Wait, why did you do this? Is it a technical problem? The only malfunction I ever had with my original playstation was the controller/memory card would sometimes stop responding and when I pushed down on the case it would start working again. I never thought to turn the whole console upside down, because I just took the case apart and taped the wiring harnesses in place.

>> No.2219979

>>2219967

In early models the power supply was right next to the plastic laser assembly. Heat from the power supply would make the laser assembly warp and malfunction. Turing it upside-down let heat dissipate better due to the vents on the bottom that you see in that picture. Later models had the laser assembly on the other side of the drive to keep them away from the power supply.

Actually, I got this partially wrong. Here's a Wikipedia quote that explains it better.

>The first batch of PlayStations used a KSM-440AAM laser unit whose case and all movable parts were completely made out of plastic. Over time, friction causes the plastic lens sled rail to wear out—usually unevenly. The placement of the laser unit close to the power supply accelerated wear because of the additional heat, which makes the plastic even more vulnerable to friction. Eventually, one side of the lens sled can become so worn that the laser can tilt, no longer pointing directly at the CD. This would cause data read errors and games would no longer load. One common fix is to turn the PlayStation upside down, making the lens sled rest on the unworn top rails. Sony eventually fixed the problem by making the sled out of die-cast metal and placing the laser unit slightly farther away from the power supply on later models of the PlayStation.

I need some help guys, I bought a malfunctioning Psone (disc doesn't spin probably because the "closed tray" button doesn't register or something, I want to slap it onto a 900x PS1 because that one doesn't also read CDs because the plastic holding those metal spheres wore off and two of them broke free, and aren't really adjustable anymore (one even fell inside the lens workspace, whoops).

Since I'm a total mess with electronics, and I don't have too much experience on how to handle ribbon cables and the like, can someone point or explain step by step what do I have to buy/do in order to get the new disc unit inside the old PS1? That's a good thing. The N64 version has sound. Not game sound mind you. A horrible ear grating loop of shit tune so loud it distorts and would overheat the amps and cause your setup to burst into flames if you let it run for more than 15 minutes,
Fortunately no human has been able to stand the pain of listening to it for more than a few minutes so there have been no fires.

I'll just post this here with a big shiny image to attract the eye of responders:

I'm thinking about getting a PSOne. Is there any actual reason to do so rather than just playing on a PS2, I.e. compatibility issues, image quality, piracy, or is it purely sentimental?

I'd like to eventually get the little screen for it too, but that's just cause I think it's rad.

>> No.2239258

Some PS games actually do run better on PS/PSone consoles than they do on PS2. Suikoden II comes to mind. Playing it on the PS2 will cause the music to skip during the tactical portions.

Even if you have a way of playing PS1 games on your PS2 that doesn't suck ass it can still be worth having a PSOne. I have flip top screens on mine and use them like portables. I suppose I could get better picture quality on a tiny PSP screen or a shitting tablet emulator but for the size and quality it's fine.
They have no sentimental value to me because I never had one until a couple years ago but it is a very nice looking system.

Ps1 dev hardware and retail hardware isnt very difficult to get a good understanding of.
>region code
>last digit on model number is for the region (SCPH-100X for example)
>0 = Japan
>1 = US/Canada (basically any non PAL region)
>2 = Any PAL region
>3 = Asia (less common but still around)

>Model number prefix
>SCPH = retail

Its once you realize how many variations there are as well as how many special models there are that you see why this is important.

BUT THE MOMENT YOU LEAVE PS1 AND GO TO PS2 YOU MAY AS WELL KILL YOURSELF BECAUSE THERES AN UNNEEDEDLY LARGE AMOUNT OF PS2 UNITS AND VARIATIONS FOR WHAT APPEARS TO BE NO REASON TRIVIAL OR COMPLEX

also, can I ask what NTSC means without looking stupid?

just to be sure if I've got this down, a DTL - H1003 model would be a developer's PS1 from Asia (possibly only playing games that are Asian region encoded)?

the thousands place is the series
lower numbers are earlier models. as they went forward in time ports were removed (parallel i/o to name a big one to fight piracy see >>2237513 >>2237517 for an example).
1000 series had parallel i/o, serial i/o, AV out, composite out, dc out (was a small little thing) and svideo. this is the point you wanna start. as you progress you had the 5000, 7000, and 9000 series, each series having some other port removed.
there are also variants where you have 5500 or 7702 (im not checking this one but 5500 is real) where maybe they had a bundle or some shit. then the slim model is a SCPH-110X (funny enough a DTL-H110X is a fat model with the little power adapter like the slim model. its rather amusing)
see >>2243907 for an overview in a condensed manner

NTSC - the television broadcasting system used in North America and Japan.
PAL - the euro variation of the above

a DTL-H1003 doesnt exist. the reason is that the XXX3 models are basically NTSC-U XXX1 but modified to play certain regions. i forget the specifics because of the weirdness but yeah, while it makes sense to have a DTL-H1003, one doesnt exist.

>>2243953
theres 4 but its still technically 3 for some strange reason.

>>2243846
okay, i need to make 2 posts for this total (this being the first) because 2k character cap.

so first off, ps2 and ps1 have special units. the ones listed are actual ps2-looking ones. there are PS2-TOOLs that are the dev system (or prototype i guess (same with the ps3, goddamn theyre sexy and large)) which dont look like the console you would see normally. the ps1 had boards you put in your windows 3.x/98 computer so thats really the difference between special parts.
the ps2 shit has all these variants for some reason (revisions on internal hardware, software, casing etc) but the one thing that stands out here is that they dont have the ability to play DVDs. Only CDs continuing post in a sec. at 2k mark.

>> No.2244094

>>2244063
the ps2 units were made to never play burned dvds. end of story. so the devs had to do things like certain builds on CDs and stuff or load it thru the HDD which does very well.
though its hard to say what the actual difference is for the ps2 units are aside from motherboard and bios revision etc, the only notable differences are the region lockouts. some will be free some will be region specific. its really bothersome.

in fact, theres a unit on ebay right now if anyone wanted to take a look (seach "debug playstation" and set it to worldwide)

regardless, shit was fucking retarded on the PS2 and its like theres no end to the bullshit on em. theyre very nice though...

and then you have dev psps which have a psp, with some big fuckin cables and a tower that runs all the shit a psp does. the psp on this portion is a controller with display. almost nothing more.
ps3s are pretty alright too... not my cup of tea on knowledge but theyre still special. in fact, heres the shit you can alter when using a debug ps3 settings on the XMB https://jerem73.wordpress.com/2010/10/18/%E2%98%85-debug-settings/
the console debuggers/test units are like the ps3s you know, but you have the ps3 TOOL which is like... likely bigger than a normal computer tower.
regardless shit isnt my thing so i know less about that and the psp.

im not into modding but i still wish to obtain more dev stuff. Personally i want a debug ps3 only because shit would make my time on TCRF.net so much more easy, but im broke so im fucked. though if you manage to have one you can basically use it to play ps1, ps2 and to an extent ps3 games with no issue. burned or not, hdd or not.

any questions?

It's like the King's Field games, but has some different gameplay elements. Chance's are if you don't like King's Field, you won't like Shadow Tower, and vice versa.

you can get your account canned for selling modded consoles, you certainly cannot sell the actual preprogrammed chips.

also, PSIO is never going to happen.

I think it depends on how a game is ripped. If someone didn't do it properly, you get results like that. Missing audio and such. Sorry I don't have more details.

I've fought with issues like that for the past couple of days, and had different results depending on the brand of CD-R's I'm using and the way I'm burning them. So far the best results have been with a certain type of Verbatim discs, but even then I have to burn them at a friend's place, since my drive doesn't seem to be up to the task. Sure, it finishes and my PC can read the discs just fine, but I get a ton of miscompares when using ImgBurn's Verify function and the games are nearly unplayable on the PS1 itself. Audio and FMVs skip all the time and games may just freeze on loading screens.

Some say that this could be fixed by adjusting the laser of the PS1, but I don't have the courage to tinker with it after hearing some people rendering their consoles unable to read anything after trying. Doesn't seem worth it since I can play burned games just fine as long as I make sure to use the right kind of discs and burn them on something that isn't my PC's current disc drive.

I was gonna try out the swap trick with a CD I burned, just for kicks.Tried it. It worked. Then the game froze for some reason. So without thinking I hit the reset button and the game booted up. It's been working fine ever since.
I bought it used ages ago so I guess the previous owner chipped it. Just never knew about it.

Also. For reference. These are the types of cheap memory cards I'm talking about.
