2236529 No.2236529 [Reply] [Original]

Launching the Smasher edition.

>What is SaGa?
It's a Jrpg series produced by Akitoshi Kawazu back in the early Final Fantasy days, however it differs from most other Jrpg series by being more Wrpg oriented, it's non-linear, with multiple main characters, multiple endings and very unusual mechanics based on classic Tabletop RPGs
>What are the games?
The first SaGa games are known in the west as Final Fantasy Legends, so chances are you played those in your childhood on ye olde brick GB, then there is the Romancing SaGa trilogy on the SNES, the two SaGa Frontier titles on the PS One and Minstrel Song(a remake of the first Romancing SaGa) and Unlimited: Saga on the PS2.
>What are the games I can play in English
All the FFL titles were localized, same with the PS One and PS2 titles, there is also an english patch for Romancing SaGa 3 but unfortunately the first two titles are still in Japanese only, though there are already translation projects in the works.

Whats the actual story behind saga 2? Like I love the shit out of the game but now that I think about it I dont understand it. You have to gather the Magi so the gods can't do evil with them? But after you kill apollo who really gives a shit about magi?

No one because Arsenal is triggered and you gotta destroy it or anything will be toast.

Story wasn't really one of SaGa's best points.

oh I guess if arsenal was triggered by all the shit going on that makes enough sense for me

>> No.2236742

>>2236671
In the beginning the story is simply gather all the magi and stuff, of course you also have to fight demons like Ashura again so it's pretty clear the world is a bit fucked, after you get to Apollo though the power of Magi suddenly causes Arsenal to awaken and think "shit just got real, it's too late to save anything".

That's roughly a synthesys of SaGa 2's story, of course if you wanna more particular there are also the Goddesses and such but that's mostly flavor stuff that doesn't really add much depth.

SaGa 3 had a sligthly more interesting story though.

Julian has great growth and he's good with swords and martial arts, but the best one is probably>>2240334 due to his insane sword waza table which allows him to learn the best techs very fast, he also has slightly better stats for swordfighting compared to Julian.
For females it's either Ellen or Katarina, I would suggest you play as Katarina first because she's the only character who isn't recruitable by anyone, she's also extremely good with Great Swords making her one of the best candidates for the Ice Sword later on, probably the best female main gameplay wise. Ellen is a beast with Martial Arts and Axes and she has pretty decent growth as well.

Harid is as greedy as a J... uh a Mercenary, and there's this hidden counter when asking for better/rewards in certain quests raises the "Greed counter."

Go past a certain point and you lock yourself out of a certain quest because your MC will automatically ask the quest giver for a reward and he'll get offended about it. Harid starts really close to that danger point although you can avoid it by reading an FAQ in advance.

Sarah is kind of strange because she's a main character who gets taken out of the party near the final battle, making her the only character who can play that battle with Commander Mode. Commander Mode being kind of an interesting way to play the game but I don't know if anyone should play it as a first

>Is Unlimited a good place to start?
Absolutely no, Unlimited is the hardest game in the series and it will make you hate the games, try SaGa Frontier first as it's very similar in concept to the original GB trilogy.

If you can deal with Frontier move onto the Romancing trilogy bar 2 because that is a very hard and unforgiving game, Frontier 2 and MinSon on PS2 are mid tier in terms of difficulty.

Leave Unlimited for last as again, it's a very complex game and it has many things that are wildly different from the rest of the series in terms of design, it's a great game but it's not for everyone at all.

>> No.2245250

I remember Saga Frontier 1 being hard as balls when I first played it. It's really easy until it isn't. I really wanted to play it, then dropped it because I couldn't finish any stories.

A few years later I picked it up again and went to finish the game from left to right. Started with Lute who has the most bare bones story of all the characters, and this time I did it right. After that, most other stories were pretty easy though it irks me that you kind of have to build the same builds with every character to actually be able to beat the game.

I played it intensively and extensively, I can safely say it has the better growth and battle system of every SaGa game ever conceived so far. The amount of depth is amazing and no other game in the series can compare.

>What's the best SaGa game?
It depends on what you're looking for.

If you want crazy shit mixed together and a lot of charm SaGa Frontier is the best.
If you like experimenting with non linearity, a pseudo class system and the old school balls to the wall difficulty Romancing SaGa 2 is what you're looking for.
If you want a good story and characters Frontier 2 will give you that at the cost of non linear gameplay.
If you want classic medieval fantasy with all the charm and system of SaGa, RomaSaGa 1/Minstrel Song and RomaSaGa 3 are your best bet.
If you want literal hell difficulty and complexity, classy music and Demonbane shenanigans Unlimited: Saga is good for you.

Bear in mind that while they do share some common elements they are also very different games in concepts and ideas.
>>2245295

Depends who you ask. Some like Final Fantasy Legend II the most, others like one of the games from the Romancing SaGa trilogy, others like SaGa Frontier 1 or SaGa Frontier 2. Field skills were nice, especially in Unlimited where they became a staple.

Though he said that this time there will be less focus on formations and sparking, which makes me a bit worried.
He already decided to drop standard formations since Romancing SaGa 3, I wonder if it wil be like Unlimited or other games such as Frontier 2 where Formations are predetermined and have less impact on the actual battle, but making the game less focused on sparking skills is puzzling, Unlimited already dropped it hard, I don't understand whether he's making a comparison between his latest games or classic Romancing SaGa,

Well sparking skills is like the same thing. To land on the tile though it takes timing and also getting the skill panels for the skills. The higher level the skill panel the more tiles you get on the reel. Once you get in the groove you will be landing on the techs you want.

I haven't gotten that far since I played maybe five or ten minutes but there's a few things that could use fixing:
-headmaster's speech will repeat itself if you go back inside the main room (may be on purpose)

-some walls you can walk through

-the red mushroom's only attack is the paralyze all move, which can lead to a loop of it repeatedly paralyzing everyone and the party being stuck since their turn is skipped

OP here, big update for the thread.
I finished checking all the stuff I had, I regret to say that I happen to have quite a few corrupted files, seems my external HD had some problems.
However, I managed to save most of the stuff I had and I uploaded it all for you guys, unfortunately I lost my Minstrel Song and Unlimited SaGa FLAC albums, I'll see if I can find them again, lost Takrockers' DECA as well and the first two Rebirth Albums by Itoken ;_;

http://pastebin.com/FqQHPVDM

On the bright side, I put all the files from the Biolab's scan of Essence of SaGa Frontier together in one convenient folder, converted them as well so you don't have to rename them all like I had to, unfortunately a few pages are either empty or have a resolution for ants, one in particular is on Fuse's short novel which made me kinda mad as I was reading bits and pieces of it while I was checking things.
All the files I uploaded work and sound flawlessly.
Anyway, if you happen to come along some good stuff you want to share with the rest of the thread, ring a bell and I'll add it to the pastebin.

By the way, Fuse's novel and the Essence book in general have some nice bits of info.
One that is particularly interesting is that Fuse is just a codename, like Doll and Silence, Fuse's full codename/Nickname is actually Crazy Fuse, there's no info on Fuse's true name, Blue however points out that Fuse is one of IRPO's top elite patrol in the novel.
Other funny things regarding him is that Fuse's personality and design was originally based on Jackie Chan, that was mentioned by Kawazu himself during a 100 Q&A session, it was answered on a particular question regarding the Shield Card quest where somebady asked why they had to pick that flower on Mosperiburg, Kawazu said that originally that quest was supposed to show a final cutscene with Fuse's Boss giving the flower to the IRPO receptionist in a comedic romance attempt.

Found your problem.

Still, most pre-Minstrel Song SaGa games are pretty obtuse - depending on who you play in SaGa Frontier for example, if you're playing completely blind you can do things like stumble onto Lute's final dungeon within 5 minutes of the game starting where you'll be torn apart.

Truth to be told SaGa as a series is only pseudo-non linear, the only true non linear games are Romancing SaGa and Romancing SaGa 2.

But yeah, it's kinda ironic that one of the series that pioneered non linearity and other weird stuff in the JRPG genre doesn't get recognition, of course it's not like other minor games like Inindo or Metal Max do either...

I'm saying you don't know what Random Encounter means.

Random Encounters are enemies that

1)Are not visible on the map and thus unavoidable
2)Might be rendered null by certain skills/abilities that do not rely on the player's mechanical input skills
3)Have usually no fixed number inside a dungeon

SaGa has visible enemies that move on the map and are avoidable.
Fixed encounters are enemies that have been written to appear in a certain location and/or position and/or fixed time.

And all classic JRPG encounters are "fixed" as they have only a reel that stops on a certain set of enemies, it would be extremely chaotic and stupid to do otherwise.
And that regard even most fixed non event encounters in SaGa aren't really fixed as enemies change depending on your BR.

Bows have nice utilities Waza like Beast Hunt or Arrow Rain but they don't really shine in single damage output, Million Dollars and a few other Waza are still very good though.

In RS3 are there hidden stats besides weapon rank and the character's listed attributes that determine how good they are with a weapon?

The only hidden stat that is used to say who's good with which weapon is the innate Waza Spark Table, but since it's much more flexible than it was in the previous two games you just need to know who's generally good with a certain weapon.
Of course there are still a few characters that are considered the best in certain fields, Harid is the best with Swords, Katarina/The Young Boy are the best with Great Swords followed by Wood, Robin/Fat Robin are the best with Rapiers and so on.

>Should I expect any core changes?

SaGa 3 goes back to the FF roots a bit for some things, that is why it's the least favorite GB SaGa, it's not bad but it lacks most crazy stuff the old games had.
Do play it though, there's fun to be had anyway as it's a nice game.

The Romancing SaGa trilogy elaborates on the GB SaGa titles by expanding lives into LPs, more focus on Waza and Magic and adding multiple main characters with the exception of 2, it also changes the scenario to a more traditional medieval fantasy setting though both RomaSaGa 2 and 3 have slight technology elements like Coppelia, the Nachtzweiger or Vanguard.
In that trilogy, RomaSaGa 2 is kind of an oddball as it doesn't have multiple main characters you can choose at the beginning of the game but rather generations of characters you choose throughout the game, it also has a deceivingly simple pseudo job system which is very fun to explore and tinkle with, great characters, the best non linearity in the series and great graphics and music as well.

SaGa Frontier is a love letter to the GB SaGa, races are back, as well as guns and Demons and Sci-fi settings, but it still retains most innovations introduced with the Romancing SaGa series, it is one of the most beloved titles in the franchises mainly due to the incredible charm of characters, stories, setting and music, not to mention the flashy but quick gameplay and all the exploits, even though it's the most unfinished and really easy SaGa game it has a lot of popularity, that alone should give you a good reason to play it.

SaGa Frontier 2 is another oddball in the franchise as it drops nonlinearity in favor of a deeper story, it introduces/reintroduces breakable weapons and a few other things, it's also one of the few SaGa games that don't have a score composed by Itoken, but Hamauzu does his own thing really well and give it a very soothing and romantic soundtrack, the story and characters are great but many people complain about the lack of exploration and the fact that the game is very linear, the graphics are still amazing to this day.

Unlimited is the most hated JRPG in the world as it's extremely convoluted, criptic and balls to the walls hard, definitely leave this for last as it's either love or hate.

Minstrel Song or MinSon is a remake of RomaSaGa 1, it adds a few things and has a complete redesign of the characters, a new score and lots of new mechanics, really good game overall.

To give you an idea of the popularity of the various games, here's the poll results of this years' anniversary.

Well, it depends on what you're looking for, SaGa and SaGa Frontier were heavily inspired by the pop culture of their times, if you saw movies like Wicked City or Cyber City you'll see a lot of elements that SaGa predated, man in suits that fight demons with flashy kung fu and big guns in a sci-fi/modern setting, magic and guns, mutants etc, they were more a product of their time.

In terms of design elements, lately there has been a surge in non linear games with multiple characters, Leggend Of Legacy for the 3DS is a tribute to SaGa and has a lot of similar mechanics and designs, but that's a bit cheating because most of the poeple who made that game are former staff of the old SaGa teams.

To actually make it legendary being infinite use and not just another ammo-based "strike group" weapon or spell like the firearms and damage/ailment spells.
Pisses me off though that they STILL didn't add a party-wide heal of any kind or make elixirs and, IIRC, revives available mid-battle.

That said, Masamune is also infinite use now, but it's just about as useful as it was in the original, so it feels a bit less impressive versus Excalibur.
Really, though, it's a nice way to give your humans some sort of value end-game when everyone else is spamming flare or insta-death, and it's not that big of a jump up anyways, since, by the time you get Excalibur anyways, you can buy Arcane items/Philosopher stones anyways, so this just cuts out the need for that.

Also, it may just be my sheer dumb luck, but I got fuck tons of "stone-gaze" and "death-gaze" on my mutants in WSC, where as they're usually just have element or ailment spells in my most recent GB run.

In other news, the "new game plus" is fucking worthless, and only carries the bestiary, which only contains the monsters you've used.

The problem with combos is that even if you know the chaining rules the turn reel might still fuck you over, this was even more emphasized in Unlimited where understanding who would get a turn and when is crucial as there's no combo chaining restrictions anymore, make a wrong chain and you might damage the enemy at the cost of tons of LP on your characters.

But then again, it's not like level 5 combos are really needed, you can make a Glirandly build on your humans and have every stat maxed, abusing mechs' tank builds, putting Suzaku or Mariche in all your mystics slots etc., too many ways to break the game, and there's still even more broken stuff like DSC, Tower, Overdrive...

True, I was replaying Metal Max Returns the other day and the translation is quite questionable even without all the blatant errors.

Though one of the worst offenders in that case might be Rudra no Hihou translation, that even messed up the Mantra mechanic quite a bit.
>I couldn't stand the official versions of the SaGa games
Truth to be told most of the official translations are shit, even thse who are hailed as great works such as Vagrant Story turn out to be completely different in moonrunes, actually, VS might be the best example, on one hand you have a Shakespearian prose in english, on the other hand you have a fairly plain Japanese text.
Very puzzling, but then again, even in the best case scenario you'll still lose a lot of colour and flavour text when you translate from Japanese, that's one of the languages that shows very well the limits of translation.

Literally copypasted from an old post on Gamefaqs.
>in japanese syllables like ka ki ku ke ko are all one character in length and the mantras are phonetic, with only 6 characters in length maximum.

in the Aeon Genesis patch the character limit is increased to 12, but you can frequently make more efficient mantras because certain strings of consonants will trigger the old mantra patterns from the japanese version, or because of things like "n" sounds taking up a single space out of the twelve slots, while in japanese "N" is considered a full syllable (JIN for example would take 2/6 slots instead of 3/12)

Interesting stuff isn't it?

Frontier 2 is similar but the decisions in one scenario do not have effects on other scenarios unfortunately, it would have been pretty damn good though.

Well, maybe Kawazu will do something similar in a future SaGa games, after all he was the Director for Rudra as well, unsurprisingly.
It's a pity he's such an underrated director/designer in the west, he's pretty much the dad of FF together with Sakaguchi, it was he who introduced concepts such as elemental weaknesses in JRPG and much more.

I heard the director of Rudra got fired from Square, though? Ended up making the Kamen Rider series?

Surely that isn't the same guy who did SaGa?

Really?
The Director and Designer is Kawazu though, no doubts on that.

Evidently Rudra didn't do so hot in Japan either, despite the unique premise. Rumor is Square didn't take too kindly to that and gave the guy the boot.

Apparently so, just like most games who tried to do something different.

Never heard anything about that, but again, since it was Kawazu, and he's still in I find it hard to believe.

Not entirely /vr/, but still mostly relevant.

Just started a file in this today. It's nice seeing one of my favorites from so many years ago done justice.

I feel like it's taking a lot longer for my esper to get any stats or new skills than it did in the original.

>I feel like it's taking a lot longer for my esper to get any stats or new skills than it did in the original.

The remakes have a few rebalance tweaks, some bosses gained new resistances and some abilities got nerfed.
Except the new arranged soundtrack they're pretty good.

Glitchy how? I haven't noticed any spelling errors or save corruption. Latest version of the english patch is I think 2.11

>> No.2305572

>>2303971
The 2.11 is definitely good. I remember having a prior version that had the party chat and some other things still in JP, which is what made me look up newer revisions. 2.11 seems complete, though I'm not far in at present.

>>2303741
You're absolutely right, based on what I read. Since I posted that, I've gotten a few stat boosts on my esper, but have yet to learn any new spells. At least I know now what I have to do to get them, and some basic algorithms. All the copious amounts of useful knowledge I have for FFL2 is only partially handy for this go around, which is actually rather nice. It makes it feel like a new experience on some levels.

It does, the new changes are not half bad really, they make the game a bit more challenging and balanced than the GB version.

OK, so the SaGa patch/fan translation scene always seemed to be nearly as clusterfucked as the Fire Emblem one. That being said; do all of the "classic" (SaGa+Romancing SaGa) ones have patches now? Last time I looked into this it was unbelievably difficult to get a bead on things and I think I finally came to the conclusion that certain games were simply not available in English without either playing a shitty bug-ridden patch or an inferior version of the installment in question.

Basically Magi runs the world and if you collect them all, you'll be a super god.

People who collect Magi get powers and become gods, but not THE God. You got Gods who create their own little empires like Venus, Gods who are somewhat altruistic and want to see new Gods arise like Odin and Gods who want to become THE God, like Apollo.
