>> No.2287524

>>2287232
Soft subbing is arguably "superior" but there are more potential pitfalls for the end-user. Media streaming to a PS3, for example, doesn't support (some?) soft subs, so the few times I needed to do that, hard subs were a life saver.

Compare this with the advantages of soft subbing:
-Different subtitle tracks for different languages (doesn't apply here)
-Ability to configure the subtitle style (also potentially a drawback, since default subtitles in most programs/devices I've used are usually pretty ugly)
-Ability to extract the script (maybe 1% would want this?)
-Ease of distribution for revised scripts (reasonable)

With all the whining and crap subtitlers seem to get from people, it's easy to understand why they don't want a bunch of "I cant maek subtitle plz help!!!" annoyance on top of that.

That said, I actually like nitpicky discussions like these except when they descend into shitposting. And I like the fact that there's a new episode even more!

Why did you leave off the actual advantages?

-Use of the original "high quality master" video without making a copy of a copy (lossless video)
-Flawless vector graphic scaling when fullscreen - subs look exactly as intended with no encoding at any point, only rendering
-Ability to watch the episode with no subtitles and thus have a perfect archival copy
-Ability for foreign users to translate the script to their own language, available to them packed in the MKV file
-Ability for everyone whining about fonts / font colors / sign timing / sign styling to never complain again since they could be fixing it themselves with a find/replace if they wanted
-Ability for the episode to be double clicked by any human being with a media player and watched with subs without doing anything else

I haven't played Strider for a few years and really enjoyed this episode. The game is such a masterpiece of arcade action, the way the gameplay constantly shifts and keeps the player on their toes. Too bad Capcom never saw fit to make a third game.

You have to consider that when we started watching there weren't many Seasons that were completely subbed. Imagine having to stop at season 3 or 4 chronolically instead of Season 15. That's what we went through years ago.
You have over a hundred consecutive subbed episodes now.
Just rewatch them while waiting for new stuff. It's much better than jumping around.

>The challenge this time is Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll, an unusual platformer mixed with early fighting game. But who cares about that because I have two words for you. Power. Glove. That's right, you get to see Arino try to use everyone's favorite peripheral.

>Shockingly, this is another episode translated by Zari-Gani and edited by Hirayuki.

Some of the games are still rigged for him to fail Master Blaster being the prime suspect Granted there are some episodes where they just outright said 'no' and forced him to continue when he wanted to give up Ghouls n' Ghosts. Granted, it was something that needed to be done, but the fact that they asked him twice was pretty ham fisted.

Weirdness is subjective, and when you have such a huge language barrier and distance between cultures, the focus on what you see and hear about tends to be on the more unusual aspects rather than the mundane stuff.

Plus historically it's been an island country relatively removed from the rest of the world, and then on top of that it was also artifically isolated during the sakoku period which lasted for over 200 years. Things like that cause your culture to grow in some unique directions, in both cool and less cool ways.

That's because it's lives and he'd be able to cheese the game to hell and back if he had 30 lives in a Contra, in Gradius you get all the power ups, but if you die, that's it.

In fact the Konami code might as well be mandatory for Arino just because in later levels if you die, it might as well be a game over since it's impossible to recover.

Right, but the video they actually used was more messed up than the video they shunned...the "high quality master" is fine for the first 40 minutes and fine for the last 13 or so. It's just the 5 minutes in between that could be filled with the blurry one they used, or footage from a DVD episode (if it existed) or whatever. Inoue is really funny on his AD seasons. He was such a sharp contrast after Sasano and Urakawa in terms of gaming skill, but Arino played off him really well (and Inoue did carry Arino a few times gaming-wise as well).

It makes you an idiot for thinking people will complain right after a major dump. The issue is the inconsistency in both quality of videos and releases along with them being late on their promises. Or they still don't know how to have multiple seeds ready when they release a new video to keep things from being bottlenecked. If it was one episode every 2 or 3 weeks at 720, you'd see a lot less complaining because there is at least a method to the madness. But there isn't so that leaves them open to criticism, something you have to deal with instead of white knighting for goons on 4chan of all places.

The first season in particular is in SERIOUS fucking need of a redo - TV-N only subbed the challenge parts of these episodes, and that was when the challenge was only a small part of the show (only during season 2 and 3 would they transition to the format that is now used after the challenge part proved particularly popular - at least I think that's what happened) - the rest was interviews and other stuff, which is all very interesting, but never got subbed. Look at the first three episodes (done completely by the goon squad), and then realize there's eight more episodes of that awesome stuff that TV-N just left out because of whatever reason (I presume laziness?).

And that's not even mentioning the subbing quality. If people complain about the translation quality from the goon squad subs, they'd have a fucking coronary from the TV-N stuff. Sentences would completely lose their meaning, sentence structures would end up ridiculously awkward, they did that retarded fucking "just keep all the words that don't have a direct translation" thing (if you thought "tsundere was bad, you ain't seen shit yet), oh man, it was terrible. There were some poor souls that started watching GCCX from TV-N subs and quit because they were so shit.

I recall seeing a collection of all the dumb shit found in the TV-N subs - I think it was an Imgur album? - can somebody repost that?

Suffice it to say that TV-N was bad, and ideally all GCCX subs from them would be phased out through somebody else doing the episodes as well.

That stuff is mostly interviews and history stuff, so it's technically a good thing they didn't touch them. The interviews they translated in Season 2 are so horrendously mistranslated they completely misrepresent what's being said, and a mistranslated interview isn't very useful.

My take is that if a sub group wants to sub a highly anticipated episode, should they skip ite because one guy somewhere said he wants to release it with no guarantees? (Granted, LC actually did it, but subsequently vanished.) I mean, when /vr subbed stuff, we found what SA was planning and did something else, something more obscure.

I don't think the show is amateurish at all, there's a big group of professionals there (see any of the behind the scenes footage). It's just the look of the show, it helps to reinforce the relationship with the viewer, it humanizes the people onscreen and makes them relatable.

What happened to Yukiko Iwai? You'd think they'd try to get her to do something for the show. Like a live quiz show event where she's the host asking questions to Arino and the ADs.

I'm watching a dubbed version of the Battle Golfer Yui episode right now, I'm assuming it's for Kotaku because that's what's in the filename.

The narrator's pretty excited, which is nice, but it feels less relaxed/chill. His pronunciation of Arino drives me nuts.

From what little I've heard of the dub, the narrator is far too upbeat. They need someone who gives it some amount of gravitas, as if a middle-aged Japanese man trying to complete old video games is very serious business.

I'd say maybe someone like Paul Eiding, mostly because I can imagine his cheesy narration in "Evil Zone" working for something like this.

Kan seriously nails the fuck out of that vibe. The Clock Tower episode in particular is incredibly good - you don't need to understand a lick of the language to get some serious chills just from the shift in intonation, even if Arino is being Arino at the same time.

Reminder that Kan was picked as a narrator to save money on getting a proper narrator. They sure hit the jackpot with that decision.

As an aside, anyone remember what the song at the end of the Jogging Race episode was?

It's part of the cultural divide and interpretation of the show. To the Japanese, it's bit more of a lampoon of the Japanese work place, or at least the early series was when Arino was getting promoted and his interactions with the staff.

But in America it was all about Arino's indomitable spirit to beat the game, so of course an upbeat narration functioned better. Granted Kan has pretty good self awareness which is why he changed to a slower and deeper tone during the clock tower episode.

>>2310267

I hear Gun laws in Japan are restrictive to the point where you can't own a real firearm or something, so that's why they're allowed to make toy guns that look like the real thing.

It's not like in North America where you CAN legally own a gun, but toy guns aren't allowed to look real. LJN (yes, THAT LJN) released waterguns that looked like real weapons, however there were incidents where cops would shoot and kill children playing with them, so sales dropped, and LJN re-designed them to not look real, but the damage was done, and they were bought out by Acclaim, shutting down their toy division to focus on video games.

Takashi never returned did she?

Sucks because Arino wanted her to visit again and they even had the king message say that too.

I wonder how Abe feels when Arino beats him at bike games. I also wonder why they feel the need to bring up Abe's past every single time.

Yuuri Matsumura is the qtiest AD and there's nothing you can do about it.

>> No.2318787

Has there been any other female AD's that have played the game for Arino?

Watanaba was an AD for events, And Itou never touched the game. And who was the girl for the Earthbound episode?

That's Itou though.

I doubt he's to beaten up over it because they are just games and not the real thing. Granted I feel like the staff is intimidated by Abe because of his past and presence. (I.E. how he just manhandles Nakayama whenever they do a segment together. Or Arino profusely apologizing when he beat Abe at the bike game.)

I wonder if they made her eat to get all that footage, I mean in all her early footage, it was just her eating. You'd think she'd become a little self conscious over it all.

Or she just doesn't care, so more power to her.

That wasn't ego masturbation at all.

I mean it MIGHT be the case that the rest of the show was even more boring, but I'm dubious.

Was it because all the episodes weren't subbed, or they just weren't memorable?

Junpei Takahashi is the guy with the cardigans. Most of his episodes are subbed and pretty memorable. He's very skilled and tended to pick difficult but fun games for Arino.

Male Itou still has a bunch of unsubbed episodes. He didn't really stand out in the ones I've seen.

Where can I find the original episodes that are on the kotaku dvds? I remember having clock tower subbed on my old hard drive.
