Good retro games based on long-running anime?

I love One Piece and DBZ and I find it sort of trippy to go back and play old games based on the series that were already far into the story before people in the States even knew about it too well.

It blew my mind seeing Buu in DBZ Ultimate Battle 22 while the series was only at Frieza over here. But that game sucked anyway.

The One Piece Grand battle games were super fun, though.

When I first played Super Butoden 2 around 1995, on TV they were still airing Dragon Ball, Red Ribbon or Piccolo saga.
I didn't know who ANY of the characters were, and was confused that Goku can't be choosen (you can with a secret code, but I didn't knew that back then).

It was balling though, I loved playing the game and imagining what DBZ would be like. Some time later I started buying the manga and watching the movies on VHS, before they started airing DBZ in 1998.

Not exactly a long-running anime but the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game is pretty fun, and the recent anime is now into the part that the game took place in (Stardust Crusaders)

The game is fun, but I hate the fucking art style, both in the game and the cartoon

I think it's kinda trippy seeing something relatively modern like One Piece have a /vr/ game. Even trippier considering it's been running from 1997, I thought it was newer than that.

And both were developed by Natsume.

Same here. It's funny how some children(now adults)have nostalgic memories for the series in Japan around the same time I was playing the PS1 and N64. It's a trip seeing a coherent screenshot of the PS1 game.

For those in this thread, I highly recommend the Sailor Moon games. They're all insanely fun and the RPG even has a full translation.

There was a One Piece fighting game on the Wonderswan that went up to the fight with Crocodile, I think. It DID sort of eventually release over here, but as an adventure game for the GBA with Luffy as the only playable character. It also only covered the East Blue saga.

I would not recommend the Ranma ½ fighting game for ps1.

It plays like a really bland version of Tekken 2.

Yeah, that's one horrible game.

Not really anime but still, are there any decent games on the Kamen rider franchise? I've been playing through the climax heroes series and so far they all rock

Try the PlayStation games. Most of these games are from the early Heisei Rider series but there are also two Showa based games

Kuuga, Agito, and Ryuki for the PS1.

Agito was the best IMO of the three games.

The Slayers RPG was pretty good but I'm not sure if that counts as a long-running anime

If you can into Japanese (no translations out) I'd recommend the Saturn RPGs and the PS1 game too.

And it's pretty long-running-ish, it had two new seasons ~2007.

well it was originally a sort of loving satire of the genre so you'd have to expect it not to be terrible

they did make a continuation of the series in like, 2009

there is totally a manga though it doesn't nearly cover all the material

Not retro but I most definitely reccomend the Battride War games for PS3. First one is pretty rough gameplay-wise, but they polished and overhauled for the second. They really capture the feel of being a Kamen Rider and each character has their unique gimmick and you can simulate their fighting style pretty well.

They are musou-likes so hopefully you're into the genre. I'd think most of /vr/ would be though since musous are some of the only ongoing series that still feel "gamey".

Anyways, the only downside is no Showa riders. Maybe next game...

It had 3 26 episode series and a shit ton of movies and OVA plus a couple 13 episode series recently. It counts

You can try something from Compati Heroes series (crossover between Kamen Rider, Ultraman and Gundam), there are tons of games from sumo wrestling on Famicom to first person dungeon crawlers on 3DS.
