Someone's going to get mad at you. I was never a fan of battle, though to be honest, so when people berate a Mario Kart for having shit battle mode, I never really care.

I never played Mario Kart 64 too much. My parents couldn't afford too much, so I had to pick and choose my games carefully, and I was still happy with Super Mario Kart. Every time I go back and play MK64, I can't get over how awful the physics are. Still love most of the courses, though.

Damn I love Mario Kart 64. Me and a couple friends played it for years (like from when it came out till after the Wii version) and got really good at it. Once you reach a certain skill level I feel like the game is even better knowing every quirk and nuance of all the tracks and items and boosting as much as your joystick will allow. Sucks I lost contact.

Anytime I play with my other friends or at a party it's just a snoozefest and there is always some kid talking shit and saying how he's the best while I'm just concealing my powerlevel not boosting and purposefully playing bad. It's not even fun anymore.

>> No.2333431

I'm not including glitches like boosting into that mountain in that one specific spot on Royal Raceway to skip a part of the level because that wasn't intended design.

>god tier
Wario Stadium - perfect mix of everything, no bullshit except falling on that one jump which could be considered a tactical strike depending on your perspective

>high tier
Kalimari Desert
Toad's Turnpike
Sherbet Land
Bowser's Castle - despite some sharp, awkward turns
DK's Jungle Parkway

>mid tier
Koopa Troopa Beach - would be high if not for boost shortcut gimmick
Moo Moo Farm
Mario Raceway
Luigi Raceway - nostalgic, but bland; does its job
Royal Raceway - thought about high, not enough going on

>low tier
Rainbow Road - without the jumps, otherwise mid
Choco Mountain
Frappe Snowland
Banshee Boardwalk - skill based but unfun
Yoshi Valley - fundamentally dumb

Tried to spread the tiers as evenly as possible. That was fun. It was a little hard because the tracks collectively were pretty solid and the gap between mid and high is minimal. Low, on the other hand, had distinctively unfun mechanics.

>> No.2333454

>>2333431
Solid list and I completely agree with your high tier list but wouldn't put Wario Stadium as god tier just because it is so bland visually and a bit too long but usually play with the rule that the first shortcut at the start is allowed to shorten it up a little. Also I personally like Koopa Beach because of the boost spot as it adds a bit more skill to the track and would put it with high tier.

Everything else I can pretty much get behind but really I enjoy all the levels.

>> No.2333467

>>2324289
For a long time, it was wario, then I switched to Luigi.

My favorite map was that fucking yoshi maze. The Wii U version of it does not do it justice, though. The camera isn't right for it.

Favorite Battlemap was probably skyscraper. I wanted to like Blockfort and Decker, but it didn't work for 2 player games.

>> No.2333484

I really enjoy the tracks that have some hard shortcuts or skill to pull off that will screw you if you mess up as it adds a lot of risk to reward value. These are all ones I see as intended unlike DK's or Frappe Snowland lap skip

Rainbow Road - "The Jump"
Yoshi Valley - right before the egg
Koopa Troopa Beach - the tunnel
DK's - how far can you aim left off the ramp
Wario Stadium - not the first shortcut which is easy or the 10 second lap one but jumping the wall right after the ramp and before the finish can be great in a close race.

The best though is driving between the trains on Kalimari Desert.

>> No.2333507

>>2333454
I thought about it. Maybe if I didn't come up with the list in five minutes I would've put it up there. It was a tough choice, man.

>>2333484
The jump 10m from the starting line on Rainbow Road was probably intended. Well, if it wasn't intended, they clearly knew about it. It's hard not to know about it when the clear implication is to get airtime and also to look around as soon as you enter the level for the first time. It's practically begging you to do it.

>> No.2333518

>>2333507
Yeah I was saying the Rainbow Road jump is intended.

>no one risks it on the first lap
>start falling behind in the race
>"fuck it i'll go for it on lap two"

>way behind now
>the only option is to go for it again on lap three
>land it and now right back in the race
>a close battle all the way to the finish

>> No.2334239

>>2325830

yeah, diddy kong racing was infinitely better (more tracks, dem vehicles, and dat overworld)

though the problem is that everyone and their mother played MK64, so for multiplayer it was just the go-to. plus thanks to lightning and other overpowered items that popped up in last place, it kind of evened things out when you played with people who were shittier than you, whereas playing DKR with lesser players was a joke.

>> No.2334943

>>2334239
It's not completely imbalanced like the Wii version. If you're good at MK64 you will still win against lesser players. If you are evenly matched and skilled you should know how to react to most items.

But maybe you think DKR is INFINITELY better because completely dominating someone in that game is easier.

>> No.2335092

>>2334124
Choco Mountain isn't even remotely hard so that's instantly off the list. It's a bad track but it's not hard.
Yoshi Valley has safe routes for the most part, with the final egg section being the worst. I guess there's still the chance of being blown off the cliff by an item.
Banshee Boardwalk is inherently hard, probably the hardest of any track. This takes my pick. Splitscreen doesn't help.
Bowser's Castle is cramped at points and one of the funnest tracks, but probably not nearly as hard as Banshee Boardwalk even with the 4-player mayhem. It's close though.

>> No.2335130

>>2335092
I put Choco Mountain on there based on my 4 player experiences with it. The falling boulders usually aren't an issue but that right turn after it is a great spot for bananas and shelling people off to the earlier part of the track. Also the 3 last humps before the finish can mess you up if you get out of control and crash on the side of the track.
I think Yoshi Valley isn't hard or harder than Choco Mountain but listed it as a possible track some might have difficulty with.
Banshee Boardwalk I don't find too difficult track wise but assume everyone is going off at least once at the zig-zag-drop with no railings due to items.
Bowser's Castle is one of the hardest tracks for me in 4 player. Having only a forth of the screen makes seeing things like the sliding thwomps harder as well as everything else, some asshole always puts shit on that skinny lava bridge, and the overall layout and hard corners makes it tough.

I can't really think of any other hard levels besides maybe Toads Turnpike or DK's Jungle Parkway maybe?
