Have ever managed to 1cc a shmup? How long did it take you?
I only managed to 1cc Satazius until now on easy and Normal mode and have around 20 hours in it.
Currently I am trying to 1cc R-Type Leo and have around 7 hours in it, but the boss in stage 4 is a total bitch.

Yeah, I reached to stage 2-5 on DOJBL last week for the first time.

Fuck, I got a pretty good run until Genbu/Stage 3 Boss, then died two times against his last attack

and got game over on first stage 2-5 mid-boss (cuz I'd not get hyper to do the survival trick).

I dropped my DOJBL 2-ALL attempts for a while cuz I'm really frustrated about my last attempt...

Now I want to get a Soukyugurentai 1CC.

Never played too many shmups so when I was playing Darius Twin on SNES I was pretty overwhelmed by how irritating it gets, especially since you only get so many lives and no credits.
Only been able to make it through the first level without dying once and have passed the second one losing one life.
After that, always die to either level 3 or the level 3 boss.

Still working on Gradius arcade. Moai stage is the one that gives me the most trouble now.
I try to follow a consistent route through it but I still die a lot. I can still complete the stage if I die after the halfway point but that still leaves me completely underpowered for stage 4, and there's a lot of shit you need to kill really fast in stage 4 before they spew bullets all over the screen.

I'm still not sure why they bothered putting extra lives in. 9 times out of 10, if you die at all you're completely fucked no matter how many lives you have.

Baryon. I needed to take the most overpowered fighter (Red/Red), fish for a ton of bonus lives in Stage 3 (more than can be displayed on the screeen, so about 20), then pray I don't choke more than one or two lives until final boss, because the SOB is insanely durable and avoiding ground turret attacks near impossible. Then again I'm a scrub with reflexes of a drugged elephant, so an actually good player could probably manage to beat the game with one of the worse fighters.

You need a lot of concentration and very good overview about what is going on on the screen.
You must be able to concentrate on multiple things at the same time.
Like watching how the bullets come from above, from behind, from the front, all at the same time, while still being able to not crash into the next mountain or whatever.
This is the most difficult about these games, imo. Having your eyes everywhere.
People who are good at multitasking can be pretty good in this I think.

Most on /vr/ dislike it or think ambivalently of the site. They lurk here sometimes; Joseph Joestar, co-runner of the podcast, frequents /vr/ and isn't proud of HG101's writing.

It's revealed many games to me I wasn't previously aware of, but Kulata and the authors can't decide if they're writing buyer's guides or general overviews of games referencing what's been observed. And even when I'm using an article to learn about mechanics and such, many have inaccuracies or distorted info compared to counterexamples elsewhere. The site wants to be (one of) the first to discuss an obscure game in detail, and then decide whether said game's first impression amongst readers should be positive or negative. Kulata's too lax about the approaches of articles written for games (clashing with how there can't be multiple articles per game, in case more than one writer has a perspective under his model) and so you get that on top of different writing styles. So the intentions aren't sound either—HG101 superficially resembles both the enthusiast press and second-rate academic review writing.

Splitting the opinionated parts of articles from their bodies would leave out any politics associated with first impressions, rather than leaving them integrated. Just putting all that in a demarcated "opinion" page would be fine. Some don't wanna be told if something's good or bad, just what that game is, and maybe then what others have said + the article writer's opinion. I know, for example, that Kulata whines about STGs he's not good at, but other authors I might trust more (hypothetically) would have opinions worth listening to. I can't help but think specialist sites function better for their audiences than HG101 does trying to fit every size as one. The site could at least dig around for reviews/impressions from those well-versed in that game or genre and point there without embedding opinion in a description.

I've 1cc'd Gigawing in the arcade, and beat that asshole last boss to get the happy end (I fed bombs shamelessly on his final form)

I did the same thing on Chorensha, with the analog on a ps2 controller no less, and also, shamelessly fed bombs against the 3-0 boss.

I can't beat Judgement Silversword. Mitsurugi is a fucking cunt.

I don't like Ikaruga.

I never actually finished Gradius 5.

I've been thinking about getting an arcade stick for shmups.
Should I go with LS-32 or LS-40?

Correct me if I'm wrong but shmup fans go for the LS-56(-01)

Pretty common opinion, but why not?

>I never actually finished Gradius 5.
Me neither. Fuck that gas stage.

If you are looking for the ultimate joystick for shmups,It is like the quest for the grail, no one found it as it's can take many forms and it's mostly a matter of opinion.

First If you are migrating from a regular controller to an arcade stick for the first time the joystick doesn't matter at all for you.
I would advice you to go for a cheap Mad catz SE to see if it's your kind of thing, that will get also familiar/tame joystick/buttons controls.

If you're already used to joystick controls for FG and want to have a ready-made specialized piece for shmups, as you already guessed it, go for seimitsu for now.

But IMO choosing one model over the others is close to nitpicking as they are all high end products.
Some "noticeable" differences.
-The LS-56 is "heavier" then LS-32/40,
-LS-40/56 engage distant is slightly shorter then the LS-32.
-LS-32 has loose neutral compared to the others two and sometimes the shaft rise a little bit when reach the maximum throw.

But seriously those can be a pro or a cont depend on how you play.

After that you have customizing your Joystick Suzo/Euro/omni stick Sanwa or seimitsu the ski is your limite,

Isn't the 56 the shortest throw? I know at the end of the day it's all about opinions and preference, but the 56 is pretty much built for shmups as a baseline.

I need a recommendation for a good Babby's First shmup. I'm terrible at every one I've tried.

For me it was Gradius on the Turbo Grafx/PC-Engine. Fun game with the difficulty tuned a bit easier for at-home play. Similarly you might like Salamander/Life Force. The NES ports are decent too.

Deathsmiles. It's so piss easy until the very last stage, still good for starting players.

Damn dude congrats if you are still here. You should try and get STG Weekly to do an episode of Metal Black with you on it.

It's always good to play game for this with difficulty settings.
At best use something more recently, like Satazius for example.
Old shmups are pretty much always kinda hard, but Satazius is really beginner friendly on easy difficulties.

I played some Elemental Master (Technosoft, Sega Genesis / Mega Drive) recently. Didn't get too far, but I liked it.

It had a "beat stage to get a new weapon" system like Mega Man. What other shmups do this?

I am the anon of >>2326991.
i experienced with sticks from different manufacturer with different parts (customized or not) and one of my conclusions is that unlike sanwa, seimitsu sticks (minus the LS-33/58/60 cause i never got them) have no differences on throw distances.
But I personally don't see what make you think the LS-56 standout that much for shmups.
I prefer the LS-40,even if i don't play with them that mush I have 2 of them on my 2 panels because they had the same fixation plate as my old LS-32 that the only reason mostly but i also think now they are more multipurpose when you switch games.

For Shmups i'm still searching for a replacement to my old TM-8, working on a Universal STC but those things are a pain in the ass from any aspect you look at them.they are unusable out of the box. hard and expensive for modding ,hard to install and even to fix on a panel and they are ugly as sin.
I still have a chance to buy a custom Suzo Inductive but it's expensive for a stick and i don't want to deal with another discontinued products like my TM-8.

I usually avoid shmups thread for many reasons (as you can see i am talking about joysticks here) but i will take the time to give you just a small advice: there is no point in choosing a game just because it easy,it will not improve you skills at all, choose a game because it look interesting for you Gameplay, themes, art direction even the music can make you choose a game over another and just so you know minus maybe the reaction speed we are mostly equals when playing a game for the first time as we all need time to learn enemies paths, bullets and bosses patterns.
Also play 1 credit/play. you can put 2,3 (that a minimum of 9 lives for most games without extend) at max if you want but always try to decrease the number of lives you use.
If repeating a level or a section is a boring aspect for you, I think this is not a genre for you.
