That's not why valve made it. Hell even look at TFC. Nobody played that buggy mess relatively speaking. Valve took it and it's now it's one of the biggest online games out there.

In no way is it from 99. You can't call it a beta and it's not an alpha either.

The mod was released in 1999. It wasn't a beta or an alpha, it was a fully fledged release. It was just a non-commercial release.

Yes, I know what a mod is. It was a total conversion - it wasn't Half-Life is any major way aside from the tech. It was in essence an entirely different game, which was taken one step further when it became an entirely different game with a commercial release.

It can be full, but not official. It was a full release - you did indeed get Counter-Strike. Not "Half-Life but different," Counter-Strike. It was further improved, certainly, but the mod was effectively complete. Further additions were tweaks, balances, and bugfixes.

And regardless of that it was a mod. You didn't just download the mod and it worked. It required the HL assets.

A mod is NEVER a full fledged release and if it is someone is getting sued because they are stealing assets.

CS, TFC, and DoD all mods that got their own standalone released. The retail version of counter strike was just the mod, the half life engine and some other multiplayers mods and modes like weapons, half-life death match. If you only purchased half life back when retail CS launched you could still download CS as a mod for half life and play with the retail release because they were the exact same. The retail release is just the mod and the engine to run it. Counter Strike has never not been a mod for the original half life stupid argument.
