Why would you pick the weakest R-Type game as best SNES shmup?

That version is the one that doesn't feature checkpoints right? Where if you die, you'll start at the beginning of the stage.

Pic is not the best -it's U.N. Squadron-, but the one I replay more often.

SlowdowNES is not great for that.
See what >>2311534 ,>>2311538 and>>2311114 said, that the best you can find.

Starfox and Assault suit valken have one or two nice space levels.

For shmups in general i can add UN squadron/Area 88,Parodius da! and Pocky rocky 2 maybe Biometal too, pushing the list a little further with Spriggan powered,Super EDF and Super SWIV but that would be by lowering my standards.

SNES is risible for the genre.

>> No.2316064

Space Megaforce is pretty great if you're new to the genre or wanna get into compile shmups.

>> No.2316090

i would never recommend Space Aleste for a newcomer.

If i had to recommendation an entry to compile games it would be ZxZ (ps1) cause the learning curve is easy.

That's not how you spell R-Type III.

I liked R-Type 3 better, but it is also much harder. I liked it more because of the variety, that and super R-Type was too much like the previous games.

Not that there aren't plenty of good shmups on Genesis, but you're missing quite a few good ones if you just have a Genesis.

Still beats SNES shooters.

>> No.2316839

>>2316697
Yes we all know the Genesis is superior for shmups, but that doesn't have anything to do with this thread. The OP wanted SNES shooters.

If I made a thread asking for Mega Drive JRPGs I'd be pissed if someone came in and started going on about how the SNES has a better RPG library. No shit.

I don't know, but I find R-Type III runs pretty good on SNES and looks fantastic. I doubt it would be better on MD/Genesis.

The mega drive certainly has more good to great shooters but the SNES still has a few great ones that are not hamstrung in any way
