We dont talk about fighting games enough. Use this thread for discussion of all fighters. Tekken, Soul Caliber, Mortal Kombat, Samurai Showdown, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, which is your favorite?

>> No.2270507

Namco fighting games were always my favorite. With those I felt like as long as you knew the moves you could challenge anyone where a game like Street Fighter requires WAY more strategy. I just have more fun playing Tekken or Soul Calibur with my bros

I remember, as a kid, I used to go to the Boys & Girls Club when school was out for the season, and it had a cabinet with Samurai Shodown II, World Fighters II -- I think -- and Aero Fighters II.

I watched a lot of people play SS and saw one person beat World Fighters over the years.

Good times.

Each one has their place.
Anyone who denies that street fighter will always be the most relevant competitively is a fucking idiot.
Mortal kombat is reserved for nostalgia fags and bros that just wanna play "A BUTTON MASHER" and theres nothing wrong with that.

If theres one game that hasnt gotten the love it deserves, its definetely soul cali 5. 4 was supposed to be the final one, but people made petitions that actually earned the devs attention, and 4 maintained a fairly large competitive scene YEARS after devs stopped caring about it. It was literally created due to fan demand, which is based as fuck. And it has in my opinion the greatest character editor in any game. Hey, wanna change your dudes height and actually have it reflected in hitboxes? Go ahead. Its my favorite fighting game to play, cause matches can be pretty goofy and has easy as hell inputs.

Street Fighter II (any of the versions) and KoF '98 are my favorites followed by Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 and SNK vs. Capcom - Match of the Millennium. After that it's probably Samurai Shodown 1&2, Real Bout Special, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Garou - Mark of the Wolves.

Some criminally underrated titles include Joy Mech Fight and Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu.

Modern games aren't the only ones being played competitively either, even if they're more popular. There's plenty of people that play Vampire Savior competitively for example, in fact I saw a tournament stream of it not too long ago.

A lot of fighting game knowledge translate into other fighting games as well, so I wouldn't say it's useless knowledge either way. At least not if you're looking to get good at video games. Which is probably actually useless, but fuck it it's fun.

Hello, i've recently started getting into SF II: The New Challengers and i have a few questions.

First, does the CPU have higher priority by default?

I've noticed that air-to-air it's very unlikely to beat the CPU, let's say i'm playing Zangief versus Dee Jay. In air-to-air he ALWAYS beats my HK with his MK, but then i've started playing Dee Jay and surprise! He will beat my MK with HK or MK.
The same happens with many other characters, even when i'm playing Blanka, which is said to be the character with the highest priority jumping normals, the CPU will beat me in the air, this is very annoying.

Second, how do i deal more damage in multi-hit normal throws(blanka's, balrog's, dhalsim's...)?

Third, how to perform combos?

As a former KoF player i'm used to the standard "jumping heavy attack -> standing heavy attack -> standing light attack -> special", but i do not know how it works in SF II.
A guide or a chart are very welcome.

Pic related, who i'm trying to main.

this is exactly the kind of attitude that has ruined (for me at least) modern gaming.

no one type of genre or type of game is anymore legitimate than another. you're allowed to have your preferences and obviously some games are of lesser quality than others but 2D fighters have just as much of a point or lack there of as any other video game.

the biggest mistake the gaming industry ever made in its infancy (imo) was turning its back on 2D once 3D became a viable medium. its been proven time and time again that not everything works in 3D and numerous classic series that tried to make the transition have been floating in a sea of mediocrity for 2 decades now.
then we have two whole genres (beat em ups, and shumps) that in their hay day were massive successes that now outside of their niche audiences are near extinct genres today.

as long as the games are fun who gives a fuck?
fuck that watered down bullshit you call modern gaming.

How do you make a SHMUP or Beat em up that you can charge 60 dollars for?

The big games these days have bigger budgets then ever, and they have to to keep up with graphical demands, and they all require very competent programmers because tons of games have incredibly complex systems. Look at Assassins Creed Unity for instance.

>Really good graphics
>Very complex free running system
>Good voice acting and sound design

Thats just a -small- fraction of the complexity. I'm not saying AC:U is an amazing game, but its competent.

How do you sell a simple beat em up? You can do it with smaller teams and it can be moderately successful like Double Dragon Neon but its definitely more Niche.

>>2271070
Its actually easier to make, rig and texture a 3D model then it is to make a sprite sheet with very fluid animations, especially considering when multiple outfits are usually a staple in fighters now its way easier to just change that kind of stuff then it is to completely revise the sprite sheet. Which is why a lot of the alternative outfits are simply recolours in the sprite sheet days.

not all games need to be 60 dollars. even the "big budget" games costing 60 bucks is a joke.

how is it that a movie can cost 100+ milliion dollars to make, cost 8 bucks to see in theaters, and cost 10-20-30 dollars to buy on dvd/blu ray and still turn a bigger profit than the 10 million dollar game that cost 60 bucks new?

i hope to god we as a human race get over being so wowed by computer graphics some day. it wont ever happen but i can still dream.

beat em' ups aren't niche, in fact its such a simple and easy idea to grasp that it deserve a presence in today's gaming market.

the only reason why we are lead to believe its niche is because of posters/people like the one i original quoted lead you to believe that its a negative thing, or "hipster" to enjoy things outside of whats popular and that is so fucked. sorry, im an individual, and as that individual i will enjoy my 2D hipster shit over assassins rehash anyday.

You misunderstand.
You aren't the average video game player. Its highly likely the average video game player has never even played a beat em up and was raised on games like Halo, Kingdom Hearts, and Super Smash Bros Melee.

They are few and far between because guess what? Other genres sell better. Other genres have more potential to be interesting. Most of them have high difficulty as its replay value because they must be beaten in a single sitting and you will die frequently.

Facts are facts. Beat em ups are going the way of the dodo just like point and clicks did.

For the most part, the model you are describing for Hollywood is not accurate. More and more, you are seeing lower budget movies ($50 million and less) with the occasional tentpole. Studios are much more likely to risk less money on a bunch of cheaper movies, hence the resurgence in inexpensive genre trash like Oculus, Oujia, Paranormal Activity, etc. Even with larger budget movies, there is an expectation of more profit from longtail sales in DVD/BR, rentals, streaming, etc.

This is not the case with games, which often make up to 90% of their sales in the first month. There are little to no other revenue streams for games, no longtail sales. The market as we knew it has been totally fractured by phones and tablets and their pricing model. Most people only buy one or two new games a year, even stuff like AC and GTA have to assume that they'll sell millions before they can turn a profit.

If anything, it's led us to have a healthy new interest in so called indie games and smaller experiences. (I wish this consumer mindset would transfer to books but that's another story). Still, younger consumers are by and large unwilling to pay for content these days. When everything is assumed to be free, you can't even depend on 0.99 cent sales. SNK now makes pachinko, and Capcoms biggest games are on mobile devices.

You dug your grave, now lie there...

versatility =/= better. im not saying you need to abolish 3D. infact i like a lot of 3D games but if you read my point earlier you'd see that i was saying that not every title works in 3D.

i mean sure you can have all the complexity and camera angles you need in your 3D games but it means fuck-all when the last 50 castlevania games have made a complete mockery of the once great series while the 2D handheld games are still better in every aspect

Supposedly they colluded with guide manufacturers to leave the movelists out in order to make players buy guides. It's especially bad considering that they didn't pull that with the Darkstalkers Collection that Alpha Anthology was based on, it had in-game movelists.

>THAT'S what Sodom is making fun of. It has NOTHING to do with America.

Calm down a bit.

I think a lot of the humor regarding Sodom is about how he is obsessed with Japan (mostly regarding martial arts and japanese culture, not anime and manga) but he can't properly write in japanese (for example the kanji he uses on his outfit, or how he writes "Sodomu" on his truck, they all have grammatical errors). They make fun of him for that, the paradox of being obsessed with japan but not being able to properly speak japanese. I don't think they believe every foreigner who likes Japan is foolish. Sodom just happens to be american and he has that weird awesome samurai/football outfit/armor.

I've also seen several people claim Sodom is homosexual, but is there any actual source for that?
I get that "Sodom" might be a reference to the biblical cities of sodom and gomorrah, but I don't think that automatically makes him a gay character.

This. The AI in just about every fighting game will read your inputs.

The very frame you input an attack in, the AI knows, and they can respond with a faster attack. There is no priority, they simply attacked you first.

They don't do this all the time, obviously, but it can happen with a very high degree of frequency.

And while we're on the subject, the AI also isn't hindered by having to input motions to use attacks. So while you might be able to tell if someone is charging, or about to use a super when you're fighting a human, the AI can just whip out whatever move instantly.

Fighting game AI is infamously cheap, and overall very poorly designed. And it hasn't changed much at all because there's simply no one clamoring for better fighting game AI.

Some games aren't too bad though. But SF2? One of the worst offenders.

My favorite fighters are capcom fighters. Street Fighter iss overall the best fighter, it's the sweet spot between fun/simplicity and depth/skill ceiling. Marvel vs capcom is a geat derivative, although infinite combos are bullshit. Powerstone 3 needs to happen because it could easily compete for Smash bros as best party fighter.

Next is Smash bros. it's a fighter and a damn fun one at that.

Namco fighters are cool, it's easier for someone who knows nothing to win but still requires skill.

SNK fighters are rad, but at mostly they're just street fighter with a smaller following and more complicated inputs which disincentives anyone to put too much time in.

Mortal Kombat is pretty lame, I'll play it tho.

Also has anyone played pic related? I liked it

If it had "retro" graphics maybe it would be more feasible, but HD hand-drawn art running at Skullgirls framerates with a gazillion moves per character takes fucking forever, way longer than throwing some models and animations together. It's the same way with animated TV/movies.

No wonder the FGC is always so bitter, they have to play games they hate because they're the only thing anyone plays

Pretty good and underrated game. Preston Ajax fights with wires and bombs and manages to look absolutely nothing like Doctrine Dark.
But they ripped off Ryo Sakazaki's moves for Tetsuo Kato.

Typically it's true that there's no actual "priority" value in the game, that it' just a matter of one move having better hitboxes than another. However, there are some games that actually do have a priority system in their code. Third Strike being one example. In that game, a higher strength move will beat out a weaker one (Light<Medium<Hard<Special, etc.) even if both characters' hitboxes are overlapping each others hurtboxes simultaneously. Alpha 3 also has a similar system where stronger moves can beat out weaker ones, but strangely enough there's also random chance involved. Meaning sometimes a light and a hard will trade, other times the hard will beat out the light.

Footsies, footsies, footsies. And if they turtle up, add some throws to the mix. Know the range on all of your moves. That is the key to being good with Vega.

Except in Super Turbo. Just walldive your ass off in that game.

You guys are all stupid idiots. All of you who are saying that Sodom was given his name either to make fun of faggots, or due to biblical connotations are wrong. Sodom was named after the German thrash metal band, many other characters in the final fight series were named after bands ( ex."Poison" and "Roxy" like the shitty glam bands, "Damnd" after The Damned, Axl and slash etc etc.) Those gooks just thought it would be cool to name character in their game. after their favorite band
