Quality thread, /v/ro!

It was initially planned as a Mario game, then got turned into Doki Doki Panic, which was then turned into what it was supposed to be the whole time: a Mario game.

This. It was originally intended to be a Mario game. That's why the physics felt vaguely Mario-esque, because the engine was built to be used for a Mario game.

it is though.

It's Miyamoto's favorite mario game, in fact.
And it's the game where many recurring enemies originated from. Like Birdo, Bob-ombs, Shy Guys, Snifits, ninjis.

3D world was essentially a sequel to it, the sprixies resemble the subcon fairies.

everyone who says it's not a real mario game is retarded and should promptly kill themselves. I am 100% serious.

doki doki panic was largely in part designed by miyamoto, and he incorporated a lot of the design elements that he intended originally to include in a super mario bros followup game, the main one being vertical based platforming.

Of course not. This is 4chan, the lifeblood of which is pretending to be stupid and arguing with others also pretending to be stupid. OP knew everything you just said, as did most of the anons replying. Some people think it's funny both to pretend to be a moron and also watch people who think they possess arcane knowledge step up to correct them.

You can even argue it added one fundamental mechanic, namely picking up your enemies. In SMB1 you could only stomp koopas and then kick them, in SMB3 and onwards you could also pick them up and throw them. This was used even more in Super Mario World where you could pick up and throw keys and whatnot.

SMW is also my favorite Mario game (and I played SMB3 first, and loved it, but I like SMW even more), so it doesn't really surprise me. SMW feels like the magnum opus of the Mario series.
