When was the last time you've used a link cable with someone? How do you find people to play with? Also memory talk is allowed.

I'm 19 and it's impossible to find people my age that even owned a GB or GBC, nevermind are into retro gaming. I've never played through a link cable with anyone but it sounds fun

>> No.2270348

Last time I used one was probably in 2003. I worked tech for the high school theater and me and a couple friends all linked our GBAs together to play Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland.

Why would you own a GBC?
I can see now if you're trying to play older games. You got to be pretty determined to play how it was back then on a GBC instead of playing it on a SNES or GC. Neat that a younger person is trying play on a GBC.

Don't give up but that's going to be a continuing problem with these retro games. We're a small group. It's going to depend a lot on where you live.

That said all I ever used the link cable for was Pokemon.

At my university(in Alabama) there's like 10 people who are fairly active in 2nd gen pokemon competitively. I was pretty seriously into it when it was new and I was like 10. I paid someone like 50 bucks to get me some pokes so I could join in. When I joined them a year or so ago there were 6 people. we get like 4-6 random people too every time too. we all throw in $5 and winner and second place split it. Showdown and other stuff has kind of killed in-person Pokemon but it's good for kicks and I usually win and grab some cash so that's nice.

We've discussed moving to sims every couple of meetings for the past half a year though and I think we're headed that way based on popular opinion. I'm strongly in the staying on GB camp, but whatever.

Once we go sim I don't think I'll ever use a cable again.

I don't even remember. Probably in 2002-2003? If it counts, it was around last year when I bought another GBA and a Link cable so that I could trade some Pogeymans from Blue to Crystal or vice versa, just to teach them generation exclusive TMs. I sent Gen 1 pokemon from Crystal to Blue and loaded them up with Protein/HP Up/etc, then traded them back.

I use link cables quite a lot. I grew up with retro games and so did all my friends and we all have kids. And I have a huge collection. So when I throw a party and 30 people show up there's a lot of gaming going on. You know how some TVs have Picture-in-Picture capability? Same concept, except besides just having 2nd source inside a small window, the TV allows them side by side.

I used to do that but PIP/split screen on my new TV sucks hairy balls and only lets you do a few retarded combinations . So I got a quad which just solves that whole problem and, unlike the TV function, seems to have no lag. And the new TV is 3D so I can use dual play to avoid screen peeking. It's also great for 4 players teams of two so you can see your team mates screen but not the other teams. And it's passive 3D so you can sit real close for muh scanlines. huehue.

I remember one time my brother, sister and I were playing on that purple game boy color, but then as were mid level in some game, it was time for dinner. They tasked me with hiding it, but me being a dumb 6 year old left it on my person and dropped it mid dinner. Not retro, but I've only been able to play GBA multiplayer by owning an original GBA, a GBA SP, the Game Boy Player for Gamecube, a third-party 4-way cable, owning single-cart multiplayer games like Mario Kart and Bomberman, and owning two copies of the multi-cart multiplayer Advance Guardian Heroes (spent $20 total for 2 CiB copies).

In other words, your best bet to playing link cable GB and GBC games is by owning multiple systems and multiple copies of certain games.

It's not possible to connect two GBAs playing a GBC game using a GBA link cable, is it? I was always of the understanding that you had to use a GB/GBC cable proper with GB/GBC games, even if you were using GBAs to do it.

Also, can a four-player arrangement of GBA link cables (like for four swords or mario advance) work as a 4-player adapter (for wave race and bomberman), or do you have to use the GB 4 player adapter?
