Why was the sound so awful?

>> No.2235339 [DELETED]

>>2235335
It wasn't bad. It just didn't use the same sony hardware as the SNES, so at first when developers ported over tons of SNES games, they had trouble with the sound. Games designed for the ground up on it sound good.

Nintendo cheeped out, just as they did with the cartridge space.
Could have been a portable PlayStation, was a portable SNES instead, which isn't a bad thing but a bit of a waste of its 32-bits.

Developers used sample based music on a system with a lousy DAC. The DAC on the SNES is 16-bit while the GBA only had an 8-bit DAC. No idea why Nintendo didn't include a 16-bit DAC because they are not THAT much more expensive.

Also: not retro, but it's okay if we compare it to retro systems I guess

the games specifically made for the console aren't retro for this boards standards, but the console can play the GB and GBC library which are retro... the best GBA was definitely one of two last versions which was the AGS-101, with 2 levels of brightness. The GBA Micro can only play the GBA library IIRC-

Orignal GBA and GBA SP frontlit version had a refresh rate of 60fps, just as the GBA Micro, the brighter SP backlit version model had a refresh rate of 50fps.

A slower refresh rate can, for instance, make scrolling fast or fast movements on the screen seem a bit blurry. I've never compared both systems side by side to be honest.

For me the GBA was about the possibility of playing GB, GBC and a new line of games designed for the console, I've never played the first SP in complete darkness but I can play for a couple of hours the SP+ without major problems- I'll stick with that, if not, I'd get an afterburner and stick it in the original one. No, the default size was 32 MB, about the same as Chrono Trigger (with games like Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia going up to 48 MB). Sample payback takes up more space than songs rendered on the default audio hardware. SNES was better at that.

I don't see the big deal. It's essentially a portable SNES. I'd argue that it's more "retro" than even the 5th gen consoles.

But I've been arguing for a while now that we should just have a sliding scale of -15 years that goes purely based on release date of the game and not of the system that its on. Doubt that'll ever happen, but IMO it makes far more sense than even more arbitrary rules such as "games on this console are allowed even though the games were released in 2001 onward but this console and the games that came out in 2000 are banned"

Biggest complaints are the screen, which tries to pull off 2x native, and the action on the buttons (especially dpad and shoulders) being a bit too high and loose. Other than that it's an unexpectedly well-built machine, but there are better alternatives for around the same price.

Back on topic OP, read this shit, I took it from a forum and it shes some light on the topic:

They are the most shameless penny pinchers in the world. They go beyond law, moral and family to save a quarter of a cent.

The GBA DAC is a piece of shit. At best you get 8 bits resolution per channel. But only for sample rates <=32.768kHz. And because 8 bits is alreay fucking terrible, nobody in their right mind went higher.

Speaking of which, sample rates are exact powers of two. The hardware is fundamentally incompatible with any studio-produced audio. Every little squip or blurp you want to take out of a sample collection, onto the GBA, has to undergo a resampling process, which has never helped quality. And then the crappy 0.00000001$ DAC comes in and kills whatever quality you have left.

>>2236483-san pretty much gets it, 8 bit audio is inherently noisy and the sound signal path is poorly isolated so you hear noise from the other components as well.

The other two main factors:

Most devs used Nintendo's software audio synthesis library, which was pretty barebones, just basic samples modulated by volume and frequency envelopes IIRC. There's a fan patch of FFVI GBA, for instance, that replaces the audio engine with one that provides FIR filters (used for echo for music, lowpass for sound effects, etc) like the original used the SNES's audio hardware for, and it sounds significantly better than the "authentic" port.

Also, memory still wasn't ''that'' cheap in the days of the GBA, so a lot of devs lesser quality samples to save space.

I'm not tech savvy in this matter mate, this is what I reckon:

the sp+ screen will work at 50fps no matter what input it gets, it won't shut down if it gets more input, it'll just carry on refreshing 50 times in a second, so if any GBA cart throws 60fps at it (yes, GBA games were designed thinking in 60fps if you consider that the original GBA and the first SP screens work at that refresh rate), it'll just throw 50fps, therefore, 10 frames will be lost, who will notice this? I know I haven't, but I have never compared both systems running at the same time, the same game...

When they made the sp+ they probably had a "reason" to knock 10 frames from the refresh rate... maybe it has something to do with higher power usage because of the new lighting system? They probably evaluated the frame rate drop of the screen and noticed it wasn't that much of a deal... I don't know.

If there were a process in the middle that regulated the fps between the cart and the screen, then in that case, and only if the screen of the sp+ allows 60fps, putting it into the original gba, which in this case is giving you 60fps, would be the perfect solution and you'd be getting 60fps in the brilliant sp+ screen...

>> No.2237494

>>2237482
>cont

oh wait but, there "is" a process in the middle.. yes? so the question is. Does the sp+ give you 50fps because its video output setting is adjusted to that frame rate, or is it because the screen is designed to only work at 50fps?

Cost cutting possibly? I mean, the plastic shell on the SP was also downgraded and got scratches and ruboffs far more easily than any previous Nintendo handheld. I go to Ebay and half the SPs on there have discolored edges along the outside.

Also I want to ask again because last night's post didn't receive any replies. Can't you simply take the screen out of the original, peel some lightproof foil or something off the back and slap some of that newfangled EL tape stuff behind it? Isn't that how backlighting in LCDs works anyway?

I dunno mate... maybe you didn't get replies because nobody knows the answer here... anyway, on youtube I found some videos of people messing around swapping GBA screens, because of the "lighting problem", however every solution seems to be swapping the full screens or installing a lighting mod like the afterburner.

I don't have a GBA or tools handy right now to take it apart myself, but judging from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL52H3mnHpI video the screen seems to sit in a metal casing or shell of its own and looks like a fairly self contained unit.

No? The casing doesn't let light through, and to get inside the casing you'd probably have to pry it open and possibly destroy the screen. At this point I'd rather just stick an 001 screen or Afterburner mod in there to get at least some lighting while retaining the 60 Hz refresh rate.

'83 here, you're all acting horribly immature about this.

If the OP wants to post a thread on GBA let him, If it breaks the rules, the mods will do their job. Otherwise contribute to the discussion. from your bantering alone you've let this thread live this long. If it were ignored it would fall off the last page and kill itself.

Personally, I have no beef with "6th gen" but if everyone else is so anal about this, I feel we could come to a much better discussion on this by actually making a petition to either permanently ban, or newly allow these extra additions.

A good majority of the GBA's library were ports of SNES titles, not to mention how similar the GBA felt, it was basically a portable SNES with a higher grade sound chip and portability, It didn't get really enjoyable until the backlight of the SP, and GB player, but it was pretty much the same.

It should be allowed here. Plus Gameboy/Gameboy color threads bleed into Advance anyways, why don't we just call Gameboy retro and be done with it already, its not like its the DS or 3DS.

continuing the sound issue---
This is a cool comparison:

Listen to the track Onett from Mother1+2 how it sounds on the GBA, then listen to a flac file file, which basically is a GBAmusRiper (app that rips the midi and high quality samples from the game and automatically compiles the samples into a soundfont and adjusts the midis to correspond with its appropriate in-game sample) midi file, which was converted to flac. In other words: you get the sound info that is stored in the game, but you convert it with other hardware/software to a midi file. This gives you an idea of how much the GBA is butchering the sound with its conversion.

I had just beaten Metroid: Zero Mission for the first time in a decade, and during the play through I noticed the sound quality was a little more grainy and "blown out" then I remembered. Just wanted some input from people. As soon as I posted, I remembered the 1999 deal, and thought "Shit. Well, whatever. It'll get deleted."

Now here we are.

I really think that you're over thinking it. The janitors that browse here don't have a clue about the rules. Yes they have that list of the rules but they don't know how to enforce. It's why you get battle station threads deleted that are 99% retro but some guy has a single PS2 in his collection. Or where you post mentioning something not talked about much. Like arcade boards and stuff to play them with. The janitors assume it's not retro even though it's been around since the 90s. The janitors for the most part are not part of the board, they're there to enforce and nothing else and since they have zero involvement they fuck up a lot. Some are good though.

Also if anything this thread shows how much animosity there is for 6th gen. Not that the shit isn't retro was reason enough.

Who ever the janitor is probably assumes GBA is retro or it's his agenda that it is.
