^ this. The SNES Sim City is the only one I like.

Sim City 2000 my first Sim City, which of course I was addicted to for hundreds of hours. Then I got a copy of this and it came across as such a downgrade that I found no fun in it and just ended up trading it away again.

I have a slight preference for SC over SC2000. The snes version of SC has goals for the default game and the scenarios are saveable. No other SC in the series has these features.

This was my first Sim City game and while it is pretty funny and comfy (the soundtrack is awesome) my favorite for actual city building is Sim City 2000

I don't know dude, I'm probably doing something wrong but I always end up building for about 30 minutes until I get to a point where I'm flat broke and I can't do shit.

So I looked up some tips online and they show me how to optimize and shit but they always recommend doing that 999,999,999 cheat and I can't fucking do it. And anyway, what's the deal with having to cheat to keep building?

So what am I doing wrong?

It's not that hard, first of all take a look at techniques described here:
http://incise.org/advanced-sim-city-strategies.html

Also here is an example of city that reached the megalopolis status without using any advanced tricks.

I like the Windows 3.1 version better. I can't stand trying to play Sim City with a controller.

>> No.2217882

>>2217861
Oddly enough, I always liked it better with a controller (played Simcity on the SNES, and Simcity 2k on Saturn).

It fits in well with the slow pace of the game. You don't have to macro 15 different units around the map - you have to relax, get comfy, and build up your city slowly.

On the PC versions I always just built up everything as fast as I could, then let it fast forward until I had enough money to continue building. I grew tiresome too fast. On the console versions, I let the machine keep going non-stop without turning it off for weeks, because the game couldn't fast-forward at such a high speed.

There was also a really laggy port of SimCity 2000. the original SNES one was a decent adaptation, but trains were overpowered. You could have zero traffic and car pollution by building nothing but train tracks.
Obviously it was dumbed down for less powerful hardware, but the music was really good and the graphics had certain charm to them.

I love this game until I get a little into City mode, where it becomes obvious that there is a "right" way to play this, that the only way to get any further is to use metagame knowledge and techniques to build a super-efficient city.

Want roads? Nah, fuck you, rail everywhere.
You better be placing police stations every 3 buildings, too.

I want to build a city to get away from minmaxing faggotry of other genres I enjoy.

It's at this place I feel like the game is really linear and actually a bit shit. If I take my time getting to this stage though, I can have a really nice time.

This, the game mechanics are actually very broken thats why you cant build a conventional city and expect it to work.

If my video games had odometers SNES version of Sim City would probably have the most "miles" on it. I don't know why but I fucking love this game even if Sim City 2000 and games like Caesar III and Zeus are technically superior games.

>>2219097
I really know what you mean, Sim City really gets somewhat boring if you only care about playing it the "right" way but I have a solution for you: Do some sort of self-imposed challenge.
For example try how many citizens you can get without building a single police station or any rail roads. Or simply build a city the way you want it to be. You are aware that you can play game this game for fun since you aren't punished for not having a perfectly micromanaged super efficient city like you are in Caesar III or Zeus?

I basically lost interest in old JRPGs I used to love myself because I got too into trying to play them the "right" way going for a "perfect" game every time but then I discovered doing low level games and straight character challenges and learned to enjoy them again. I have found that self-imposed challenges also work for other games that you are too familiar with and have lost interest due to caring about the "right" way to play them or having a "must win" mindset.

It's on par with the Win95 version of SC2000 imo.

SNES SC, Win95 SC2000 and SC4 are the holy trinity of Sim City games

I really hate the way the strip builds look. I always go with the donut-build personally. I realize I'm wasting space, but to me half the appeal of running your city is getting an aesthetically pleasing look.

Better than PC Sim City. However, PC SimCity 2000 is GOAT.
