As a big fan of retro games and hip-hop I always think its really cool when retro game music is sampled (inb4 stolen). some cool ones I found are:

Bone Thugs and Harmony must've loved Eternal Champions because they used two samples from that game.

E. 1999 Eternal

And the original version of Tha Crossroads

And Wiz Khalifa also really like Chrono Trigger because he sampled a few tracks from that game

Any other games samples you know of?

none of those dildos did jack, their producers made their beats and music.

That they stole shit from a video game is fucking pathetic, not to be celebrated.

You DO know they have to pay royalties to the artist to use that sample, right?

not necessarily hip hop but thundercat used some sonic samples in this song. One for sure is when sonic gets hit from spikes

Royalties do exist, you know. Besides, what about all the instances where video game music stole from other music? So yeah, Zombie Nation ripped off Lazy Jones, but Lazy Jones ripped off Fade to Grey, 99 Luftballoons etc. It happens a lot on both sides.

Holy shit there is some fucking mad in this thread. In any case, no, credit does not need to be given nor royalties paid depending on amount of sampling done. Taking a phrase to make a beat or individual notes/effects is done all the fucking time. It only becomes a problem when you pull some shit like Timbaland/Nelly Furtado and Tempest/AcidJazzed Evening. Even then, not much may come of it.

It even goes both ways; Doom is notorious for the amount of blatant 'sampling' of all sorts of early 90s alternative/metal music in its OST. They knew the exact legal limit they could sample without giving credit and went to town.

I'm pretty sure that in the case of sampling (ie taking the exact same musical phrase) you have to pay royalties if its on an official release,
if it's on some free material people don't bother to sue.
Also for Doom music it's not called sampling but yeah, the difference is not that important.
And as some other dude said it even happens in a lot of musical genre
