Can anyone enlighten me on the general history of EA?

idk, I always imagined them having a more humble roots

>> No.2223190

Every company had more humble roots.

You think McDonalds started out as a massive corporation? No man, it was just some dude flipping burgers.

EA got ahead early because they became a publisher. Which was fine, except when the PS1-era started and gaming started to become more popular, they gained more and more influence.

They also bought out a shitload of companies early on.

Can you really imagine Trip Hawkins as humble? The guy was a ruthless businessman and harassed developers.

I can imagine him as some sort of high-school bully growing up.

So is this just another "lets shit on EA because of what they are now whilst we disregard all those great titles and fantastic sport games they released in the retro era".

I think they were decent while they still had the "C" and before they went all sports crazy. I played lots of cool games from the on my C64, like pic related.

Activision was also pretty cool when it first started, they released a ton of great Atari 2600 games.

EA ruined Origin in the early 90s after years of bullying them. Then they went on to repeat the same thing with tons of other studios. They published some good titles despite that but they've always been evil.

>> No.2223210

>>2223201
from the wiki
"His new startup, If You Can, aims to foster social and emotional development (SEL) in children, teaching compassion and anti-bullying lessons"

Well, that`s quite pathetic. See our new game "Why you shouldn`t kill your pet"

Not as bad as they are now, but they were still trash. They used to use shady business practices like reverse-engineering the genesis and then blackmailing sega or else they'd leak to other publishers. This is also why EA games came on those retarded-looking carts with the yellow side panel.

As far as the games, same old same old. Tons and tons of random sports games, the occasional good game, good devs being bought out and cannibalized, etc.

EA was very cool at the start.

In the second half of the 90s when they started buying up studios and trying to control them, then trying to integrate them to their own brand portfolio. That was a major fuckup that killed a LOT of great studios - Westwood, Bullfrog, etc. One of their (former?) CEOs even admitted that in retrospect that was an awful decision.

They've toned that down nowadays, but are still abusing their IP portfolio in offensive ways. But hey, so do a ton of other huge companies, like Square for example.

They have rarely ever actually "developed" any games I even like from them. I liked Dead Space 1 and 2. I also like Mutant League Football (they developed this right?).

Besides that they usually will only have published a game I liked. Such as Black & White.

>> No.2224715

Turns out that most games I associate with EA, weren`t by them but from some smaller studio like Archon and M.U.L.E .

Goddamn, that really explains a lot about EA's current attitude of executive fucker-y. The part where gordon explains how to reverse engineer a genesis makes me imagine the typical 80's business guy from futurama. "here's how you do it man, take a couple engineers and just throw em in a room with a genisis, keep yelling at them until they figure it out. Than you wanna bring in the lawyers and another couple engineers. walk away with a cool 20 mil no problem."

I loved EA games and software before they got into consoles. ARCHON, Skyfox, Deluxe Paint, Adventure Construction Set, Music Construction Set, THE BARD'S TALE, ARCTIC FOX...

I made so many games with ACS.

Killed the Ultima (single-player) series. They were responsible for 8 and 9, the worst of the series. Heck, 9 even had a full blown ad thrown inside the game for EA Games.

Also killing the Wing Commander and Lands of Lore series.

they used to make good stuff and by the ps2/gcn/xbox era they expanded their brand.

... then by 2004'ish they started buying the license to every major sport series eliminating the competition. Every gaming magazine bashed them for it because it ruined the year-to-year game releases making each year's title virtually the same as previously becuase with no competition, why make it better?

thats when they got evil imo.
