What are some great underrated GB/GBC games, /vr/? I only know basic popular titles like pokémon and Mario.

I don't know if it's considered "good" but I recall Sims (the Urbz one I think) being surprisingly good. It had a storyline and less emphasis on the sandbox theme of the main series.

Super Mario Land isn't that bad at all. Even the tiny sprites are actually nice, especially since you can't see anything in front of you in SML2.

The bubble bobble (not puzzle bobble, I've never been able to get into that. I'm more of the magical drop crowd) port is surprisingly good and full-featured. Don't think it does any multiplayer though which is one of the nicest things about that game in other versions.

What are you saying? Ghost Babel is a great metal gear game on the GameBoy, plays a lot like Metal Gear 2 for MSX, including the ability to lean on walls.

>>2195342 don't you listen to him, in fact, avoid giving attention to anyone that only describes a game as "shit" without giving any real critic. I understand if he didn't enjoy the game but that doesn't apply to everyone, even more with a game most people praise it to be quite a surprise. Those who never played tend to see it as oddly port of the PS1 game (since the western release was titled as Metal Gear Solid, the Ghost Babel part is a japanese title), but they are mistaken, it's not related to the PS1 game at all. It just gives a different continuation to the first game of the series: Metal Gear for the MSX.

You don't have to play the PS1 game, but if you want some sense of continuity and a surprise, you could consider playing the first game on a MSX emulator. Still, Ghost Babel on its own is a neat play, try it out. The only part that was annoying is where you have to keep changing the color of your box to reach the correct conveyor belt, but nothing that some patience or a walkthrough won't do.

This one actually has a full fan work, but it's playable without it.

There's the very first Super Robot Wars, but it does have a fan translation. If you've played one you've played them all.

Cave Noire's in the same boat, but it's very simple without a patch. You might need a little bit of a look into what does which thing (and even then it just takes a little trial and error), but it's very simple after that.

I imagine it has something to do with not pissing off international Nintendo branches and foreign distributors. Given that time gaps between releases isn't common, they don't want people in territory B ordering the earlier release from territory A, thereby undercutting sales from Territory B Nintendo branch/larger distributors/retailers/etc in territory B. Maybe it also has something to do with copyright law? I know some arcade games were hardcore with the warnings, talking about legal issues if you were playing outside of the proper territory.

One reason is the same reason why Anime releases always get way delayed or with worse audio when they come out of Japan: More money is made from Japanese people buying Japan things, and if released too early/in the same quality Japan itself will import it's own products. Odd isn't it?

I would suspect regional pricing being a thing with games plays a part as well.

If you like Monster Max, also try Altered Space, Looney Tunes: Twouble, and The Adventures of Pinocchio. Don't bother trying to find a physical copy of the latter, though. I've had my eye out for over a decade now, but don't expect I'll ever have the luck. I doubt it really exists, only in 100-in-1 carts and rom sets.

If you like those kind of games, Solstice on the NES and Equinox on the SNES is from the creators of Altered Space, and in addition to Monster Max, Rare pretty much invented the isometric platformer with ZX Spectrum classics like Knight Lore, Alien 8, and Pentagram, as well as the fantastic Snake Rattle n' Roll on the NES. It's also on the Genesis/Megadrive, but I don't much care for that version.

Head over Heels has a modern freeware PC remake, and one popular take on the genre was the very first Batman game, made in 1986.

Hey, I dunno if you're still in here, anon, but I amcapable of recording almost any GBS soundtrack playing clearly on an original GB. In fact, I've already ripped several soundtracks for myself and they sound 300x better than any emulated method.

I can do some extended song requests for you if you drop me a line. My email is in the name field.
