That's why I build the thing, to experience it like I did back in 94.

I waited and waited years for Duke Forever, and in the end we got that.. well console shooter.
so just playing the mod on the ol' dos computer would kinda reignite that feel of back then ya know.

Hell I'd play Brutal Doom on my dos machine if it wasn't so taxing.

I think the best maps the community has made tend to be single-level maps, but I enjoyed the Duke Hard "campaign" more than the DNF one.

DNF has a lot more fancy tricks and added features, whereas Duke Hard is a really solid set of well-made, short, action-packed levels. If you can't tell from the name the premise is that you're moving up floor by floor of a skyscraper a la Die Hard.

The fuck are you talking about, autismo? I said you were autistic because you're refusing to play a mod that was released in 2013 because it doesn't have support for MS-DOS. THAT'S autistic.

>An unusual focus on pieces. Younger children with autism often focus on parts of toys, such as the wheels on a car, rather than playing with the entire toy. (unusual focus on the technology centered around the retro hardware required to play retro games)

>Preoccupation with certain topics. For example, older children and adults may be fascinated by video games, trading cards, or license plates. (fascinated with retro hardware and the games released on them)

>A need for sameness and routines. For example, a child with autism may always need to eat bread before salad and insist on driving the same route every day to school. (constantly needing to play retro games on the hardware it was released on)

>Do those DOS compatible episodes work with Eduke32?

Of course, the contrary can't be said though, obviously.

The thing is though, depending on the kind of fucked up install the episode/mods comes with, you may have trouble installing it to run with EDuke32. Usually it's not a problem, for episodes/mods, you should have a .grp file and maybe a bunch of other files, put them into a "newfolder" in your EDuke32 directory and select that "newfolder" in the "custom game content directory" part of the startup window of EDuke32.

But some older episodes or mods may come with some weird dos installers that can be trouble, but I don't think it's the case with the ones I mentionned.

WGRealms 2 and AMC TC are standalone and you don't have to worry about anything. They're great total conversions but they have little to do with DN3D anymore unlike say, DNF mod, or Duke Hard.

Hope you enjoy Duke Hard

What is the best sourceport of D3D? Does the megaton edition come with the WADs or whatever they're called?

Megaton is pretty bad. Forced 32 bit visuals, fake widescreen supports (actually zooms in...), glitches that didn't exist in the original and the ones that did exist are more likely to happen, etc

Megaton does come with all 3 official add-ons. However in multiplayer the levels were modified for "better multiplayer support", but not done in a very good way...

Best sourceport would be EDuke32, unless you want to play online. EDuke32's online is broken atm.

The easiest way to play online is Megaton, so it's good for that. However the online is laggy in that.

Mapster32, the level editor that comes with EDuke32, is the best one. There are tons of new features that make mapping faster, easier and more convenient.

However there is no such thing as a level editor like Doom Builder. Mapster32 still uses the same old interface, based on the same old obscure key combinaisons that you have to learn.

I'm not NESfag and I liked Duke Hard quite a bit. They aren't the greatest levels I've ever seen, but the smallish sizes means you can blast through as a fast pace, and there's decent variety. The boss fight is pretty intense too.

And it's nowhere near being "pretty bad", the only thing "pretty bad" about it is the Vsync issue. Unless you're a nostalgia-fag (and living up to your name), there's no reason NOT to like megaton edition, especially when it COMES with Duke Nukem Classic, so there's literally absolutely no excuse NOT to like it.

In fact, I just tried it out, and compared to the original, Megaton Edition is actually zoomed OUT, the sound quality is superior, with an updated soundtrack. As for the original, there are 2 key differences, there either seems to be more shadows, or that shadows are more noticeable. Darkness seemed a lot denser in the original. The second difference is that sprites (namely enemies) seem a lot more "fat" or "wide".

You're saying there is no reason not to like it and then list things that are wrong with (like the fucked up shadows)

Saying it's zoomed out is wrong though. In widescreen mode it's zoomed in to fit the screen, which is not true widescreen support because you actually see less instead of seeing more.
Unless they actually put in some real widescreen since last time I checked, but I doubt that.

As for enemies being "wider", sounds like you're not playing in the correct aspect ratio...

But opengl does come with an issue with sprites (and namely enemies) : the true 3D makes them look a lot more flat, especially when you look all the way up or down.
DN3D was never meant to be played in true 3D, if it had been true 3D to begin with, they probably wouldn't have used sprites.
In some situations, when an enemy is high above or below you, the true 3D is also cheating, because the player is able to see and shoot enemies and things that are high up or way below him, that he wouldn't be able to see and shoot in the original and shouldn't be.

Not offering the possibility to play the game in 8-bit, 2.5D video mode, is just lazy. Lazy is the word that describes best Megaton anyway.
As for saying it comes with the original in dosbox, that's not an excuse. People are paying for a sourceport, if they wanted to play the original in dosbox, they'd dust off an old copy or buy the gog version.

This is on top of what I mentionned, like the glitches and the modified add-on maps. But there are also other, a bit more technical, things that are broken in Megaton. For instance sprites behind another semi-transparent sprite will tend to flicker. A lot. Just an example.

There is no honestly reason to play Megaton over EDuke32 unless it's to play multiplayer.
EDuke32 has its share of issues, but they are VERY minor compared to Megaton. And it's free.

>You're saying there is no reason not to like it and then list things that are wrong with (like the fucked up shadows)

The shadows aren't "fucked up", so I have no idea what you're talking about here. In fact, I just realized it was because I was playing with shadows on "fast" instead of "accurate", which darkens/adds more of them. Still, it's not quite like the original (shadows were more pixelated), though that's probably due to the rendering differences between the original game and its OpenGL counter-part. Which is better is entirely subjective.

>Saying it's zoomed out is wrong though. In widescreen mode it's zoomed in to fit the screen, which is not true widescreen support because you actually see less instead of seeing more.

Pic related, in-game screenshot. It's far from "zoomed in".

>especially when you look all the way up or down

This has always been a problem with 2.5D shooters, regardless of rendering methods.

>they probably wouldn't have used sprites.

Seeing as Quake was the first FPS to ever use 3D modeled enemies (came out before Goldeneye and Turok), and the technology was still somewhat new at the time, no, they probably wouldn't have.

>Not offering the possibility to play the game in 8-bit

Why would they do that when it's not even an 8 bit game? Not even DOOM was 8 bit.

>People are paying for a sourceport

Well then they're idiots that just got fucking robbed, since source-ports are free. What they were paying for with DN3D was an "updated" compilation of Duke Nukem 3D.

"Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition is the definitive compilation of the landmark first-person shooter that includes enhanced versions of Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition and three unique expansion packs as well as the original version of the classic game."

Says it crystal clear on the store page.

"widescreen".

as for the shadows
> Which is better is entirely subjective.

The kind of shading dynamics and contrasts they made and wanted was with the 8bit renderer in mind. With Megaton's renderer, the contrats are not the same. The shadows not as dense, everything a lot more smooth and uniform, you can see farther in the distance, etc etc
It may be a matter of opinion which you like best, but it's not a matter of opinion to know which is the intended one, and which it is not.

Also it does not just come from the fact that it's an opengl renderer. EDuke32's opengl renderer is much more faithful to the original as far as shadows are concerned. It's funny because Megaton actually used EDuke32's code to improve the shadows (it used to be much worse).

>Why would they do that when it's not even an 8 bit game? Not even DOOM was 8 bit.

I don't even know what to answer to that...

Look, I've been following the advance of DN3D sourceport for nearly 14 years. Everything from the first DOS EDuke, to Jonof, etc
This is not just "my" opinion. Everyone in the DN3D community knows and will tell you Megaton is a major step back as far as DN3D sourceports are concerned, that it's lazy, full of glitches. Basically everything I've told you and much more.

In comparison your level of expertise is that of someone who plays a DOS game in 4/3 resolution stretched fullscreen on his widescreen and who thinks "the game makes the enemies wider".

Stop it.

>> No.2278414

>And built-in Steam Workshop support.

As for the workshop, it only supports a small percentage of community content. Anything with custom art, sound, coding (etc), will require manual installion (= not supported by the workshop itself).
It also doesn't support mods or episodes.
So it only supports maps, and it only supports vanilla and jonof compatible maps. There are tons of maps that EDuke32 supports, which megaton doesn't. Others which will be glitchy unless you modify them etc

And the maps on there are only a small percentage of what was ever made. I know because I have uploaded more than 50 maps myself, some of my favourites but also some I made, either alone or with other mappers (2 of which you can find in the top2 "top rated all time")

in other words it's very minor compared to what one can do outside of the workshop.

And Megaton's modding support (outside of the workshop) is also very minor compared to what one can do with EDUke32.
