Looks good so far. Just keep the control panel reasonable in terms of buttons/joysticks and don't give it some hokey looking decals. The decorating can be tricky. My choice would be to probably keep it plain black and maybe give it some colored highlights or similar. Maybe look at the (non-retro) Vewlix for ideas to decorate a cab without making it game-specific.

That type of stool is what every bathroom in Australia had growing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s. At the time they won design awards and were the largest single injection molded item ever made. They were manufactured by Caroma in South Australia. They are 2-piece, so you can pull them apart, the end-caps also come off to allow storage of stuff (like lego!).

In the 80s, they became the stool of choice for milk-bars and arcades because they were cheap, rugged, and readily available.

Nowadays they are a bit harder to come across, although there is a steady supplying coming through eBay at the moment. I have 2 stools, and I think they cost me $30-$40 each!

They really add to the authenticity of the experience when using my cocktail cabinet.

Okay, thinking about building a NES cabinet, here's my plan:

The brain: Acer Aspire One with Tiny7. It's a shit computer, but it runs NES emus and boots realllly fast, and I've set it up that the first thing it does is runs a batch script so I get a custom NES-ish ROM selector.
The screen: A bigass CRT hooked to the laptop's VGA port
The controls: Two NES Advantages attached to the deck, hooked to the laptop's USB port with a NES->USB dongle
Sounds: Some speakers I guess
The shell: Fuck, I dunno. I've got a woodworking friend who could probably make one for me if I provide the plans (I have 3D modeling background, I guess I could do that), but I have no clue how much that shit oughta cost. From what I gather I should use MDF board because it's cheap and sturdy
The look: I can paint it
The power: Good question. I want the cabinet to have only one power button, so I need to figure something out. It would be logical for me to hook both, the CRT and the laptop to an extension cord with a power switch and somehow make it so that once I push that switch on, it also boots up the laptop and the CRT. Though, I'm not entirely sure if the power button in the CRT is a on/off one so technically the CRT could always be on.
DEBUG: If something goes wrong or I need to fix something, that laptop could stand inside the cabinet, neatly on a pedestal so if you open a secret door on the side of the cabinet you get easy access to it.

Am I missing something? Seems like a solid plan, only thing I'm worried about is the shell itself and the power setup to a lesser extent.

You will run into issues hiding the controllers or taking the stick and buttons out to put them into a proper board.

Wiring real controllers isn't hard, you just need a USB connector with breakout board. The wiring is two daisy chains and one line to each trigger, no soldering required because everything crimps.

And buying real arcade controllers will not only be much more durable, but also feel more authentic.

If only because it's one of my favourites, The House of the Dead. Too bad SEGA lost the source code for the arcade version...

Can I have the talent, too?

If so, the answer would be "any".

You don't need much talent to screw a joystick and some buttons into a bit of wood.

You can basically buy flatpack arcade cabinets that only need a screen, some buttons, and a PC.

The only way to actually be good at that game is to play without the pads.

Also
>punching the pads

Palm strikes work a thousand times better.

I love Bemani games too but DDR was the one that mattered most if we're going to argue about stuff like this.

If I fort some reason could play only one game on it I would certainly choose a fighter. KoF UM or one of the Samurai Shodown games probably.... maybe V special.

4 industrial stepper motors should do the trick. The rest is carpentry and software. Do modern game engines have a variable for acceleration like they have for light?

It won't give you a real dogfight experience though, as the most it can do is 1g, and those things turn at 9g IRL. It COULD do a pretty good car.
