>Bought a sealed copy of Illusion of Gaia from some guy ages ago before this retro craze for about 40 bucks.
>Box always had a nice weight to it, assume everything is untouched and pristine
>Today, little nephew is dumped on me while aunt and uncle are visiting.
>Has to be entertained, so they send him to my game room
>Set him up with a gamecube game and let him do his thing, go back out to mingle
>He comes out to me holding pic related
>Anon, whats this?
>Explain its an icepack, and ask him where he got it
>"In that game box on the shelf"
>Run back to see he tore my illusion of gaia box open, not even opened, TORE open along the front
>Almost ready to scream at him but realize theres no game
>Theres also an el polo loco menu inside the box
>This entire time I've had a fucking icepack on my shelf.

I don't know whether to be mad, or relieved. but it got me thinking, How do you as collectors even know your collections are legit?

How do you know someone didn't just fill it with rocks and re-seal it?

I don't know about games, but over in /co/ we have hermetic sealing from companies like CGC (certified guaranty company). They seal it in hard, 100% UV resistant, air sealed hard plastic with a unique ID number on the front. If you want to see if it's bonafide you go to the site and type in the ID number. If something comes up you read it and make sure it's real, if nothing comes up it's fake.

Sure this may be little extreme for most people seeing as a nes game isn't worth thousands of dollars. Well aside from the Nintendo World Championship games anyway.
