overthrows some movements sometimes.

>Sony DualShock 2
Got 6 of these babies and feel a lot heavier than DualShock 3 controllers. D-Pads set the standard for me and Analog sticks have perfect deadzones considering how old they are.

>Sony DualShock 3
This is what I use today and I have 4 of these. Better DS3 tool makes the controller versatile since it converts it into a DirectInput, XInput, KB+Mouse and for some reason has a PCSX2 setting. Pretty much the same as DualShock 2 except it's wireless. I recomment using the USB option if playing on PC unless you don't mind recharging at potentially inconvenient times.

>Mad Catz FightPad S.D.
A MAJOR improvement of it's predecessor when it comes to ergonomics. These where made with fighting games in mind so they are not as platformer friendly as they seem or for any game that has a heavy emphasis on horizontal gameplay. D-Pad makes it really easy to execute 360 rotation movements and buttons have nice spacing so you don't press anything by accident. Plays best with Fighting/MAME games when you lay the right side on your lap while holding D-Pad side with other hand[no duh].

>Nvidia Shield Portable [built-in]
D-Pad is comfortable enough for everything BUT fighting games. Convex buttons are nice actually. Sticks, specially for PS1 and PSP emulation, feel awesome. Now I know why Xbox controller users prefer the concave style sticks but the DualShock standard placement is perfectly fine.

As an outsider who hasn't been a part of the argument, I think this is all a misunderstanding.

When people say "it is a substitute", I think they're saying it relative to an actual SNES controller. In that case, yes it is. And that's what he immediately seems to be implying. But technically, he doesn't actually specify that, so what he meant was likely "accept no substitutes to this particular (third party) controller," (because) "it's almost the same and yet needs no special cables or converters, as well as being brand new, making it superior."

Maybe I'm just being way too generous here because I interpreted it the other way too at first.

>SteelSeries 3GC
It's the equivalent of a Saitek P2500 except a different D-Pad shape and slightly better analog sticks when it comes to movement in 3D games. I don't mess with the turbo mode in these controllers because I've had bad experiences with forgetting I have it on and fucking up settings in menus so no comment on that.

>SteelSeries Free
[not to be confused with the SteelSeries Stratus which I have no experience using]
Not a terrible little controller which I gave away a long time ago. D-Pad can be better. Analog sticks work as intended but have not tried using it in 3D games emulated and native. This entire controller falls under the `it's better than nothing' category when it comes to Android. I remember there was a PC software that would let you change settings but I cannot remember what.

>Nyko Playpad
Got it for my dad since it's cheap and he looses stuff sometimes. Last time I used it the inputs were decent enough. Newer equivalent of SteelSeries Free except analog stick placement and way better D-pad. Can't comment further on it since I only tested it when I set it up.

>Nyko Playpad Pro
They are also cheap and bought 4 of these back before Nvidia released their stand-alone Shield controller. These are amazing for Android gaming even though it took me a while to get used to stick placement. RetroArch picks them up nicely when you set the controllers to EMU. Back when I used these there were no multiplayer-on-single-device android games that I knew of so can't say for sure how good they are for that.

>Nvidia Shield Controller [Stand-alone]
This is pretty much the perfected version of the Portable's build-in controller. Having 4 of these is essential now that Nvidia Grid supports 4 players. A bar below the DualShock family of controllers because of D-Pad but the concave analogs beat the DualShock convex analogs by so much.

All of these controllers work on PC.

Does anybody have any experience with the MOGA controller family?

Functionally DS4 is the best controller, but its construction feels slightly shoddy. Interested to see how it fares in durability.

The high regard for DS3 in that graphic is off-base. Just like any Dualshock prior, you need little nip/girl hands to appreciate it.

They have a "floating" d-pad, which is a matter of personal taste. Also, the analog triggers on the Xinput-style pads are strange - it feels like their hinge is in the wrong plane. You need to push downwards (rather than just squeezing) to move them.

(On the plus side, you can crack an Xbox 360 so that it recognizes the Logitech controllers, despite not having the Microsoft-required crypto.)

Hey /vr/, I have a question that doesn't deserve it's own thread.

I recently bought a dualshock2 + adapter online and I noticed that some buttons don't work (up, left, left triggers...). Upon closer inspection, I noticed that pin number 8 is missing.

Shop claims to test everything they sell (it's second-hand), they are full of shit right? Is this the behavior you would expect from that pin missing or is there a chance it might still be a software problem?

>> No.2356307

>>2356280

Both my Dualshock 2 and the PS1 DS don't have the 8th pin, and they all work normally on the PS1/2 and on the PC through the adapter. The first time I saw the pin was missing was when the pad fells on the ground, I thought it was broken but then I realized it was normal. Maybe your problem is with the controller itself, one of my old DS died and when I opened it up I saw a broken wire inside.

>> No.2356328

>>2356307

Thanks, that helped. The controller was sent to me with the cord violently wound around it, and some googling revealed that that can damage the wire, especially if it's old.

The wire damage theory would be consistent with the buttons not working, since they are the ones that go first with damaged wire (up on the d-pad, other buttons on the left side).

Will try to screw around with the drivers before I demand a refund and probably buy myself a brand new dualshock2.

I am currently using two of these for emulation. They have been working perfectly, no buttons are broken, and they were really cheap. They are actually PS2 controllers but have a usb connector as well. One problem i had was that on the back of the controller is a turbo switch (starts spamming Start when you push it) and you'd end up accidently pushing the button when playing. I solved that by sanding down the turbo buttons, now you don't accidentally hit them while playing any more. On one of the controllers, one analog stick is slightly off-centered and tilted to one side, but still works flawlessly. The D-pad is okay, not god-tier, if you're not used to the controller you may end up going up-right or up-left when you are trying to go just up, for example. But it's not the worst dpad i've used to be honest. Really a good gamepad for the price, would recommend it.

I use this. Bought it long ago. Lost it for awhile, then recently found it a few months ago.

It has quite possibly the worst d-pad I've ever used in my life, worse than the 360 pad. But, it works completely fine and I'm too cheap to buy a new controller anytime soon so this will have to do. Analog sticks work good for PS2 emulation and that's what I often play anyway.

Most games either use exactly or less than the controls the dual shock has. I have a dual shock adapter and controllers but since the ds1 is hard and the ds2 has analog face buttons that require deep pressing to register I've since adopted the wii classic pro with two port adapter for USB. It has good button action and dpad and works pretty much perfectly for most things, I'd prefer a better quality analog sticks but it's still on par with the dual shock 1 & 2. Not many controllers have great sticks, most are merely adequate.

>DualShock d-pad design
Like with every d-pad, you need to get accustomed to its quirks before being comfortable with it.

That said, as a person who plays d-pad intensive games and expects reliability, I'm not satisfied with a DS3 version of the DualShock d-pads.

The reason for that is how inconsistent is its floaty design. As you might know the d-pad in question is actually a molded pad that slides around where it's placed, and it is NOT properly fitted for the controller nor is it fixed in place. That causes a number of annoyances, but most importantly stiffness and an inconsistent feel to the d-pad. Sometimes you will feel a click after each press, sometimes you won't, but the worst situation is when the previously mentioned stiffness occurs due to the plastic pad moving closer to the side.

The DS1 d-pad seems to be different in that regard, but the design is awfully similar, so I would expect similar issues.

Avoid DualShock style d-pads.

I bought into the hype and got one a while back.

If you want to play with an on-screen cursor, it's pretty decent. More responsive than a Wiimote. It's very slightly better than the EMS topgun in terms of sensing, but the recoil and cheaper price of the EMS make it a far better choice for the casual gamer.

If you have any interest in any kind of real fun or accuracy, the only choice is a CRT solution. Using an aimtrak without a cursor is one of the most painful experiences in gaming, it's ridiculously slow and only works when you can adjust for the delay. Because the entire market has abandoned CRTs, and most mame kiddies, it's quite a hassle to get working guns for PC these days. Documentation is incredibly sparse, you just stick shit together and hope it holds together with legacy drivers.

It feels a lot more solid but unfortunately doesn't have enough buttons for SNES despite appearing to have been made for it. The middle 'button' isn't even a control button of any kind.
