Starfox and Assault suit valken have one or two nice space levels.

For shmups in general i can add UN squadron/Area 88,Parodius da! and Pocky rocky 2 maybe Biometal too,pushing the list a little further with Spriggan powered,Super EDF and Super SWIV but that would be by lowering my standards.

SNES is risible for the genre.

Space Megaforce is pretty great if you're new to the genre or wanna get into compile shmups.

I liked R-Type 3 better, but it is also much harder. I liked it more because of the variety, that and super R-Type was too much like the previous games.

I don't know, but I find R-Type III runs pretty good on SNES and looks fantastic. I doubt it would be better on MD/Genesis.

Gradius III was my favorite.

The mega drive certainly has more good to great shooters but the SNES still has a few great ones that are not hamstrung in any way

This may be a stretch for the term SHUMP; but my absolute fav & most hours spent had to be Metal Combat II. Sooo many batteries :)
