Rpg thread. Chrono trigger is one of my all time favorites

I completed this for first time before christmas. Loved it, worthy of the praise it's so constantly smothered with. Played very few proper rpgs though. Think I got to try out Legend of Dragoon sometime soon, ff isnt my cup of tea.

Oh yeh and theme music to ct is god tier!

>> No.2260525

Chrono Trigger to this day is my favorite game of all time.
I wished 65,000,000 BC was more developed though. The whole subplot feels rushed, got awkwardly shoved into the middle of the Middle Ages quest and Ayla is the only party member that doesn't get a sidequest to give closure to her character arc. It feels a lot like filler to pad out the time between Magus' defeat and entering Zeal.

>> No.2260535

Johnny and Tata should have been optional party members.

I didn't like it

The only jRPGs I've found that I like is the Shin Megami Tensei series

I'm playing 3 of them at the same time right now

Tata was a pretty boring character and I'm content with how he was handled in the actual game.
Johnny would have been rad though since he's the only good thing about 2300 AD.

There are fun characters from every era that could have been interesting as actual party members.

-Kino could have been a thief-type party member, with stuff that goes beyond Charm like Mug and Mass-Steal and steal life/mp and all that.
-Toma could've been anything in a fight, but as a roudy adventurous drunk guy he could have had fun party interactions.
-Cyrus's Ghost could have had ghost powers (or even unique defensive properties) and sword moves and all that. What, there are plenty of ghosts wandering around in this game! Why NOT him?
-Gato is rad as hell and could have used more attention from Lucca. Would've been fun to see him being worked on from what they learned from Robo.
-Johnny is the easy answer from the future. Speed man with speedy attacks.
-Spekkio could have been a MIME party member!

Chrono Trigger is good because its short and sweet, its always got you going to your next goal and doesn't have hours and hours of exposition.

People have criticized it for being simple. I would much rather have a simple plot, with great pacing then have something like Xenogears, or Breath of Fire 3.

Xenogears has hours, upon hours of exposition. Do your 30 minute or so task? Prepare for 2 hours of dialogue. Its not fun. Its not engaging. Its a lot of people sitting around and talking. With the occasional cutscene, or moving from A to B then more dialogue.

Breath of Fire 3 has other issues, mainly the complete 180 the story takes and the whole first act being fairly irrelevant since you could just rewrite some segments and expand the second half and have a much more robust and complete story compared to 2 under developed ones that feel terrible. It also has awful minigames and is fairly grindy.

Say what you guys will. Theres a reason that the Square RPG's reign supreme. They are casual as fuck, and thats not a bad thing when it comes to RPG's sometimes. You can clear Chrono Trigger in an afternoon if you wanted. You can't say the same for Xenogears.

>> No.2263997

>>2263985
And I know Xenogears is Square as well.

But its some experimental bullshit compared to the standard ones out at the time like FF7, FF8, and hell, even FF9 which I feel is the worst. Even Chrono Cross with its convoluted plot and heavy handed exposition is a dream compared to Xenogears. Parasite Eve was also super experimental, while still being amazing.

Basically what I'm getting at, is Xenogears sucks a big limp dick.

I tried playing this game last night with a friend. It is way harder than I remember. I got to the dragon tank before I quit. I wanted to grind but there aren't so many good opportunities at this point in the game...

To this day it bugs me that BoF 3 had such an intricate system of combat, but the story was all over the place. First you're having a light hearted orphan adventure, then you're having a really dark orphan adventure, then you get a time skip that revolves around gargoyle-man's crisis of faith.

Still better than 4 with it's terrible macguffin quest contrasted to the side story of the guy who looks like they wanted to make an anti-hero but instead just shit all over him during his segments.

I've just finished Suikoden recently, which I am very happy with and kind of surprised at. As much as I love RPGs, I am pretty bad at finishing games in general, and wasn't sure how far I'd be able to go though something... with "outdated design sensibilities".
But somehow, I was in the right mood and finished it in 20 hours over a couple of weeks. I think having it on my Vita helped a bit too. I liked how you would go back and talk to characters to find out where to go, and it was pretty clear from them most of the time with a bit of exploration. The characters themselves were cool. I loved story and the idea of recruiting an army to go overthrow the corrupted king. I enjoyed the combat and the various systems felt nice, like a natural evolution from the previous era of RPGs. I need to see if there is an English translation of Water Margin too.
I am really looking forward to playing 2 now, but I've decided to do Chrono Trigger first, which I put a few hours into some weeks ago and haven't gotten back to yet.
Slowly but surely I shall play every "worthwhile" video game in existence.

>Ayla is the only party member that doesn't get a sidequest to give closure to her character arc

They had a cave that ended up removed, the Singing Mountains.

But to be honest, Ayla doesn't really have a character arc per se, beyond AYLA STRONK and AYLA LIKE KINO BEST. She gets all the closure she needs in the ending, which implied that she and Kino started fucking like bunnies.

>> No.2266050

>>2266041
I mean you have to understand that Ayla's arc closes during the main story.

Azala and the reptites die out after you kill the Black Tyranno, and Lavos falls. Thats pretty much the "end" of the main events in Pre-history. No other character arc gets fulfilled completely during the main quest, aside from Killing Lavos' which is basically Crono/Marle/Luccas story.

JRPG's?

I'm down. FF IV, V, and VI are awesome SNES RPG's

I've never finished it, but Breath of Fire 2 is a lot of fun (it at least has that rad soundtrack).

And Super Robot Wars Lord of Elemental is an awesome SNES SRPG with branching paths, and over 100 total missions.

Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore are great action RPG's
