it's an ags-101 screen from a GBA SP.

you can mod it into the original gba either by a thousand hours of rewiring or by buying a 6 dollar cable.

it's awesome.

as for the case that's a custom job from rose colored gaming.

1)GBA doesn't belong here, anything that was made after 1999[unless its a romhack, gameplay mod, homebrew stuff, Emulation hardware and anything made for a console/system that was released in or before 1999] is not allowed, and the GBA isn't one of the mentioned things therefore it doesn't belong here. The only exception would be to talk about how GB/GBC games play on GBA or the best way to mod a GBA non-SP/Micro to have backlight or flashcart material
2)The GBA is as good as its successors if not better (at least in my opinion) and it should not be called shit

Random tip to all you Game Boys out there:

If you got a GBA SP and you want to play Kirby Tilt'n'Tumble or Game Boy Camera or some other game that needs to be right-side up, just use a GB GameShark with the game. That thing plugs into the system and then has a reverse-direction plug for the cart, so it will set your upside-down carts right side up.

Here is my meager collection. I picked up Star Ocean at the Anime Expo last year and plan on playing it once I up my moonrune capabilities.

Not pictured are my consoles which are currently in storage at my parent's house. I should probably bring at least one with me since I can't play any of those right now.

I have a purple, a clear purple, and a Pokemon G/S special edition Gameboy Color, plus a Gameboy in not terribly great condition and a purple Gameboy Pocket that's missing the battery cover. I should buy one online but I can't justify the $5 shipping for a $5 item right now. I'm too poor. Eventually, though.

The Brickboy sold over 118 million units over the years. I'm pretty sure a buncha chiptune hipsters wouldn't cause shortages and price inflations. It's the general collection wave that sets in about 15 years after the high point of a particular piece of hardware when people who used to play it as kids enter the working world and earn enough money not to care whether a bunch of nostalgia costs them ten bucks or fifty bucks. Look at N64s, N64 games and GBAs nowadays.

Shortages no, price inflation yes.

The original game boy sold for like $40 retail. That price was the standard for a long time until chiptunes got "big". Now everyone wants to sell their game boy for $80-$120 because it's potential audio equipment.

I took them to a print shop. I printed mine with 340g/m2. The guy who posted the ones he printed used 240 I think. Anything between 240 and 340 should work well. The thicker the sturdier. The ones I uploaded are all on 300dpi so you should use a pro laser printer for the best result.
You can always try printing one at home with a thick paper. What color? Whatever you like, man. That's the beauty.

If you intend on using the PSDs I uploaded, or making your own, the things you need to keep an eye for (except for the obvious) is changing all of the text. It's easy to forget changing one of the three codes.

Also, if you're making your own, try to find the logo to cut and place on the gray area below, or just stretch the box to fill the gray area.

If you need any tips on how to assemble, let me know.
I had a tutorial but also deleted it.

As someone who owns the SmartCard, bought it during my chiptune phase I wouldn't recommend it if you're only intention is to play games. It's real use shines as an LSDJ cart when you use the first page for LSDJ and it's .sav while using the second page for music programs and games that don't save.

Celebi was a coded event that required an item you where only supposed to be able to get from the japanese versions (it had something to do with a location in the game associated with a cell-phone link-up).

Did acually every game come in a plastic case?
I can't even remember. I know Tetris and F1 Race did at least.

If so how come so many games miss the cases? Or did they later stop including them?

Would only make sense if Nintendo was selling the cases on their own but I think they never did, did they?

They were licensed by Nintendo, though not necessarily manufactured by them. The front of the cases are identical to the clear Nintendo cases. The back is close, down to the Nintendo logo, but the clear cases say "Made in Japan" while the colored cases say nothing on the back. The INSIDE of the colored cases are branded "PRIDE Made in Mexico."

I'm certain they were licensed, though. I remember seeing them and assuming they must be third party but was surprised to see "official Nintendo" branding on the packaging. Before anyone calls bootleg, these were purchased in the 90's in a department store.

I had no idea, thanks m8.
I only have 2 non Nintendo game cases, a clear one that is a knock off that looks like a real one except it is a lot more stiff and misses the Nintendo logo and Made in Japan labeling. The other one is a red Isy Pac, that works well but probably wasn't licenced by Nintendo since the logo is missing on that one too.

I always thought all the colored ones were knock offs/unlicensed and it is great to know that that is not the case. Still need about 10 more to have all my games in cases.

The latter. Other than the Super Game Boy itself, Nintendo never implemented SGB features in any other iteration of anything, ever. A bit of a letdown, especially on games that were built around it (Donkey Kong 94).

The one that feels the most "simulation-like" is the N64 game, although many of the missions are weird, most of them remain true to the original scene (I personally liked the Magmadiver mission where you have to look for Sandalphon on the lava).

The mahjong game for the GBC was made by Gainax, they had many of these for PC, I think the Saturn also got some Evangelion or "Shinji and friends" mahjong game.
The GBC game in particular is called "Mahjong Hokan Keikaku" (mahjong instrumentality project).

In fairness, the way SGB applies colors I don't think it can really be done on the GBC, and not through straight VC emulation. For GBC I suppose it's possible for them to have found a way, but perhaps not easily (I suppose they could have coded equivalent palettes into the handheld itself for all SGB games, or even just first-party SGB titles, but that probably would've taken a lot of memory at the time), while VC ROMS would have to be rewritten... which I definitely wouldn't have minded in the case of some titles. Thrown in gimmicky 3D and call it a 3D Classic instead of a VC title, I don't care.

Warlocked

Bionic Commando: Elite Forces

Donkey Kong Country (Can't remember if there was a mulitplayer but I don't think so)

Lufia: The Legend Returns and Power Quest are good too. Power Quest has fighting that isn't turn based though if you are only looking for that.

Most RPGs I know of were those black carts honestly some good ones are:

Azure Dreams
Quest: Brian's Journey
Legend Of The River King (there was also a normal GB version of this later rereleased as GBC)
Metal Walker
Crystalis

Back then most people threw them away thinking it is just packaging. I mean all you need to keep the game safe is the plastic case.

It makes sense with GBC only games since that bulge didn't make for a decent fit, but Dragon Dance was a black cart, you'd think it would get a case. Oh well. I stick all my GB games into plastic baseball card pages anyway.

I only have 2 black boxed GBC games both came without the plastic case but since they weren't sealed anymore I was unsure if the previous owner maybe took them.

But that would explain why so many games miss the plastic case.

Just got the first 2 Pokemon Game Guides.
Easy to tell the first one from Red/Blue is a used one but the one for R/B/Y was actually brand new.

I never had them as a kid and managed just fine but I have to say those are excellent guides. Makes me want to get the Silver & Gold one too but I heard that one isn't nearly as good.

Can game boy games from different regions play together? ie. Could a US and JP copy of Pokemon trade and battle? What about less 'complex' games such as F1 Race or Bomberman GB?

because like most retro consoles, people tossed away the nintendo boxes. i've only seen some boxed nes, snes and GB games in the last near 15 years of retro flea market runs.

the only games i have boxed were stuff i bought at GS when it was new or used GS stuff when they were getting rid of GB and GBC.

anything you find now boxed is going to be junk games, count on it. anything like pokemon or the mega man games are probably rare as fuck and in someone elses hands, not yours.

no, i mean i have Shantae and i have no idea where it is. it's one of those things where your games have been in the same drawer for years and it couldn't have gone anywhere else.

only thing i can think of is maybe i had it in one of the gameboys i sold. sold off all my gameboy systems that weren't my GBA SP, made no sense to keep a dumb amount of systems i can only use one of at a time.

i really downsized my shit too, i had a lot more stuff, but i started to think "am i going to play most of these games more than once?" i got rid of all the GB pokemons, they all got boring and too easy for RPG's

I asked a guy that has many Game Boy games still in the box and he told me my assumption was right that Nintendo stopped to include the plastic cases with GBC games.

Official reason was they wanted to be more eco friendly so they put GBC games in cardboard inlays instead of plastic ones like they did with GB games and they also stopped including the plastic cases.

Well of course they still sold them seperately to make cash.

Since I only have a small selection of Game Boy games I just put them in UGCs along with the system itself.

Lost the covers due to Hard Drive crash, but I had made custom covers with Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow on a single UGC, Gold/Silver/Crystal, Mario Land/Mario Land 2/Donkey Kong 94, etc to take up less space.
