2303451 No.2303451 [Reply] [Original]

What's your honest opinion on this game?

I've picked it up again recently and playing it and I'm amazed at how good it is, gameplay is very solid, graphics and sound are amazing, enemy AI is pretty good and I love how they get dismembered when you blast them off, collecting insect heads has never been this fun.

Is the tribal collection the real reason why this game isn't as well liked as say, Goldeneye or Banjo-Kazooie? Or is it because it's a late N64 game and maybe it went under some people's radars?

Even if the tribal collection turns some people off, there's still the multiplayer modes, and also I think finding all tribals isn't that bad, I've seen worse case of collecthatons (including the aforementioned Banjo-Kazooie).

It's quickly growing to be my favorite Rare game.

Replayed it again about a year ago. Controls took a little bit to get used to again but it still holds up. People complaining about the tribal collecting are just babies. It was easier than I remembered. Now the Floyd missions, on the other hand, were and still are a pain in the ass, at least if you're trying to rainbow rank those shits.

>> No.2303479

>>2303474

I found the controls to be really good if you set them on Expert (which lets you move freely using the c-buttons when you're aiming). Honestly very surprised with the controls of this game, the aiming is also better than on Goldeneye (haven't played Perfect Dark yet).
I believe I haven't unlocked Floyd yet. I'm on Mizar's palace using Lupus right now.

>>2303479
IIRC, you get Floyd on Juno's path.

It's one of my favorites from the N64 era, and judging by the way it got talked about, I felt like I was one of the few who beat the game straight through. The tribals weren't that bad; the floyd missions were bad...but what still sends chills down my spine is the final boss. In particular, one seemingly unavoidable attack of his that sucks your life away like a milkshake.

>>2303479
Floyd is the little flying robot guy you assemble on Tawfret. If you got a bro around, he can pick up a second controller and pot shot things for you. Or he can be a total dick and kill tribals as you go to save them.

>>2303498
Laser hand? You kinda have to strafe and try to jump over it near the middle of the stage. Usually you'll take minimal damage that way but if you get caught flat-footed you're gonna eat shit to it.

>> No.2303710

Probably one of the best shooters on the N64 with great gunplay and graphics and also nice weapons
BUT THE FUCKING COLLECTATHON ELEMENTS SUCH AS THE SHIP PIECES AND TRIBALS IS BULLSHIT, ITS FUCKING BULLSHIT ITS NOT EVEN WORTH THE WEIGHT AND HEIGHT. Seriously, if you are picking up that game, STOP immediately at the moment you beat the boss because that's as far you are going to get.

>> No.2303726

I really enjoyed the game, good challenge, gorgeous visually for the time, though I never could beat the final Mizar battle.

Its overlooked because its so late in the n64 life i think.

>> No.2303738

I think the tribal collection aspect made the game suffer. I quit at a certain point when I couldn't find a few or they kept getting killed by bugs. Picked up again years later, same issue. That shit can suck my dick. Otherwise, one of the best titles on the n64 and I used to masturbate furiously to veela when I was a kid.

>> No.2303823

I think the way to solve the Tribal issue is to keep the ones that you collect and not have to get them all in one shot. That way, if one gets killed, you just need to go back and get that one.

>> No.2303948

>>2303479
Expert controls are a must.
I wouldn't necessarily compare Goldeneye/Perfect Dark's aiming to JFG just simply because JFG is third person and those are first person.

>>2303451
Honestly, I found the multiplayer shallow.

>>2303498
Getting the tribals isn't so bad, but when people are playing a game like this they don't expect to have to collect ALL of one thing. I didn't mind the Floyd levels at all personally.
The one level that annoyed me is one you unlock right before the end and it's just endless corridors on a busted ship. Never knew where I was going.

>> No.2304050

I don't recall having a problem with the tribals when I played this as a child. I do, however, remember finding some of floyd's missions tough. I also struggled on one level where you have to shoot crystals into some collector thingy that flies into the sky or something like that.

>I wouldn't necessarily compare Goldeneye/Perfect Dark's aiming to JFG just simply because JFG is third person and those are first person.

I'm mostly comparing the precision, I played both Goldeneye and JFG the other night, and after Goldeneye, I found the aiming on JFG better, more precise. (and both games use the same way to aim... hold R to enter in "aim mode", etc), Goldeneye is still good though, but in JFG they got it better. Maybe Perfect Dark is even better but as I said I haven't played it yet.

>> No.2305005

I remember I loved the game as a kid, and played the hell out of it. Then I beat Mizar the first time and collected all the ship parts, only to realize that fucker wanted me to collect all the goddamn tribals. Who cares that the big bad is still out there and still a threat, faggot tribal king thinks his useless pacifist race is more important than kicking ass. I dropped the game and never went back.

A shame, because everything up until that part was great.

Talking about Goldeneye/PZ sorry. Though im not surprised if you can do alternate aiming similar in JSG

>> No.2305267

>>2305259

On JFG's expert control, you use A and B to switch weapons, c-units to strafe/jump/crouch, Z to shoot, and R to aim/position camera. I don't find the R button for aiming bad at all honestly, so that's why I'm wondering what other button would you prefer instead.

>> No.2306464

I enjoyed collecting the tribals. I really don't understand how anybody could hate it unless they were really bad at the game and struggled to play through the levels the first time around and the thought of coming back to them at a higher difficulty sounded painful. Not for me. I found it fun as fuck to git gud and save the bears, explore for ship parts and find new levels.

The key to playing JFG properly is setting the right controls though.

>> No.2306492

this is a very fun game but it is held back by terribly outdated controls and ofc has the minor pain in the ass of the tribal collection wall at the end of the game. the tribal thing isn't even that big of a deal - some people see it as a cheap way to extend the gameplay, but a cheap extension is better than no extension.

lots of fun 'hidden' stuff, love being a dog in a tank, head collection was a blast. if it weren't for the controls I might play through it again. it's just not worth it when there are easier shooters/collectors to control. great game for its time though

I think years literally passed between getting assigned to find all those Furby-ass cocksuckers and actually finding all of them. I gave it my all at first and then dropped the game for ages, but I enjoyed everything up until that point so much that I just had to try again eventually. Surprisingly, I remember everything after that being much easier than finding all of those little shit stains, though I do remember some frustration with the broken ship level that someone else mentioned.

Also, this was my first experience with full 3D jiggle physics, which was just about the most amazing thing in the world for me back then. I can still remember taking the occasional peak by running that little strumpet against a wall so the camera would get nice and close to her bouncing breasts. Damn, I should find my copy....

Yeah, JFG was the first time I saw 3D jiggle physics too. probably Dead or Alive and JFG were some of the first ones to do it.

I just reuined all the geminis in the pyramid, and now I've finally started the hunt for the tribals and space ship parts.
I haven't played most of the game in a long time though, so I should be having fun replaying the levels. Going through Goldwood right now, apparently, I've only visited 2 locations here, looking for the other 2 (Lodge and Rim).

I also got armor upgrades, so now Vela and Juno have jetpacks (although I don't know how to activate them) and Lupus is a tank now, sweet.

Quake
Super Mario 64
Virtua Fighter

It's not 2d or 3d that makes a game crap. There are plenty of generic dime a dozen crappy 2d platformers as well as there are many poor 3d games.

Then again you are probably just trolling, like that guy last year who posted 20 topics about how there should be a containment board about SEGA games as well.

Nah I love sega, I also love all those games you listed. I just don't see them as retro in the least. Modern games play more or less the same as they do minus some things like level design which has gone down the shitter in most games.

3d fighting games haven't changed very much though cause VF was so solid.

That doesn't make them "not retro", not any more than Street Fighter 2 for all fighting games or Warcraft for all RTS games or Space Invaders for all shmups.

Vela is a cutie, Juno looks creepy, yes.
Rare's art is a bit hit and miss with me. I'm not a big fan of Banjo-Kazooie for example (>>2314569 this is so true), but JFG has a cool sci-fi setting, cool enemy design and the different planets have interesting locations and atmosphere.
