That sucks man. Genesis was one of my favorite systems of all time. Used to rent a new game every night at blockbuster. Although I never had a Nintendo console growing up, my dad was a huge sega babby.

Same. I got mine from a friend in like early 2011, who got it from a mutual friend of ours who we no longer are friends with. I still remember being at that friend's house on his birthday and seeing Sonic Adventure for the first time. Utterly mind-blowing.

Let me start by saying I was born in 1987

I didn't know the Master System EXISTED until after the Dreamcast had died, and I didn't know the Turbografx or HuCards even existed until even longer after that

Speaking of ownership, all of them.

My mom was one of those analogue types in the 90s, hated digital entertainment (still doesn't have a cellphone or use a computer herself) and wouldn't allow a console in the household; apart from the family PC because it was also useful for learning and homework, and almost at the turn of the millennium when the Game Boy Color was already out she allowed me to buy a used brick Game Boy from my own money so I could wish for Pokemon Blue for christmas and not be an outsider in school.

I did of course have some friends with consoles, like the SNES, N64, Playstation or later PS2 or NGC, but I missed out on ever even playing Sega entirely, and having to play the others at a friend's place every time was also not the same thing as having it at home.

Her upbringing didn't pay off, my teen years I got glued to the computer in instead and even my career is computer related now in the form of CAD, plus I'm catching up on all those consoles I couldn't have by amassing a collection now.

>> No.2238935

We had a NES, SNES, Virtual Boy, Game Boy and PS1. I never played Sega at all, beyond a disc that had a Genesis collection for the PS2. Only played N64 at my aunt and uncle's house, but loved (and still love) it.

I'm pretty sure one of my brothers had a Dreamcast or a Saturn but I only remember seeing it once.

Dreamcast for me to, probably more like 3 years ago.

As a kid, thought the only Sega console was Genesis. I always assumed there was older ones, but I never heard or saw of them and thought Genesis was competing with the PS1/N64.

Fast forward a few years, probably early 00's.
Friend shows me this weirdddddd controller with a big hole in the middle. Just looked cumbersome. We joked about how weird it looked, and then played more N64, Genesis, Atari, and PS2.

Fast forward to highschool. Learn about emulation, get to play things I never got to in the past. I'm a huge poorfag Learn about the Dreamcast, but I'm unable to get the emulator to work.

Fast forward to college. A close friend brings up his Dreamcast and we play it occasionally. It was pretty cool. Learn you can burn any game to a regular CD and just play it. It was amazing. We ended up pirating a ton of games and the sheer volume unique titles at my fingertips for the Dreamcast made me fall in love with it. Bought one while I was still in college because of this, and it's probably my most used console now.

Never heard of the Saturn or Master System before /vr/, and a few other more obscure one.

Europe here, I know only a handful of people undfer 50 years old who have played 2600. If you get your timing right, you might get one for ~120€, if you find them at all.

I've played pretty much all the best Atari games as cross-platform games or rereleases though. But how I can't know if they were worse or not other than copmparing video footage, which is less than ideal. But the C64 versions seemed all roughly as good or better.

>Master System
Wasn't aware of it until early 2000's. I was able to buy one for $20 a little over a year ago and have about a dozen games so far. Wonder Boy In Monster Land quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. Most of games I've played though really don't stack up to the tons of great games on the NES IMO.

>Turbografx
Wasn't aware of it until the early 2000's. I've played a few games via emulation, but never really spent much time on any of them. I've resisted the temptation to buy one a few times.

>Playstation
I became aware of it probably around 1996, but stuck with Nintendo and cartridges. I rented one a couple of times to play some wrestling games and hated the load times. I've got MGS and SotN, and I've played a few other games via emulation. I wish I had gotten a lot of games when they were going for cheap after the PS2 came out, and I've always been super-reluctant to buy used discs.

>Virtual Boy
I was aware of it at the time, but I don't think there were ever any demo units in the stores around me. I've never really had any interest in it besides Wario Land, which I played through most of in an emulator.

>Jaguar, 3DO, cdI, and anything else that wasn't Nintendo or Sega
Wasn't aware of them, still not interested.

> Retro games or consoles you never got to play as a kid

virtual boy
atari jaguar
neo geo
sega CD

I had seen these, even in person, but never got to play them as a kid in the 90s. I remember KB Toys had the jaguar for cheap but I never saw any games. I recall the virtual boy on display at k-mart but it was up high on a display and I was too short to reach it. I remember the sega CD being this "elite status" addon for my genesis that I was too young to want because snes and genesis and power rangers filled up my christmas list too quickly to ever have room for it. It was always that mid-summer after thought that you'd plan on asking for it THIS year but never do because xmas game sales.

and of couse neo geo was that "wow you must be rich" system that only your friend's older brother, who was home from college, had with that 1 game you only see at putt-putt.

Europe here, there's a lot of 2600 here, specially bootleg ones.

I am also in this boat.

My brother became addicted to WoW as soon as vanilla hit, and my parents made an executive decision to never allow me any video games right at the time where I became interested in playing them.

Of course, they made exceptions for PC-based learning games which I played on our old COMPAQ. Soon, that became RTS', then FPS'. A slippery slope which led to me being a massive collectorfag, constantly attempting to relive the video games I never got to play in the first place.

I have just now beated Metal Gear Solid. Catching up is kinda fun.
