I'm not great at pins though I love them. The tactile/kinetic nature of the game is very satisfying and a good table makes you feel like you can get better.

The Dracula (based on the Coppola film) table is great fun, if a little weird. T2 is lots of fun and has a cool gun trigger. There's a new-ish Spiderman, I don't know which movie it's from but it's very playable, if a bit on the easy side. Favorite of all time is probably Twilight Zone.

I'd love to own one someday but I'll have to live somewhere more permanent.

Watch some Youtube if you just want to learn some basic techniques. Otherwise I'd say just pick a table you enjoy playing and practice. Learn the layout and how to shoot for certain lanes, when to hold the ball, how much you can shake the machine without tilting, etc. You'll get better.

Most pinball players I've met (here in Portland) are fairly typical friendly dudes you'd meet in a bar. It's a good way to shoot the shit.

I really loved as a kid one table that I can't find online. It was a Star Trek pinball, based on the classic series but more recent (at least late80s-early 90s) than the 1979 classic table, when you hit some targets the screen above shows that you just hit some klingon or romulan ship. Similar to the Next Generation pinball as a machine, but different in theme.

A year ago, I went to a place with the Stern Indiana Jones cabinet in a dark corner. I know it's the inferior version, but I had a bit of fun with it because of it's 8-ball multiball mode.

This past weekend, I went back there for a birthday party. They still had IJ, but now it was right at the front near the entrance. Ended up playing the shit out of it; scored one replay after another. Sadly, though, it had fallen into a bit of disrepair. The sensor needed to progress through 'Last Crusade' was non-responsive, and occasionally there would be a lag/delay of anywhere between 15-30 seconds before it would kick out balls dropped into 'Last Crusade' and 'Temple of Doom'. Hell, I came close to nearly breaking the machine because, during the aforementioned multiball, I dropped too many balls into 'Last Crusade'. Took forever for it to kick them out, during which time the game would count it as a ball drain even though the mode was still active. But the game kept registering an absurd number of hits at that time, to the point where it helped snag me a high score.

Notice the modality. Making Timeshock into a real table is expensive, which is a fact admitted even by the Silvercastle team. There are also lots of small details that wouldn't work with IRL physics like the height of ramps (which were programmed to be about 50% less steep than their visual height in the game) and the whole orbit rail system.

Fantastic Journey is an even better example of impracticality: the basic gameplay is nothing unrealistic, but good luck trying to fit big vehicle toys (with built-in scoops and switches) and a system that changes between them reliably inside an actual table.

Found a Big Buck Hunter the other day, put some time into it. But the deer switch was broken and I couldn't get the main multiball going. Felt like a cheat.

All the practice on Visual Pinball PhysMod5 paid off though. It's the same, muscle memory finally improved from computer play rather than retarded. Skillful flipper work.

You need to install the DLLs, you need to install Visual PinMAME in the right place, and you need to put all the fonts into your Fonts folder yourself. Sorry, but I can't do everything for you.

All the files I would provide can be found at the vpforums starting here http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showcat=5

So I just got back from the Texas Pinball Festival. That was fun as hell. Ended up wracking up over 4 hours of play time or so before calling it quits.

There were so many machines and so many people there. Hundreds of machines.

I took pictures of a bunch of the machines I played (but not all). I'll probably post them here in the morning.

Lethal Weapon or Terminator definitely were my favorites.

>> No.2316567

Part of your problem might be that you interpret Lord of the Rings from a beginner's perspective, noticing the most attractive play feature and assuming it's the essential one.

Lord of the Rings has the widest pinball rules in all of pinball...hour long games with no repetition style rules. Like Simpsons Pinball Party. Keith Johnson real man rules. Skillful player makes skillful rules.

In LotR, there are 7 modes above the Balrog/Ring ramp. Those are your main feature. You've got KEEP letters on the inlane rollovers, these light your Two Towers multiball lock on the sword ramp.

Those 7 modes, you want to hit those. Choose mode with those little red lights up there, flip to change. Trap ball, flip to right or left of mode, flip, start Ent mode first.

You want those Ents man. They let you make progress on Tower shots for 500,000 or 750,000 per hit, only takes a few to complete the mode. But as you hit it you'll make progress toward Return of the King multiball from the Path of the Dead.

If you beat the modes like Ent, you get a Gift from the Elves. These are huge. Extra ball, double scoring, huge things, bonus multiball modes. Things like that.

There's Fellowship multiball, which you make progress toward by collecting Fellowship members through various shots then nailing the left loop out to Moria. That's when you really want to bash that Balrog, every Balrog bash gets the bridge ready to cross a Fellowship member to safety up the Two Towers sword ramp.

Gain 7 Gifts of the Elves, activate all 7 modes, complete all 3 main multiballs, then destroy the ring to get to Valinor. Spend your entire life.

Balrog bashing in the main game is just a way to block to ramp and stop me from getting my modes lit. Time that noise out.

I want to ask this to people who are really into pinball, is there anything that should be gone for that really makes a proper pinball? I guess, what's the 'essential' qualities of a pinball, design-wise? What kinds of skills go into mastery of a table, or what kind of things do you look for in finding a good table vs. a bad one? I want to get a better understanding of pinball from the people that play it, to help me in developing a new 'pinball adventure' game I'm designing as well as to help me gain a better appreciation for the older brother of arcade games.

Depth and width of rules. What keeps you feeding money into the machines as opposed to dumping some quarters and forgetting about it is wanting to see what happens and only being able to do so by means of achieving skillful play.

>> No.2328518

>>2327313
Flow of the gameplay around the table. A big thing that makes a bad table, aside from shitty aesthetics and rules, is a lack of smooth paths for the ball to follow (eg. generally curving or strategically-placed straight paths as opposed to arbitrary zig-zags or huge spans of empty space).

A fun physical layout makes it easier to facilitate a fun rule set, as you can then get creative in designing sequences and timing around the different paths to aim the ball at.

I recommend watching through some of the "tutorial" videos on the Professional & Amateur Pinball Association website (http://papa.org/learning-center/video-resources/tutorial-videos/).). Even if you're not interested in playing competitively, watching the gameplay and listening to the commentary will give you an idea of how serious players think about table layouts and rule sets.

However, there are some games that are impossible to not trigger at least one switch on, such as F-14 Tomcat which plunges directly to the locks.

Why are the more modern pinball machines so good at just pulling you into the world they've crafted?
It isn't even like a video game where the visuals change as you progress, the physical existence of the table remains the same throughout the whole experience.
As in if there isn't a prop there, one isn't going to magically appear unless it's already been put there in some fashion like under the table.

My guess is on the art and sound design.
They've got this specific kind of sound to their instruments and tone in their announcements that just sort of gets me all hyped.

Serious question to everyone, what do you like about pinball? Do people usually get into it for the variety of cool looking tables or is it more about the joy/challenge of playing?

Also, is emulation/video pinball similar enough to the real thing to get a feel for pinball? (in terms of actual play and not feel/asthetics)

My good friend and his father run a surprisingly successful pinball/arcade repair business. He also owns a couple tables, but i only played them briefly. Im normally hanging with him when it is too late to turn them on because others are sleeping. Ive always automatically assumed that pinball is boring, but id like to learn what this shit is all about and see if it is fun.

There aren't that many games where there's an infinite and exponential level of talent one can develop.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo...but with pinball there's also that physical thing, like doing real skateboard tricks or yo-yo tricks or something.

Plus there are all the rules, and modes. You need to do physical things with precision and skill in order to unlock the lights and bells and whistles and wizard modes. Only skill will get you up that mountain. Who knows what the reward will be? Maybe a free game to try again and get a little closer.

It's mostly the physical element when comparing it to video games and also the challenge.

There is a bit of unpredictability when playing pinball and no ball ever plays the exact same. There is also the skill factor where your general pinball skills cross over to any machine but each one has it's own challenges and plays differently. This is a very simplistic explanation for me but maybe you get the general idea.

As far as emulation and pinball video games go, it is completely different when playing. But I would recommend checking out The Pinball Arcade on PC if you want to learn tables or get a better understand of the fundamental pinball rules if you are new.

I've been frequenting a local arcade and been surprised by the large variation in flipper strength.

Some of the games the flipper strength is so weak you cant make loops or straight up the middle ramp shots if you start from a cradle.

They also have a gladiator with flippers strong enough that the ball bounces on almost every shot.

Is there supposed to be that much variation?
Do tournaments have such varied machines?
Is it easy to alter the strength of a flipper?
