2302529 No.2302529 [Reply] [Original]

So now that it's 2015, there's gotta be some worthwhile portable emulators to pick up. I've been doing a bit of research into them lately and a few have stood out to me.

>Revo K101 GBA clone, $70 USD
>http://www.k1gbasp.com/
Looks like a really solid GBA clone, but it doesn't offer much support for other emulators other than NES. Includes TV out. $70 is a decent price tag.

>GWC Zero, $150 USD
>http://www.gcw-zero.com/
Successful kickstarter project that has launched with opensource linux. HDMI out? Looks really nice, but I haven't found much about overall performance for various emulators. PSX, SNES may have issues? No N64 support?

>JXD S7800B, $150 USD
>http://www.jxdofficial.com/jxd-s7800b-7-inch-quad-core-game-console.html
Appears to be end-game, especially for the price. The 7" screen looks beautiful, but it might be a bit clunky to actually hold and operate due to the size. 1080p HDMI out. Specs should allow for easy emulation of PSX and N64, and potentially even GCN or PS2. Not sure of actual performance.

>Nvidia Shield Portable, $200 USD
>http://shield.nvidia.com/store/portable
Looks like the best option currently available for performance, but the layout looks weird. Appears to have full support for N64, PSX, GCN?

All of these had 2013 releases, so the technology isn't exactly up to date, but I haven't seen anything else worthwhile that's available mainstream yet. If anyone has personal testimony to any of these devices or any upcoming portable emulators, then please chime in.

Lastly, an honorable mention of a portable console (non-emulator).

>Hyperkin SUPABOY Portable SNES Console, $75 USD
>http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-SUPABOY-Portable-Console-Super-NES/dp/B005GSRPG8
Like a fully-functional SNES console that you can also play on-the-go. Includes support for two controller inputs and RCA TV output.

alternatively you could get a DS lite and combo a DS flash cart with an ezflash for the GBA slot. Lets you load up on DS games and a lot of emulators for older games as well as GBA games and extra features like rumble on some ds games (completely worthless feature but its there)

I think the JXD is the best option out of all of those, if you dont mind android. Especially because you can play it on your tv, and it supposedly doesnt look like shit.

I am still waiting on the PS Vita to get hacked though. I may get a JXD if it never happens.

Stop.

Retro vidya is nothing without nostalgia, and there is no nostalgia in playing SNES games on a handheld. I'd argue there is a bit of nostalgia in using emulators on a computer, depending on how you grew up.

You still can find new PSP (model 3000) at big stores, and a 32gb Micro DS card + the card adaptor costs only a fraction of what Sony's memory cards would cost.

The JXD S7800B is cheap and terrible. I bought two of them.

The screen was separated a bit and the LED was leaking through on the bottom on one. Dead pixels.

The second one the thumb stick fucked up from playing SFA3 for a couple hours doing spin kicks. It snapped it so the top thumb thing would spin in circles (thus not letting me do the thumb twirl properly). It also had dead pixels.

I've been saving up to get one since August. I've seen a lot of praise on YouTube, and from what I can tell it looks and plays beautifully.

I've heard that while defects are very common, they've improved their build quality and quality checking over the last few months, and that if you get a good one, it's a very good system.

I've tried to find criticism, but the biggest common problem has been the wi-fi antennnas, which used to often come completely broken and had to be soldered back on. Also, the d-pad is ill-suited for fighting games, unfortunately. I've also hoped that by the time I had the money (I have $80 saved up), there might be a JXD S7800C with bluetooth and improved controls or something.

I never heard about any problems with the HDMI out, and I sat through over three hours of video reviews and gameplay. I also can't find a more ideal alternative to the JXD S7800B. The screen is massive, it doubles as a proper android tablet which I also want, the controls look decent, it can handle everything up to Dreamcast and does PSP reasonably well for certain games (Monster Hunter, Mega Man, Prinny). It also runs Android ports natively like the GTA 3 trilogy, the Sonic ports, and KotOR, which all seemed to play smoothly and control properly.

Is it really too good to be true? And if so, what is better in the $150 range?

I have a JXD s7800B.
For me it's to big and clunky.
I need an extra bag to take it with me.

It emulates most stuff fine enough.
psx is good.
I have no experience with n64 emulation cause i don't really like those games.
dreamcast emulation is good for some games and non working for some(more a problem with the emulator than the cpu needed i guess)

psp emulation needs some tweaking, but works decently (not vr omg)
I'm not interested in that though.

Wi-fi is bad so it's not really a good tablet for non gaming purposes.

D-pad feels plastic and squeeky. controls are decent enough besides that however.

probably gonna get a tiny bluetooth controller for my cheap phone and sell my jxd.
I need something that fits in my pocket for the bus/train ride.

If you're in Brazil, the Phaser FunTab PC501 is worth looking into. Runs Android 4.0, which isn't as much of a bummer as I thought it would be. The buttons are all good except for the analog one, which feels a little too fragile. Everything else, no complaints: native emulators run decently except for the PSX one and N64 one is really lazy at loading textures, but they have integrated Netplay via wifi and bluetooth, and the buttons are mapped as keyboard letters so it's easy to map them on third-party emulators making the errors in the natives a non-issue. I paid the equivalent of $45 USD on a new one and I'm pretty happy with it, especially because now I can just roll around in bed at night trying games I never found the time or the energy to take on before but always wanted to, like Survival Kids.
