i could never really get into daggerfall, probably because i didn't play it in its era. tried it like two years ago and the dungeons just seemed unbearably long and repetitive. which is a shame, i really like the old PC game feel

Most dungeon were, sadly, generated and for that reason many error can occur ,such as game breaking bugs or unable to finish a certain quest. Once you've manage to clear up a couple of them you'll get the flow.

Some of them have been hand made though, mainly the one use in the main quest. Those are the great one

Randomly generated just never seems to work in games like this. I much prefer the approach they took in Morrowind forward. Though oddly, I find Morrowind and Oblivion's graphics are extremely difficult to play with now, while Daggerfall still has a very cool retro look. Maybe I'll try it again, but I dunno. Are there any similar old PC games with more hand made dungeons?

Glad there's an easy working install of this game now. I loved it when I was a kid, failed to set it up in like 2008 with an hour or so of work and ended up never getting much time to try again.

I have nothing meaningful to contribute to this thread other than thanking it for existing, though.

You should really try Amulets and Armors.

Battlespire ,though it isn't a open an open world TES, still have some kickass dungeons and great design overall.

Personally, I just refuse to go dungeon delving until I have my first Recall spell and enough magicka to cast it. Set your anchor point at the questgiver, go do your business, teleport back once you've collected/killed the thing. No more hour-long searches for the exit in a randomly generated, city-sized dungeon.

This may be really dumb, but..how do you attack in daggerfall? I've tried every possible variation of holding down m2 while pointing at an enemy and it doesnt work. I tried assigning it to a letter key too and had no luck.

You have to physically swing the weapon. Whip your mouse around while you hold down the button its like a wii game almost.
Ok now my question: the sound effects in the game are just static bursts of sounds every second amd its really annoying, its also effects ALL sound in cutscenes as well as making said cutscenes incredibly slow. If it helps im using the full setup from UESP wiki, which is ultimately the same one posted in OP
Also this game is fucking great so far, more like the newer games than I expected.

Nope, afaik not. But I think they included DosBox. However I still recommend using DaggerfallSetup. It's the most flexible way to install and play Daggerfall. You can choose from many different versions (1.0 to fully patched 2.13), select mods, quest expasions and fan translations.

it doesn't, nothing compares to DF and morrowind is so different it shouldn't really be compared. You can't recreate DF in a modernized engine, they went in a totally different direction with morrowind that focused on a far smaller snowglobe of a world but the detail packed into the game... fuck I love morrowind. I love DF too and I don't make the mistake of choosing one over the other.

>Most dungeon were, sadly, generated and for that reason many error can occur ,such as game breaking bugs or unable to finish a certain quest.
Daggerfall's dungeons are all pretty much bug free. There's a lot of falling through the floor when moving very slowly or climbing, but that's a problem with the game engine itself. The dungeon generator that Bethesda used when they created the dungeons did a flawless job. This is because every handcrafted block follows the simple rule of having doors where they're supposed to. No matter how you combine blocks that follow that rule, it's completely impossible to create an unnavigable dungeon. There was an error with one specific block that was supposed to be an entrance but had no exit, but that was fixed in an official patch.

The problem with Daggerfall and its dungeon crawling is that many of the QUESTS are extremely buggy, and several of those bugs still remain in the fully patched game. And since about half the quests in the game will send you to dungeons, when your quest object fails to spawn or turns invisible (yes, that has happened) you're going to spend a lot of time exploring a way-too-huge dungeon with nothing to find.

>>2258335
Very sound advice. For those who aren't playing a magic-using character and don't have enough magicka or the means to purchase Recall, make use of Daggerfall's dungeon map. It's a very effective tool to navigate those labyrinths. Just always keep it in 2D mode and get the hang of moving it around and working with its awkward render distance. An oft-overlooked feature is the ability to attach notes to sections of the dungeons and any 3D object you've touched. Furthermore, any object that moves will update instantly on the map, so you can check what's changed when you activate a switch. It can be a godsend for navigating, keeping track of teleporters, or solving lever/gate puzzles. See pic related for an example of finding the exit using notes.

Well, i don't know anon, could be a severe case of retronic syndrome or you just don't like the game so much.

>> No.2264419

>>2263095
Remember that the community resolve a LOT of issues with that game. I very much recommend the OP installer and install all the addons, it make things so much smoother.
Also, when you create a new character, ALWAYS close the game and start EyeofArgonia.exe to give you an optimise render distance

Daggerfall before patch .213 was pretty much a real buggy mess sometime. Now its alot better, but even then I still fall in void sometime, specially when I climb in dungeon or try the use ladders (I've never been able to climb a ladder in that game)

Always play with Cheats ON for those cases. I use it to come back to an existing floor, or sometime help me complete a quest when I'm pretty sure that the enemy is in the wall.

i really like battlespire, it's far from perfect but fun.

everyone knows arena was very heavily based on ultima underworld but kind of went off in its own direction with the open world stuff, resulting in the rest of the series-- battlespire is basically what happened when they went back after daggerfall and tried to make a game that was actually a lot like ultima underworld

What's so much worse about Morrowind's combat over Daggerfall's? I stopped playing Morrowind some time ago without getting very far. Considering giving this game a try.

The first difference you'll notice is the controls: in Daggerfall you move the cursor in the direction you want to attack, while in Morrowind you move/strafe in the direction you want to attack. Daggerfall's combat controls feel more natural to me than Morrowind's, but they both have their pros and cons.

In terms of game mechanics, the use for the directional attacks is the main difference between the two combat systems:
In Daggerfall, each attack type has a different accuracy and damage, with the general rule being that you trade accuracy for damage. So as your weapon skill rises you'll be able to more reliably land the higher damage swings.
In Morrowind, each attack type has the same accuracy, but different damage ranges based on how long you charge them. The end result of this is that there's one optimal attack for fully charged swings and one other optimal attack for fast swings. For the majority of weapons those two attacks are actually one in the same, meaning there's one correct attack and two wrong attacks.

There are other minor differences. Daggerfall has backstabs and random crits, but Morrowind has sneak attacks. Enemies can get knocked back and staggered in Daggerfall when you hit them, making for a kind of flow to melee combat that feels something like jousting; you'll quickly adopt the habit of running in, swinging, and backing away as you prepare your next swing. Whether that's fun or tedious is up to personal preference, but it's certainly far more involving of the player than Morrowind's.

Archery is the same between the two games, except for the differences noted above in addition to the fact that you cannot charge your shots in Daggerfall.
Spellcasting is nearly identical, except in Morrowind you toggle between your weapon and spell while in Daggerfall you press a key to cast every time. Thus, Daggerfall makes it easier to quickly cast untargeted spells, while Morrowind makes it easier to repeatedly cast targeted ones.

Do you have any hints for people who haven't played that many 2.5D retro RPGs, but would like to get into them? I love MM6 to bits, but when I tried to play the World of Xeen, the 2.5D graphics kept confusing the hell out of me. Is it just the question of getting used to them, or is there some trick to make the exploration easier? Also, any hints that would make the beginning of my first playthrough less rough?

Do you mean you're having trouble with the grid-base movement style? Cause if so, even for me it bring confusion sometime. Its an old system and not many new games is using it today. MM6 make movements feel so much better.

The only advice I can give you is to look at the map carefully and always remember that you can strafe.
