Can anyone recall some games which really reward perfection? Could be through compounding powerups that are lost upon death, lack of continues, score bonuses or otherwise. The only few i can think of right now would be Ninja Gaiden II, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Bushido Blade.

Any genre or platform is welcome.

Mischief Makers S rank can only be earned by playing at some serious speedrun levels. It's the only game where a score by itself felt so rewarding

I don't think I ever got an S rank on any MM level.
Is there any actual reward for S-ranking or it's enough with the gems?

I'm still in awe that I could get the gold gem on The Day Of level. I mashed that button like a motherfucker until I got the timing and rhythm right.

Astyanax for the NES fucks you over by taking away your weapon upgrades upon death. They carry over from stage to stage. Since you really only get one powerup per stage, this really fucks you up on a stage you die on if you lose them.

Can't get to the last level unless you find all the secrets without losing all your lives.

Any arcade game in which the scoring system has a combo bonus. The better the combo, the higher the bonus. If you miss or get hit, the combo resets.

I dont think there's a reward for doing it besides braging rights, I just like when a game natively acknowledged "top level" play. I remember back in the day visiting a Treasure fan message board discussing ways to get S ranks. The first few who posted videos as proof, very crazy speedruns full of physics trcks and exploits, and only barely getting the rank even then. I got a few myself, but only the easier ones, and made it into an in-board ranking. Fun times

You should mention that you need to be a literal master of the game to even achieve that without save states.

Not really, you get a ton of lives from the six bonus items. There's even a spot in level 5 that lets you get 2 extra lives each death.

I remember having to do something pretty crazy to be able to fight Jade in the arcade version of MKII. You had to win a specific match using just low kick or something like that.

In the Gradius series, the game becomes near impossible of you die mid level without any powerups in the later levels and the difficulty is tuned with the expectation that you have gotten that far with all your powerups intact. People have come to call this the "Gradius Effect"

The best shmup on the Genesis, Gaiares is like that as well, except it goes by whole stages. There are some points where you really need to get one power up and keep it through several stages.

Star riding isn't as hard as it looks. You just have to experiment with it and memorize where to throw it to get where you want.

Fantasy Zone is putting me into such a zone. I wonder if you can counterstop this game, or get max coinage within a run. The plot also makes sense and stops feeling tacked-on when you've had to do runs over and over again; the evolution of economic strategy prompts questioning, and both shop balloons acting like assholes and the final stage suddenly letting you shop every time you die tells a weird story of the game world.
