It's one of those PC games you just have to play. It's a must have. Being a PC gamer and not playing SS2 or Deus Ex is like owning a NES without Mario and Contra.

>> No.2332408

>>2332402
ok, i never played old school ego shooter, like doom or something, so the convulted maps od SS1 felt pretty interesting to me.
as for the atmosphere, i am willing to say, that it can/may depend on wich game you played first. i played ss1 first, a few years ago, and had a blast. ss2 didn't have so many NEW atmosphere elements for me after that. though it had more elements for building atmosphere, i guess.
that dos game felt really lonely and threateneing, and i genuinely felt mocked/scorned by showdown. like breaking the 4th wall levels, of mockery.
like when you execute the mission objectives of level two in the wrong order, and shaudown thanks you for doing in her favour before you see the game over screen.
or when you try opening a locked door/terminal, and a green, poisonous apearing image of shodun appears. on screen without any comment, other than
>the door is locked
and you think you have seen a grin on her face for a short moment, and get goosebumps because that image sort of cought you off guard, even though you saw it the third time.

god, i love that unplayable mess of a game!

Agreed, save that i prefer SS1 for everything. Including the cumbersome lack of mouselook.

SS2 is an awesome, amazing game. It stands head an shoulders above it's peers, but it's not as unique and creative as the first game.

>> No.2333368

>>2333280
Playing SS2 and reading the background story has been inspiring me to pick up the first one and play it. I am a little intimidated by the lack of mouse look. Tried playing my uncles Doom on his PC when I was pretty young and found it frustrating to say the least. Back then I couldn't even beat games I find a breeze now though. But I digress, how hard is it to adapt to not using a mouse when you've gotten so used to one?

>> No.2333382

>>2333368
It's a little different, especially because it's not like Doom where you shoot just where you're pointing; the on-screen interface is pretty integral part of the gameplay, so you're steering with WSAD and using a mouse pointer to open data logs, interact with objects, and aim/shoot. I really love the control scheme, learning and mastering it was fun in and of itself for me, but it's understandable that some people can't get into it.

But there's a mouselook mod packaged with SSP so you don't need to worry about it if you don't want to.

I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Just read the little reference card that comes with SSP and use whatever keys you're the most comfortable with. No need for that mouselook mod. Personally i constantly use ASD, not even XZ and C, so I pretty much play the game with tank controls. It works really well though.

I've read some tiny hints of what is and isn't essential in character progression and so on.

I felt somewhat disappointed by SS2, and SS1 is in my top 5 favorite games. I felt that there was too much stress placed on becoming a living god through cybermodules and not enough on tight, compact, and well-designed levels.

Google System Shock portable. It's a packaged DOSBox version with an optional mouselook mod

I've been playing SS2 lately for the first time in years, but this time with enhanced graphics etc. Space looks great in HD, and the early game crew quarters look very comfy.

Also, the game became much more enjoyable when I stopped thinking it as shooter and started to think it as adventure game instead.
