So how good exactly is the PS1 when it comes down to CD audio? And I mean of course the first batch of PS1's.

Supposedly the D-A converters are tits and some people have used them as CD players for this reason. I've heard this is why the SCPH-1001s were initially so expensive, because Sony hadn't actually come up with a cheaper D-A chip and was using pro grade stuff. I don't know if I believe that.

And anyways, unless digital audio was recorded and digitized well to begin with, it doesn't matter how nice your D-A is. Garbage in, garbage out. Most games of that gen don't have great sounding audio to begin with.

better than compressed cartridge-based audio. the ps1 intro I'm pretty sure was designed to show how high-quality and advanced the audio was, and it did a damn well good job. now it's standard as all consoles use discs. it was probably more of convenience to the devs that they didn't have to compress anything.

The right question would be how good are your speakers? As far as audio playback is concerned, it'll play whatever music CD you put in, but the end result depends on how good your TV speakers are.

Why is everyone on /vr/ these days one of two kinds of idiots?

I've been the most fond of the aware ignorant posters that have come here since the beginning to actually learn about /vr/ but it seems like the amount of dumbass, pretentious advice handed out here has chased those people away for the most part and continues to chase them away.

The answer is yes, like the PS2 as a DVD player and the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, the PS1 offered a good value at release as a CD player (there's a reason the Start and Select buttons are shaped like Play and Stop) and because of its descendant's backward compatibility the PS1 continues to be a good value as a CD player - although only no-budget audiophiles are likely to want a $10 CD player with a wired remote and no integrated display.

You guys really need to stop parroting that shit. It's god damn annoying.
The audio is nothing special out of the box. You need to do mods to it for it to be acceptable to the audiophile crowd. That was years ago. Now not so much.

And good value? What? CDs weren't new and there were plenty of options to play them. It was never marketed as audiophile bullshit you two are parroting.

wait, how the hell are you getting a non-digital source signal INTO your PS?

fidelity is DEFINED as accuracy to source, and the only source available to a PS is digital

>> No.2263582

Its too old to be a good CD player. The audio converters available now are loads better. End of story. Don't use a PSX for listening to CDs. You just need a good digital amplifier.

Who said it was good enough for audiophiles? Nobody ever said the Playstation would replace all of your entertainment equipment. The fact that it could play CDs was a bonus. Maybe you're a babby and can't remember when the Playstation came out.

According to the interwebs, the 5xxx models have the same DAC the 1xxx models did. They also say you need to clean the output with some modding for best sound quality. It's almost as if people see the RCA jacks and say "That HAS to be the best audio!"

>It's almost as if people see the RCA jacks and say "That HAS to be the best audio!"

I think that's exactly it. There was also an anecdote that they removed those to make it cheaper to manufacture (not changed the DACs).

I'd like to see some proper proof for the whole audiophile bullshit, but so far I've seen exactly fuck-all investigation on the matter. It's an urban legend.

Also doesn't help that the early PS1s had self destructing CD drives.

I could be wrong but I don't think any games even take full advantage of the higher sound quality.

You're the fucking idiot kid. My ears can hear the difference between shitty analog cables and a perfect digital feed. And I don't need something with "dolby" written on it to hear it. You dumb fuck.
