What does /vr/ think of Secret of Evermore?

One of my favorite games. Great soundtrack too.

I have the same issue, though I also found it frightfully boring. There were a few too many "Average kid gets sucked into magic portal and saves the world" based plots in games and movies in the 90s.

I like the box art, but the boss itself wasn't as fun as I expected it to be, I also didn't expect the monster to be the first boss you fight against in the game.

It was a great game though, and I spent a lot of fun hours playing it.

This one was really self aware of that though, it was a nice change up.

Also my favorite part of the game was running through the greek market like a madman to get all the rare items within the time limit. Be sure to have a guide and use the whirlpool outside for max spice and rice.

Obscure sidequests, grinding and boring map puzzles: the game.
I played it back in 1998-99 from a SNES ROM CD a friend gave me. The worst thing is that the ROM crashed just when you beat the robo-butler so I don´t know how it ends.
I tried to play it again on a PSP like 2 years ago, but after all the market shit from Antiqua, and the dog labyrinth from Gothica I just abandoned it of absolute boredom.

>>2207615
seconded. I could never get into SoE even though I like pretty much every other ARPG from that era.

The battle system is also pretty broken. You can cheese just about every boss battle by multi-casting magic

>> No.2211159

I really don't like Secret of Evermore or Secret of Mana. I find them to be kind of a chore to get through.

>The worst thing is that the ROM crashed just when you beat the robo-butler so I don´t know how it ends.

You know, it's funny you should mention that. I was playing the game back in 1996, or so, and got to the last boss. I was called away for about half an hour, and just left it on one of the menus during the battle. When I came back, some of the graphics on-screen were scrambled, and the colors were wrong. The game was totally frozen, but the music was still going. I dunno what happened, but I didn't bump the system or anything; I couldn't get it to happen again, either.

The ending of this game was turbo unsatisfactory. Every other factor of the game was enjoyable - particularly the soundtrack.

>> No.2216403

This game was easily one of my favorites next to Chrono Trigger.

I loved the story and characters a lot. My only complaint was how shit leveling weapons and alchemy was. I almost never used alchemy except for healing as a result.

>> No.2216450

Leveling up alchemy was a weird mechanic. When it comes to spells and weapons, you can imagine someone getting stronger through repeated use... But how do alchemy attacks get stronger by using them over again? Do you get better at mixing clay and a crystal after repeated doing it?

Plus some ingredients were so rare, expensive, or required at least 3 (or worse, were a combination of rare, expensive, 3 parts) that it was an absolute chore to level up.

Most alchemy you could cast 99, 49, or 33 times before running out.

>> No.2216548

I liked the game as a whole but parts were boring and like some have said above felt like a chore to get through. The game needed larger areas with more monster varieties, and it seemed like I beat the game without using alchemy until the end boss where you pretty much have to.

>> No.2216575

>>2216403
Alchemy is OP, especially the later spells. Game becomes cake walk after you get the Barrier spell. You don't even need to level it up to take advantage of it.

>> No.2216736

>>2216575
You have no idea how much I hated the leveling system.

I literally leveled up the horn spear (the very first spear you get) to lvl 3 and never used anything else again until I got the bazooka.

And all I used for alchemy was the very first heal spell until I got that super OP double heal spell.

It's pretty good. A lot of people shit on it because it wasn't SoM2 or SD3, but I thought it was pretty cool.

>> No.2218790

I hated it. It was fairly linear and didn't really have anything else except go to the next area/town/region and beat the bad guy there. Alchemy was broken... as long as you had enough ingredients to make it work that is. So either you spend a lot of time beating bosses with weapons or the same amount of time grinding to find ingredients. It felt a lot like being stuck in the prehistoric era in Chrono Trigger finding flowers, horns, etc.

Even if you didn't level your spells, some of them are initially broken in different ways. The startup animation for the Lance spell actually overrides many boss spells. Even though it isn't powerful, it completely overrides enemy magic and thus you can avoid taking damage at all. Ultimately, I feel like with issues like these, the game was a good idea but not very well put together.

>> No.2219639

It's always a fun game to play. Great atmosphere and music with an entertaining script. The game is pretty easy though, and it's way too short with little to do minus forward the game's plot. I never thought about it before till this thread but I'll have to say that the ending is rather unfulfilling as well.

Still, it's a fun game. To think that the only reason I own it is because my aunt mixed it up with Secret of Mana. I don't think I would have played it otherwise.

>> No.2220434

>>2214475
Depends on which part of the ending.

I found the post-fight credits quite nice.

The actual final bossfight is bullshit.

Either you use your (Two legit, two cheating) route to invulnerability and buff yourself up for instant-charge attacks, or you lose. No middleground. No tactics. Either you stomp or the robot stomps.

Oh. Well. I forgot. There's also a spot on the rows above the robot (Where the screens used to be. Somewhere on the left half thereof) where you can climb up and then just bazooka the robot until it dies, while it's impossible for you to get hit.

I feel as if the entire game was a project for Square. They wanted to avoid having to do localization, so they handed over the underlying skeleton of Secret of Mana to their North American branch in hopes that they could develop something best suited for Western audiences. Apparently, some details in the gameplay were overlooked... typically for the worse.

Well, it wasn't.

Personally, I'd say that SoE was... Innovative. But with innovation come rough edges.

I enjoy the storyline a great deal more than the usual 'Safe the world' fare - but there have clearly been massive cuts, antagonists appear only to disappear again without resolution, the thread that's supposed to hold it together is... Half gone.

No issues with the graphics and soundtrack, they're great.

The dog's OP as soon as it can pull off a max charge. Kind of balanced by the dog's slow speed, but still. On the other hand, its AI is vastly superior to anything else the SNES had to offer at the time.

I love the alchemy system, and the weapons system is vastly improved to SoM - all weapons are usable, and you can actually go the weapons- instead of alchemy route without issues. That you'll run out of oil and thus likely out of your first-playthrough standard attack formula when in Gotica is IMO a good thing - forces the player to improvise. Where's the adventure when you just get stuff thrown at you?

The dungeons however, tend to be pretty meh, and in some cases, are blatant torture.

It's not a BAD game. But at the same time, some aspects make it clear that the devs were indeed working on their first game - unpolished at times, inexperienced with some aspects of game (Specifically, dungeon) design.

But then again. For it being their first and only game, it was actually one hell of a result.

Agreed.

I lost interest early in the game and never got back to it.

This is one of the games over which me and my little brother constantly disagree. He loves it, and I just couldn't care less either way. I did have fun watching him play once though when we hung out a long time ago.

It's a flawed gem. The gameplay and systems are very good but it's got a sort of tone that not a lot of video games hit.

I had the real cart glitch a couple times... The 'Mozquito' sting that you can accidentally hit in the castle seems like it triggers a lot of shit.

>Cool note, the guy who did the soundtrack went on to be one of the revered in the industry.

Yeah, and Jeremy Soule was 19 years old when he did the soundtrack for SoE. Amazing.

>>2223497
Yeah I had a lot of glitches happen to me on my cart. The best one was where you find the Call Bead behind a statue in Nobilia, it glitches, and it just gives out infinite Call Beads.

There are a lot of unfun ones like getting stuck in the pyramid, getting duplicate parts to the flying machine (messing up the spawn of the other part), Rat King's crates not blowing up after you kill it (blocking the door)...

>> No.2224161

Would've been better if it had Yo-Yos, the main character was named Mike, and set in the tropics.

But seriously, I could never get into it. After Secret of Mana with it's great co-op and party aspect the gameplay was just too basic, and the dog's abilities was a watered down rehash of Boy and His Blob, basically.

Also later on down the line, I began to wonder if the branching out to produce this in the States impeded porting projects to the NA markets of other Square games (especially Seiken Densetsu 3). So the idea of that (potentially) occuring made me generally dislike the game moreso, although that is admittedly unfair sentiment.

That's not a glitch, it's intentional.

I'm sorry to tell you that you simply suck at the game if you think you needed anything OP for the final boss fight.

I fought him with the bazooka and lvl 3 horn spear and the only alchemy I used was one up and that double heal spell.

I never leveled up anything else because I thought it was too tedious even as a kid.
